Part 19
*Daylith’s View*
Less than an hour of waiting in the nurses office I was called back into the main office where I saw my dad talking to the principle.
I looked at the floor in shame when seeing him. I hope he doesn’t take this too hard.
When the principle saw that I arrived, he pointed my dad in my direction and they both walked over to me.
My dad put his hand on my shoulder, “You ready to go home? Need anything from your locker?”
“No.” I said a little relieved that he appeared un-phased by the news.
“Kay, well let’s go. It was nice meeting you Mr. Gran.” My dad said to the principle before heading to the door.
“Wait, what about Timmy?” I asked.
My father stopped to look at me and the principle said, “We’ve been trying to reach his uncle over the passed hour and we haven’t heard back from him. The only other option is for Timmy to wait for the buses to come at 2:30.”
My dad said to the principle, “I’m actually neighbors with his uncle, if it’s alright, I can take him home.”
The principle nodded and asked one of the women at the desk for a form. “You’ll just need to fill out this paper stating your name, the date, who you’re taking, etc.”
My dad filled it out and moments later Timmy arrived in the office. My dad asked him the same question, whether or not he needed anything from his locker, and when he said no, we all left.
It felt strange to walk out of the school building so early. There wasn’t a soul in sight, and it was nice to think of a whole week without work. I knew it wasn’t the best way to think, being that suspension is on my permanent record, but as of now it didn’t matter to me much.
We got into the car and my dad started the engine to drive us home.
Just when I thought all was well, my dad said, “So you two were in a fight I hear?”
I knew it was too good to be true so I replied, “Yeah. It wasn’t our fault though. This kid keeps giving Timmy trouble, so its not like we started anything, it was out of self defense.” I hoped that made it sound like neither of us wanted to fight, even though I was the one who threw the first punch.
“So this boy is messing with Timmy you said?” My dad asked.
“Yeah.” I answered.
“So why were you in the fight?”
A strong tension formed in the car, and I could almost feel Timmy grow tense in the back seat.
“Cause.. he’s my friend dad. I’m not gonna sit back and watch him get bullied.”
My dad didn’t respond and focused on the road while Timmy and I sat silently for the rest of the ride.
Once we got home I went to go upstairs to my room with Timmy when my dad told me he wanted to talk in the kitchen.
I told Timmy I’d catch up in a minute, so he went ahead without me.
My dad took a seat in the kitchen, elbows propped up on the table, while anxiously rubbing his hands together.
“You know, your lucky I was home to get you. Normally I’d be at work, if I didn’t have your mother on my mind.”
I sat down across from him and said, “I know, I’m sorry.”
“The principle said something about you quitting the basketball team? Is that true?”
I looked away, nervously contemplating what to say.
“Yeah. I uh, decided I don’t want to play anymore.”
“Why?” He asked flatly.
“Well, because…” I was about to answer before he cut in.
“Practice starts in one week! Just one more week! You can’t even wait to try it? You could be missing out on being apart of a good team. What would make you want to quit? Basketball has been your passion since you were a boy!”
A small fire of resentment burned inside of me when he spoke as if he went to every game I played. He was only referencing things my mother told him, being that she had to verbally tell him how I was growing up since he wasn’t physically there. However, I held those feelings inside and calmly stated, “Because the guys we fought today are on the team. So obviously, the team sucks.”
“So it’s because of Timmy?” He asked.
I glared at him, not liking his last question. “What are you getting at?”
“I’m just starting to think that this Timmy kid is no good for you.”
“What!?” I spat getting a little on edge.
“This is the second time he’s been in a fight, and now you were dragged into one, and you’re even quitting the basketball team because of people that HE can’t get along with. He’s dragging you down son.”
I just shook my head, unable to believe what I was hearing.
“I’ve been trying to pay back my dues for leaving you when you were young by letting him stay here, but I have to put my foot down now that I see what he’s doing to you. He has to go back home Daylith, and you should try spending time with other students.”
“No.” I said. I had so many thoughts running through my head I couldn’t even formulate them into sentences. “You don’t understand dad. Just… stop talking like you understand everything. You don’t even know the half of it.”
“Then explain it to me son, because from what I see, he’s no good for you.”
I stood up getting frustrated, “He’s not bad! It’s the other guys at school that are causing the problems. It’s not like he’s going to school and starting fights, other people are starting in with him!”
My father interjected, “If that’s the case, then I’m sorry for him, but it doesn’t mean you have to get involved! And what’s wrong with his family? Aren’t they worried about him? He’s been staying here for a long time.”
“No they’re not. That’s why he can’t go home. He only has an uncle and his uncle abuses him. So I said he could stay with me.”
He shook his head and looked away from me. “No son, that’s not the way it works. If he’s having trouble at home you tell someone, you should’ve told me or he should’ve went to a teacher or someone for help. You don’t just take someone in. Listen I’ll call someone, maybe they can go to counseling, but he can’t stay here anymore.”
I was able to see it from my dads perspective, which was why I found it hard to argue. But he wasn’t able to see it from mine, and that’s what made it so frustrating. There were too many details that he didn’t know.
“No dad, he’s not going anywhere. Not till I say so.”
He stood up, “Who’s house do you think this is?! I’m not going to raise you to think you can put your word over mine! I pay the bills, this is my house, what I say goes, you got that!?”
“No dad! The time for raising me is over! So sorry you missed that part of my life, so right now your just gonna have to deal with me the way I am! Timmy’s more to me than you know, so you better just forget about kicking him out, otherwise I’ll leave too!”
“I’m done sheltering him, it’s not my responsibility and it’s not yours! And I’m not going to have you talking to me like this! Go upstairs and come back down when common sense makes its way into your head!” He shouted before turning around to go downstairs to his room.
My heart was pounding and my mind reeled with retorts too vulgar and hurtful for me to shout back. Every muscle in my body felt tense as I held back the desire to lash out against whatever I could get my hands on.
Once he disappeared, I dropped my arms and sucked in a deep breath trying to calm down. Slowly the pounding in my chest soothed itself into a soft beat, and once I felt composed, I left the kitchen to go upstairs.
When I reached the staircase I was slightly startled to find Timmy sitting on the first step. He looked at me solemnly and stood up, “I should go.”
I looked over his face and gently grabbed his arm, “No, don’t worry about it. He’ll get over it.” I said, assuming he heard everything my father said.
“I can’t stay Daylith, not when your dad sees me like that. You know how uncomfortable that is for me?”
“Yea… I know, but believe me, he’ll get over it. Please, just go upstairs.”
His blue eyes locked onto mine, “Daylith… don’t make this difficult. Just let me go back. Your dad doesn’t want me here anymore, so I can’t stay.”
I brought my face closer to his and argued, “And what are you gonna do? Go back to your uncle?.”
He looked down, knowing what consequences that would hold.
*Timmy’s View*
I’ve never dealt with Daylith one on one when he was this upset, so I wasn’t really sure how to handle him. I wasn’t happy about this either, but I didn’t see any other thing for me to do.
I liked it here, and I loved every second with Daylith, but I’ve had an uneasiness about living here ever since the beginning. In a way, I was prepared for Daylith’s dad to say he wanted me to leave. After all, I’m not his son or anything.
I’ve known for a long time that I broke the code my aunt set for visitors, and that was to never overstay your welcome. So now I had to pay the price, and face my uncle.
“Just let me go,” I said while trying to push my way passed him.
He put his arms out so that his hands gripped both sides of the wall, blocking the entire doorway.
“Your not fucking leaving me.” He said firmly.
“It’s not like we’ll never see each other again, we can still be in a relationship.” I said trying to talk it out with him.
“You know damn well that’s not gonna happen.” He argued.
He had a point, if I went back home we’d have practically no time together. My uncle would have me doing work the second I got home from school, and I wouldn’t be able to leave at night with my uncle watching me all of the time.
“Get upstairs.” He demanded.
I figured I should give him time to calm down before trying to settle things, so I turned away from him to go upstairs.
I walked into the room and was about to make myself comfortable on the bed when Daylith came up behind me and wrapped his arms lightly about my waist.
I didn’t say anything and I didn’t move. He began using his body to push me forward till we reached the bed, where he pushed me down onto my stomach. He laid himself down on top of me, resting his head on the back of my shoulder.
He stayed quiet for a minute before saying, “We just got together, so why would I let you leave?”
It felt nice, in some bitter sweet way, to see how much he actually cared for me. After listening to his dad, I realized just how much Daylith’s sacrificed for me. His room, his clothes, his passion for basketball, his reputation, his health, his relationship with his dad. It made me feel like I did nothing in return, mainly because I didn’t.
I figured I owed him enough not to leave. “I’ll stay here then. I’ll listen to you, not your dad.”
He lifted his head a bit which put more pressure on my back and I winced as he crushed a bruise, “What’s with the sudden change?”
“Well, it took me till this moment to notice how much I owe you.”
“Shut up with that, you don’t owe me anything.”
“I do so. Out of everything you’ve done for me, name one thing that I’ve done that can compare?”
“Well, you gave yourself to Marcus for my sake. Don’t you think that counts?”
I forgot about that, but to me, that felt more like a betrayal than anything else.
“Yea.. I guess.” I said while struggling to breathe between Daylith’s weight and the blankets covering half of my face.
“Alright man, time to get off. Your crushing me.”
He did as I said and lifted himself off, and we both sat on the bed.
“Should I tell my dad?”
“Tell him what?” I asked while looking at one of the bruises on my arm.
“You know, that we’re together? Then he’d let you stay.”
I huffed and replied, “Either that or he’d shoot me. I can just hear him now, ‘I’m gonna kill you! Not only is my son suspended and off the basketball team, but now he’s a queer!” I said, imitating his father’s voice.
*Daylith’s View*
Timmy’s accusation was right. My dad would probably blame the fact that I’m bisexual on Timmy too. I guess I’d have to save that surprise for later and keep our relationship a secret.
“Yea. I wish my dad wasn’t being like this. If it isn’t one thing, its another it seems. Usually my dad’s the cool guy. Whatever, I know I’m asking a lot of him to let you stay here, but I deserve to be selfish after what he did.”
Timmy looked at me hesitantly, “Why.. did he leave?”
“I’m not sure… My mom had her speculations before she became ill, but when I asked him, all he said was that everyone makes mistakes.”
Timmy just nodded his head. “So what do you think happened with your uncle?” I asked. “Your lucky he didn’t show.”
“I know.” Timmy said displaying his relief with a sigh. “He usually ignores the phone since the only people that call are solicitors, so he probably never got the school’s phone call. Not that he’d show anyway. The only way I’d get back in that house is if I brought myself there. He wouldn’t want to put any effort into getting me back, not after being gone for so long.”
“Yea, it seems that way since he hasn’t come back since the last time. But anyway, how are you feeling?”
He glanced over his body then back to the bruise on his arm. “I’m alright. After all, I’ve had worse.” He said with a smile.
His smile was so subtle, and I never noticed how nice it was till this moment. His blue eyes would hide behind his eyelashes, and his lips would part just enough to show his top teeth.
It made me want to kiss him, but I didn’t really feel like he’d accept it now. Since he became my boyfriend yesterday, it seemed like he’s been trying to keep physical distance between us. He slept so long last night, maybe that was to avoid me, and just now he told me to get off. However, I could just be jumping to conclusions, but I didn’t want to push anything yet.
*Timmy’s View*
I noticed disappointment in Daylith’s eyes as he looked away from my face.
“Something wrong? You feel alright?” I asked, curious to know what was on his mind.
“Yea, I’m all good. I was just thinking that a shower would feel pretty good right now.” He said while standing up to get a change of clothes. “Did you wanna go first?”
“Nah, I’m fine.” I said.
He nodded and said he’d only be a minute before going into the bathroom, leaving me alone in his room.
