Secrets Among Friends

Chapter Two: Secrets among friends

Rorie lead the way down a long corridor. She stopped at the farthest room at the end of the hall. The huge wooden door was covered with drawings of flames and had the name Rorie burned into the wood. She withdrew her wand from her standard school uniform and hesitantly whispered “earth, water, fire, sky.” The large door slowly opened and she led the three new girls into her own chambers. Rorie had been here longer than any other student. She had always had her own chambers and was not happy about having to share it. Much less with three other people! She almost tripped over the piles of luggage that were strewn about just inside the door. “The sisters must have already had your things brought up” she said sadly looking around the room.

It was a large room that was once painted in flames of red yellow and orange. Now it had been clearly separated into four specific sections. The one closest to the door was filled with seashells and sand dollars and the walls surrounding the bed were covered with a landscape of the ocean. The next held a four-poster bed with sheer ice blue curtains hanging around it. The walls were painted with faint blues purples and pinks resembling the sky at dusk and there were feathers hung randomly from the ceiling on invisible string. Next in line was a dark corner of the room it held a bed that was covered in rich brown quilts. The walls and carpeting around it were the same brown color. There were potted plants and flowers sitting everywhere. And last was Rorie’s own 4-post bed seated next to the bay window. It still had the same flamed curtains draped around it as before. And the walls still held the same red orange and yellow flame pattern as they had all the years before. And the myriads of candles, incense and burning dishes still sat around the bed. Rorie had the feeling that the room had been expanded. Each girl still had a large amount of living space.

Before Rorie could even say anything all three girls drew their wands and whispered a neatness spell. Instantly all their things were in the appropriate places and they made their ways towards their beds. May immediately began moving around the potted plants in her bed space. Trella lay down on her bed and began to watch the feathers sway in the breeze. Ray just sat on the edge of her bed and crossed her legs with her eyes closed.

Not knowing what to do or say Rorie went to her end of the room and rummaged around in a large chest looking for something. Finally she found a large roll of black fabric. She quickly pulled out her wand and attached it to the ceiling around her bed. “Much better” she whispered and looked around to make sure none of the other girls were watching. She looked to each candle one by one and they sprang to life. The candles lit with no help from burning sticks or torches. Rorie had always known she was a Pyron or a halo with the gift of making and controlling fire. She knew that the gift was rare so she kept it a secret, fearing that anyone who found out would think her to be a worshiper of The Entity. She sat watching the flame of a candle and easily making it rise and fall, burn brighter and reduce to a spark.

Suddenly she heard a stifled yelp immediately followed by whispered arguing. “You can’t tell her!” Trella whispered. “But Trella she’s a Pyron, She’s one of us” Ray protested. Rorie could still hear the muffled sounds of May moving around her potted plants. She sighed and sat up. After all of these years it had only taken one day for these three mysterious girls to find out her life long secret. Rorie slowly stood up and walked over to the edge of the curtain. She leaned over and stuck her head out of the slit in the fabric. “You know, you girls suck at silencing spells she smiled. If you know my secret you might as well tell me yours. We are going to have to be roommates for a while you know.”

Trella huffed and stalked over to her bed where she flopped herself down log seg severely pissed off. Ray just looked to her and smiled. May kept herself busy with her plants, not even bothering to look up for a moment. “Can I show her” ray begged. “Just get it over with,” Trella spat. “She’s gonna find out anyway.”

Ray picked up a bowl off of her shelf and held it out to Rorie. She took the bowl looking unimpressed when it suddenly filled with water. Her eyes grew wide and the water began to rise up out the bowl. Then as if a gust of wind had hit the silent stream of water it splattered all over Rorie. Just as quickly a strong gust of wind blew against her and dried the water. “You’re an Auquan and Trella’s a Windstress?” Just then a huge ball of mud hit both Ray and Rorie and May whistled as if she was innocent. “May’s an Earthstress?” Rorie was speechless as the three girls nodded quietly. “Well Now I have an even bigger secret she said giggling as she wiped the mud away from her face. We’re the four elementals.”
