Chapter Two

Torish loved watching Jael. From where he sat by the door, on a stool, one foot hooked around a run, taking entrance fees, stamping people\'s hands with rubber and ink, he could watch his mate acting the part of some long gone DJ. Rainbow arm covers, white tee-shirt, beads called candy, big black headphones, to Torish he just looked like Jael, painfully cute, and there were those baggy black pants, white strips up the side that made Torish\'s feathers stand up just to think of the way they lay just right over the body underneath.

\"You\'re glowing again. You always glow on rave night,\" Nikra said, coming up behind Torish, his voice blurry with an accent that Jael had told Torish was Russian, or had been at one time. \"Like one big angelic glow stick.\"

\"It\'s not that bad,\" Torish said, then scratched his head, trying to take a look at his wings, to see if they were glowing that brightly. \"Besides, Jael tells me that glow sticks were like all the thing.\"

\"Yeah, like,\" Nikra said. Nikra smiled at one of the guests, who smiled back like a fan girl. Torish could just about see the stars floating over her head. Dark hair, lavender eyes, pale skin, high cheekbones, Nikra was a little too mysterious, too dangerous feeling for Torish\'s tastes, but the ship\'s owner did have his following. \"Meeting before opening tomorrow, to discuss some location plans.\"

\"Okay,\" Torish said, not really having much of an idea with Nikra meant by his words. Rave night always felt a little unreal to Torish anyway, too many lights and colors and his wings glowed in the black light if he\'d gotten a good wake up from Jael or not. \"Tomorrow.\"

And with that he stamped another hand. There had to be two or three hundred people in the club already and he wondered if everyone without a small child to watch was there tonight or what.

The primary income for the Lost Stars didn\'t happen at the door to the over crowded dance floor. It happened below that, in a small sound lab run by a guy named Zeke, with forest green hair and ears that were a bit pointy that could pick out the faintest warble of stray radio signal in the haze that was normal space noise.

Zeke sat in a huge comfortable chair surrounded plants, sunlamps, a constant ninety percent gravity, and his beloved sounds. Zeke\'s ears were why they were at Gattling Town anyway, because he hadn\'t stopped picking up sounds, hadn\'t stopped mining the space in that area of echoes from the past. Dark blue eyes were just slits as he sat there, head phones covering both ears, blotting out any other sounds. The first click opened his eyes. Blinking he listened for the next. As soon as he heard that, he grabbed his keyboard, summoned up a visional display, anaylized the vibration patterns making the sounds. \"Oh blooming h's s's sprites! OH kiss the frog good night!\"

Plants, his chair, his own pants tangled around him and he ended up on his hands and knees before he got to the ladder that would take him up out of his listening pod. Nikra wouldn\'t be wearing a headset, this he knew, so he had to find him and tell him in person. There were ships coming. Big ones, at least two, with jump drives. That meant, Union or Money, and neither one of them were particularly good for Gattling or the Lost Stars.
