Chapter 2- His Prisoner
Derek stopped abruptly in his tracks, making sure that the woman didn’t see him, before hiding behind a brush of over grown weeds. He kneeled down on the dirt, keeping his head low, so she wouldn’t suspect anyone watching her. Derek placed one of his hands on the ground to better study himself, but a twig snapped beneath his hand. Derek ducked his head quickly to the ground, not moving his hand on the twig. He was sure that he heard him, but he didn’t think she would be wise enough to look for her attacker.
Anna set down Twister’s reins and turned around to look in the direction of Derek’s hiding spot. She went very still, holding her breath, listening intently for any sudden noises. After pausing for some odd minutes, Anna cautiously put her canteen back into her sack, while still staring at the brush.
Derek remained silent, until he heard Anna release the breath she held been holding, as she straddled herself on Twister, and began riding away from Derek. Only did Derek stand up, brushing the dirt off of his trousers and hands, when he was certain she had disappeared. That was close, thought Derek. Indeed, she jumped at any peculiar sounds, whether it be a squirrel in the trees, or a deer in the woods, but Derek couldn’t blame her; she had to follow her instincts if she wanted to live.
Derek headed back to camp, quickening his strides. He hadn’t thought about telling the other men that he had found her. He had a mighty good idea about what they would to her and none of it would be in the least bit pleasant for the woman. No, instead, Derek slipped back to camp and rode his horse back to the spot he saw her hopefully unnoticed. He continued to ride in the direction Anna traveled in all through the early hours of the night searching for her. She couldn’t have gone too far. Her horse from what he could tell was in poor condition, and the woman seemed ill herself. There was silence besides the sound of his horse’s hoof beats trampling the dirt.
Derek’s eyes began to burn after peering through the darkness surrounding the trees, searching for a woman on a horse, but he began to wonder. Maybe he had gone about this in the wrong way. She could be resting, sitting on a log or stone, or may even be sleeping. Derek now began searching the ground inside the woods, rather than taking the main roads. Now that he realized it, a person running for her life wouldn’t take the main roads, for she could be spotted easily.
Anna hovered against a tree trunk, drawing her legs up to her chest, arms hugging her knees, hoping to secure her body heat, as cool breezes continuously swept over her. Anna refused to fall asleep, for fear that she might be found. She didn’t want her fate to be similar to that of her mother and fathers. As the night passed on, Anna struggled to keep her eyes open. Every so often, her eyes would close briefly, before Anna would snapped them open, panicking that she was captured. Anna continued this routine on and on, before her exhaustion got the best of her and she drifted off into a deep sleep.
Meanwhile, Derek began to k thk that he was going around in circles, since everything surrounding him strangely looked familiar. Derek’s horse grew restless, demanding a bit of rest. Derek growled and stepped off of the saddle and tied the horse tightly to a tree. Almost immediately did the horse collapsed onto the ground. Derek began walking by foot this time, pulling back the branches and leaves away from his face as he did so. It wasn’t long before Derek finally spotted a body lying on the ground. He was lucky he had even seen her; he had almost passed her. Yes, she was asleep, but it didn’t appear to be a very peacefueep.eep. Her hands at times shook and her eyes seemed to squint.
Derek approached carefully by her side, looking down at her face. He didn’t know what to do with her and everyone must wonder where he had gone off to by now. Without thinking, Derek scooped up the sleeping woman into his muscled arms, making sure not to wake her. She would probably react like a mad woman and Derek didn’t have any rope to tie her with on him. He would have to keep her somewhere safe he thought, as he glanced around. If he had found her, this was not a safe place to stay.
Once again, Derek found himself on his horse, looking for a safe place to spend the night, but his time he had the presence of a beautiful woman in front of him. He kept a firm grip on her waist, so she wouldn’t fall. She was limp in his arms, her head resting on his broad shoulder. Now, up close, Derek could see her whole profile. She had the most gorgeous long, brown, silky hair that ended a little past her shoulders. She had high, rosy cheekbones, and below it was her full mouth. Although Derek couldn’t see her eyes, he pictured them to be dark, much like her hair.
After Derek was satisfied with the secluded cave he was lucky enough to stumble upon, he set Anna on the ground. He walked back to his horse and took out a chain of ropes. He made sure that all his weapons were out of reach before gently grabbing both her feet and binding them to his. He tightly tied the knot, making certain that it would be impossible to untie, keeping in mind the pocketknife below his belt. He then tied both of her wrists together, but less tight this time. Although it was rather uncomfortable for the he both of them, she couldn’t be escaping again now could she?
Derek settled his back against the cool cave wall, while bringing Anna gently across his lap. Already, he could feel the heat flowing between them and Derek let out a long sigh.
“Bloody cold,” grumbled Derek, before falling into a light sleep. He would figure out what to do with her in the morning.
