Chapter Two

Hours, maybe even days, later I woke up hugging myself. Not by choice, mind you. The had me restrained in a straitjacket. I hate these things. I wanted to rub my eyes, like most people do when they wake up. But I didn’t have that ability at this moment.

’Got Yourself in a pickle there Tom?’

I heard the snide remark made by Bert, but I was choosing to ignore him today. If I could. I pushed myself up from the bed, as best I could without the use of my arms and hands. I walked over to the door and looked out the small window. A male nurse was stationed outside my door.

”HEY!” I yelled through the glass.

He looked at me. He set his newspaper aside and came over to the door, a small smile playing on his lips.

”Well good evening, Mr. Grant. How ya feeling?” he asked.

I couldn’t decide at this point if he was mocking me, or just being friendly. Bert thought he knew, he thinks he knows everything.’He’’He’s mocking you.’ Bert says.

I continue to ignore him, which is pissing him off. But I don’t care at this point. I answer the nurses question.

”Better. Except my arms are cramping, and I have to pee.

The nurse kinda chuckled. “All right, just a moment, and I will help ya outta that thing.” He said.

I heard the clinking of keys, which was soon replaced by the sound of the key being slid into the door lock, and then click! The door opened a moment later.

”Now if I take you out of that jacket, promise me you wont go ballistic on me.” He said.

”I promise I wont. I really have to pee!” I say.

He begins to undo the buckles on the jacket, slowly and carefully. All the while Bert, tired of being ignored, tried to get some sort of reaction out of me.

’Tom, don’t ignore me! You’re hurting my feelings! C’mon Tom, we’re buddies! TOM!’

I jumped when he yelled my name. The nurse looked at me skeptically.

”You okay Tom?” he asked.

I nodded. “Yeah. I just really have to pee.” I lied.

He went about undoing the last buckle. By this time, Bert was circling us. He looked angry, and mean. That kinda scared me. When he was this way, he would make me do what he wanted. But I was gonna fight this time.

The jacket was pulled off, pulling me from my thoughts on Bert. I stretched my arms, and shook them out. Enjoying the freedom they now had. I smiled.

”Thanks!” I said appreciatively.

”Your welcome. If you behave we wont put you back in the jacket. My nas Jos Jon. I am your night shift nurse. If you need anything, just let me know. I’ll be just outside your door.” Jon said.

I nodded. “How about some dinner, AFTER I pee.” I siad.

He nodded. “I’ll have it brought up.” Jon replied.

I nodded, and without another word walked into the little bathroom that was provided in my room. I took care of my business: peed, brushed my teeth, combed my hair, and washed up. When I came out of the bathroom, Jon was waiting for me.

”Would you like to eat in the cafeteria, or here in your room?” he asked me.

”Cafeteria!” I said.

’Here!’ Bert said.

”Cafeteria it is!” Jon said with a smile.

Since he couldn\'t hear Bert, his opinion didn\'t matter. When Jon left the room to relay the message over the staff phone, I turned to Bert, and whispered.

”Shut up! Not one word, and STAY here!”

Bert glared at me. ‘Fine! But we WILL talk later!’ he said.

”You ready to go Tom?” Jon asked.

”Yeah! Is everyone else gonna eat with me?” I asked.

”Nope, not tonight. They’ve already eaten dinner tonight. It’ll be just you and me!” Jon said.

I nodded, remaining silent for a moment. “Well that’s alright. I don’t think the other crazies like me anyway.” I said.

”Why do you say that?” Jon asked, as we entered the cafeteria.

”They look at me funny, even laugh at me. Dr. Weis hates me.” I said.

”The ‘crazies’, as you put it, look at everyone funny, including themselves. They snicker at the nurses, doctors, each other, and themselves. As for Dr. Weis, he doesn\'t hate you either. He’s on vacation for awhile. His wife just had a baby.” Jon explains.

”Oh… well I’m happy for them.” I say. I fell silent for a moment, “Jon… Can I tell you something?” I ask.

”Sure.” Jon answered.

Our food was brought out to us, along with plastic silverware. They don’t let us use real silverware, figure we might hurt ourselves with it.

”Can you keep a secret?” I ask…
