Chapter 19
“Hello.”
“Rue?” Joe’s voice sounded tight and strange.
Rue shifted the phone to the crock of her neck and shoulder. “Joe Vic? Something wrong?”
“No, um not really, I just wanted to tell you that I’d be home early, okay. I can help you with the dinner stuff.”
“That’s sweet, Joe. I think I have things under control.” She heard the ragged breath on the other line. Too rough and breathy for her liking. “Are you sure you’re okay?”
“Yeah.” He sighed on the other end of the phone. “Just—Just be careful, please.” He longed to say more but inside found his voice failing him.
“Alright, Joe.” It’s the first time in days when her smile feels real. Too bad, Joe Vic wasn’t there to see it.
Rue hung up the phone and returned to the kitchen. There are dishes stacked around on nearly every inch of space and pots simmering on the stove. Rue told Mary that she had dinner under control too, but the older woman insisted on helping. Rue didn’t have the heart to tell Mary no.
Why would she? Mary had all but replaced her own mother by acts and deeds. It was true what they said about Christmas. It was a time for family and her mind couldn’t help but to shift to the thoughts of her new family. The one that had adopted her when she was so broken. Best of all, she even had one of her brothers back at her side.
Hours passed in a flourish as she continued to cook. At last, she turned off the turkey when she found it to be perfectly golden and moist inside. She closed the oven, and became aware of a jangling sound. She entered the living room, and this time heard very clearly the sound of the door opening. She heard the knob turn, and instantly moved towards the door.
Just as Joe Vic had promised, he was home early. Rue smiled thinking of how much work she’d already done. “Funny, you show up right when all the work is done…” She chirped.
As the door opened, a laughed floated inside. The laugh broke off into the smooth tones of a familiar voice. “I do love it when things are easy. Don’t you, My Southern Peach.”
It was Rick and there was no time to shut the door. Rue was trapped.
