Chapter 2
Nathan
opened the door to his house. Three
pairs of eyes darted towards him, concerned looks pasted over their faces.style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">
“Nathan!
What did you do to yourself?” Annalise,
a slight girl in her mid-twenties rush to Nathan’s side.style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> Curls of blond hair dangled freely, covering
parts of her oval face. Using one hand
to support Nathan and another to take off his jacket, Annalise led him to the
couch. “You are going to need stitches
for this one,” she mumbled disapprovingly.
\">
“Nathan, I
takethatthat the monster ended up in a worst condition?” A questioning look
came from Miles, a computer geek who loves nothing more than hacking into high
security systems. Pushing his thick
glasses up, and with a messy brown, mushroom haircut, he really did look like a
geek. Miles took care of information
and the high tech equipment, not to mention their never-ending supply of
money. It was hard to hack into a
bank’s security and change the amount of money in their account, but to Miles,
that’s just a minor challenge he couldn’t resist.yes\">
“Much
worst.” Nathan removed his shirt so
Annalise could see how bad the injury was.
“So what’s the damage?”
“Damn, you
lost a lot of blood. Any more of this
and the hospital will notice all the donated blood missing.style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> You’ve got to be more careful, I mean, if
not for yourself, then at least for the team.
If you’re dead, the team is dead, don’t you get it?” A blond haired boy,
sitting directly across Nathan, spoke up, eyes wide at the blood-soaked
sleeve. Jace was a medical assistant at
the local hospital. Everyone would call
him a nurse, but Jace hated that name.
“You think
I try to get myself hurt? If I wasn’t careful, Jace, I’d probably be dead.style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> I don’t see you doing all the dirty work.”
Nathan winced as Annalise dabbed at his wound.
“Hey, just
worried about you, that’s all. I am
allowed to worry, aren’t I?” Jace got
up and walked away. “I’ll be back with the needles and stuff.style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> Try not to bleed yourself to death while I’m
gone, Nathan.”
“You two
should really get along better. I don’t
know what went on in your past, but every time you see each other, you’re
bickering like little kids.” Miles took
away Nathan’s bloodstained clothes and came back with fresh bandages.style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> All he got in reply from Nathan was a set
frown.
“Nathan,
I’m not trying to question your motives, but… why did you not try to stop the
bleeding? It seemed like you let it
bleed on purpose.” Annalise took a damp
cloth from Miles and started to clean off the bloody arm.style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> The blond girl tried not to let it show on
her face, but she was really worried about Nathan.yes\"> Every time the boy came back, his injuries got worst.style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> And Nathan was really a boy; he was the
youngest in their team. All three of
them were at least over twenty, but Nathan refused to tell them his age,
stating that he was old enough to do what he was doing and leave to him
alone. They all knew that he wasn’t
older than twenty-one because he asked Miles to make a fake ID for him to get
into 21+ clubs.
“There wasn’t
much I could’ve done, Ann.”
“So tell me
what happened. This vampire must be
strong to get you in this bad of a shape.”
Annalise asked.
“Nothing
much… Just that this one was strong, and fast.
I was lucky that my knife hit him right in the heart, or else you won’t
be seeing me tonight.”
“How can
you speak so casually? You might not think much of your life, but other people
do.” Jace stood in the doorway,
supplies in hand. “Don’t you think of
others for once, Nathan?” The blond
dropped the supplies into Mile’s arms and stormed out of the room.style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">
“If I
didn’t know better, I’d thought you two were lovers, haha.”style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> Miles laughed.
“Nathan,
the cut on your face is still bleeding. What did you get scratched with
anyways? It should’ve stopped bleeding
a long time ago.” Annalise wiped the blood away from Nathan’s face.style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">
A shiver
ran down Nathan’s back as he remembered the vampire licking the small
wound. ‘His saliva must’ve kept the
bleeding going.’ Nathan shrugged,
indicating he didn’t know, or was unwilling to tell.yes\"> “Just hurry with the stitching already. I’m tired, I want to
catch some sleep soon.”
“You know,
people your age go clubbing and drinking and just generally try to have fun.
You just want to get yourself into an early grave.” Annalise stringed the
needle and began to work. “Prepare
yourself, this is gonna hurt.”
“When does
it not?” Nathan gritted his teeth as
the first needle sunk in. It hurted
like a bitch.
“Annalise!
That’s a great idea. Going clubbing, I mean.
We haven’t gone in such a long time, and I think we all need a break
from all the serious stuff.” Miles typed in something on his computer and
grinned like an idiot.
“You’re
right. We do need a break.” Annalise
glanced at Nathan to see his reaction.
“You two
go, I’ll stay here. Besides, I’m
injured.” Nathan didn’t want to
go. Clubbing reminded him of bad
memories.
“Oh, no you
don’t. You and Jace have to go.style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> I’m forcing you to. Or else, I’m not cooking
anymore, and we all know what a bad cook you are.”yes\"> Annalise heard Miles snickered at the last comment.style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> Last time Nathan cooked, the food was
literally poisoned with the awful taste.
He burned soup too. Annalise
didn’t know how he’d managed to do that, but Nathan was full of surprises, and
not all of them were good.
Nathan
glared. He knew that without Annalise
cooking, they would all starve. “Fine,
but it better be a nice place.”
“Don’t
worry about that. A new place just
opened on the other side of town. I
heard it’s one of the most popular clubs already, and it’s only been opened for
a month. The guest list is so booked
that normal people wouldn’t be able to get in until the next month, but we
aren’t normal people.” A few clicks from Miles and a satisfied smile spread
across his face. “We’re going this
Friday! I am the best!”
A sharp
gasp escaped Nathan’s lips as a needle plunged through his skin, and another,
and another. ‘Shit. This is the part I
hate.’
A warm
breeze caressed his body. Standing out on
the balcony, Kallias leaned on the railing.
The vampire was deep in thought tonight. yes\"> He could not dismiss from his mind a pair of clear emerald
eyes. The fierceness and fire that
burned within those hateful eyes haunted him mercilessly.style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> To say that they were captivating was an
understatement. Kallias shook his head,
trying to rid himself of the hunter.
“Master
Kallias, you have summoned me?” A dark
figure, clouded in darkness, edged his way towards the balcony.style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> It was Jeannot, Kallias’s second in
command.
“Yes, I have.style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> It seems that we have a slight problem.”style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> Kallias turned to face his subordinate.style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> A grim frown replaced the thoughtful look on
his face. “I am sure you have felt the
passing of our dear friend and comrade, Nikon, tonight.”
“I have
felt it. A tragedy, really. I would’ve
thought he’d at least last a few more nights in this town, but I was
mistaken. It’s ironic though, how his
name meant victory, and yet he fell.”
Jeannot said with feigned sorrow.
“As you
already know, our numbers are not increasing as much as we would’ve liked. style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> Some of these humans are proving to be
rather, difficult to deal with. I think
we should start recruiting again, in mass numbers.”yes\"> Kallias knew that Jeannot already had something in mind, since
the other vampire had been itching for him to issue this command.style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">
Jeannot’s
eyes brightened at the words. “You don’t
know how long I have waited for you to say that, Kallias.style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> And, you have chosen the perfect timing, as
always. A new club has opened north of
us. It’s very popular, and crowded, lot’s
of young souls and bodies to be devoured.
It opens two days from now.”
“I trust
you will find a way for us to enter?”
Kallias walked inside his room and sat down on a redwood chair.style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">
“Of
course. All will be taken care of.”style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> Jeannot bowed to the seated vampire.style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">
“And one
more thing. Assign Xanthe to Nikon’s
position.”
“It will be
done. Anything else?”style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">
lasslass=MsoNormal> “No. You
are dismissed.”
style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">
