Quinn watched as Adrian’s hung limply in the other creature’s hand. Avi bit his wrist and allowed the blood to flow into Adrian’s mouth. When Adrian tried to latch onto his wrist, he was tossed back onto the bed.
Adrian shakily got to his knees, crawling towards his master arms out stretched. “Ma…Master.”
“You dare bring that thing into my home? I want you and that filth gone.”
“Master…” Adrian started.
“If you have not left by the time I return I will destroy you and your childe.”
“Master…please…” Adrian pleaded his eyes filling with tears as the being turned and left and Adrian burst into sobs. Quinn came out of his corner and put his hand on Adrian’s shoulder. After a few minutes the tears stopped and Adrian looked over at Quinn puffy eyed and depressed.
He sighed climbing out of the bed, and swaying slightly. Quinn steadied him and followed him like his shadow, He helped Adrian into his clothes and watched as the boy took a small satchel and shoved a few more shirts and pants into it. He looked at Quinn, seemingly noticing his nudity for the first time.
“In that chest,” he said shakily pointing, “master’s mortal clothes.”
Quinn dressed swiftly and packed a satchel similar to that of Adrian’s. He watched as Adrian slowly opened a chest. He took out a handful of black velvet pouches and tossed them at Quinn and taking another handful stuffed it into his own bag.
Quinn opened on of the pouches and saw that it was filled with pearls. He quickly shoved them into the bottom of the satchel and glanced up at Adrian. The preparation had taken its toll on the weakened vampire. He swayed as he lifted his own satchel something that was only slightly larger than his head.
Quinn on the other hand felt wonderful, he grabbed a few more pouched pud put those in the inner pocket of his jacket. He watched distraught as Adrian tried to make his way to the cave entrance and fell to his knees.
He turned to Quinn, “run…” he rasped.
“This seems to be my fault little one, I would not leave you behind,” he said and swept Adrian into his arms, surprised at how light he was. “Which way?”
“Ships…he will not go to England,” Adrian said and pointed through the trees,
“Do you speak English?”
“No but we will learn quickly enough. Now run.”
Quinn did not have to be told twice and fled for the docks. Avi dived out of the trees the second they had departed. The ancient creature sighed, he hadn’t been alone in 600 years, but beings more powerful than him had set everything into motion. Two hundred years was not that long but it was about time he came out of the caves again.
Nearly mirroring Adrian’s movements from hours ago; he gathered a satchel of clothes and jewels and once he exited the cave sealed the entrance with some surrounding boulders. He had so many of these caves. He placed his seal on the cave and knew no one but the most foolish of humans would try to enter. Most would have an instinctual fear of the cave.
He sat for a moment thinking on what his appearance should be for the next few decades. His hair darkened, color was added to the whites of his eyes, and he changed out of his white shift, into breeches, a shirt and boots, followed by an over coat.
Once done he had shoulder length brown hair, green eyes and tanned skin.
“Italy,” he said suddenly, remembering the cave only accessible through a deep swim. It would have to suffice until he decided whether he truly wanted to return to life without Adrian.
Adrian and Quinn reached the shore and saw that there were two boats preparing to depart. Quinn looked down at Adrian but he had passed out again, He picked a boat at random and hoped the people would never notice them.
Oddly enough they didn’t and he caught bits and piece’s of a language he recognized as English. He sighed and hoped he was on the right boat. He moved down to the lowest level of the ship. He settled down behind some large crates.
An overwhelming tiredness assaulted him and curled up with Adrian in his arms and fell into a deep sleep. When Quinn woke next it was twilight. He looked at Adrian and blanched. Adrian was shivering and dark circles had formed under his eyes. His breathing was short gasps and Quinn feared he was near death.
A rat scurried past his foot and with inhuman speed he grabbed it bringing the scurrying creature close to his face as he was assaulted by a scent he couldn’t recognize. The scent was strangely alluring, giving him an urge to devour the strange little creature.
With barely a thought he bit into the rat’s neck and drank its blood in two droughts. He quickly wanted more and looked around for more rats. One disgustingly large one approached and he grabbed it with both hands, causing Adrian to slump forward. He looked at the rat and back at Adrian.
Without a second thought he ripped open the rats throat and held it over, Adrian’s mouth, The tiny mouth opened and drained the rat but he remained in the same ghastly condition. Quinn quickly decided on a different course of action.
He knew what his next actions had to be, and carefully bit into his wrist already seeing what excessive blood loss could do him first hand. He bit into his own wrist and held it over Adrian’s mouth; pulling away when the vampire reached for the limb. He felt a little light headed but no where near as weak as Adrian.
He watched as the vampire’s eyes fluttered then opened, and rolled about unseeingly. “Master,” he rasped, “Master, it burns please…”
“Little one look at me,” Quinn said.
Adrian tilted his head to the side and looked at Quinn. His eyes filled with tears as he remembered everything.
“No more of that, we need to get you well. How do we do that?”
“Ma…master’s blood,” Adrian said sadly.
“Then how are you made?”
“Too sm…small…three nights.”
Quinn ran the words around his head for a few minutes. It is normally done over three nights? And you are too small to properly do it?”
“Yes…”
“So you were going to kill me?”
“No…kill…no…need.”
“So you don’t kill? Will I? I’ve already killed the rats.”
“No…need…with…bigger.”
Quinn grabbed another rat and fed it to Adrian who made a face. “Is something wrong?”
“Humans…taste better.”
“Well we have a boat full of them, I fell asleep a little while ago. We should be e soe soon.”
“Fledgling…sleep until darkness. No…England.”
“Then where?” Quinn whispered attracting another rat this one for himself. Adrian shut his eyes and his brow furrowed in concentration.
“America…steam…20 days.”
“America?! I don’t want to go to America!” Adrian didn’t respond as a numbness took his body, he clutched Quinn’s shirt like a life line and shut his eyes. He had never left Europe either and he was afraid of America. Were there more like him and Quinn? And what if they arrived during the day?
Quinn would not be awake and he would be in no state to get them away from prying eyes. He sighed and looked up at Quinn. He was too young to not properly eat. He didn’t want to think about what would had happened if this had happened when he was younger. He would have most likely died.
For now he needed Quinn to survive. “Tired…eat…”
“You want more? I can go look for some…”
“No…you eat…I tired…” Adrian said the rats blood not enough to sustain him for long periods. Quinn nodded and arranged their satchels as pillows and carefully lay Adrian down. Almost as an afterthought he placed his jacket over Adrian as a makeshift blanket.
