------------------------------------------------
Brian was dragged into the bathroom unceremoniously after his introduction to Trent. Matt again followed and this time Jason pulled himself away from the girl he was standing with to join them. When Kevin seemed satisfied the room was otherwise empty he clicked the lock on the main door to make sure they weren't interrupted. Turning to face Brian, Kevin finally exploded.
"What the HELL, Bri?"
"I can't imagine what you mean, Kev," Brian replied pasting a blank expression on his features. He studied his angry brother quietly while Kevin fumed. "˜So, he doesn't like surprises either. Well, too bad about that. He started it.'
"I mean, when did you start dating MATT!?"
"You're dating?" Jason gave Matt an appraising look.
Matt shrugged back noncommittally. He knew that Brian had just said it to get back at Kevin, but damn he wanted it to be true. Brian knew this, too. It seemed cruel on the small blonde's part, though Matt couldn't argue that he deserved it considering the things he used to do to Brian in school before he knew what was happening to him at home. Still, Matt would hold on to the little scrap of hope that Brian actually wanted to be in a relationship.
"Yes," Brian answered for Matt.
"Since?" Kevin demanded.
"Since I said so," Brian replied. "As of now, you can forget any little plan you had to break us up. I'm with Matt, and that's that."
"But Trent . . ."
"Is probably a really nice guy," Brian finished for his brother. "But I can only feel right with Matt. He said he loves me and I believe him. I want to give this relationship a shot."
"So suddenly?" Jason asked quietly.
"Not so suddenly," Brian sighed. "I've had feelings for him for a while now. I just didn't want him to have to feel responsible for me. He deserved better than that."
"I deserve to decide for myself," Matt spoke softly.
"Yeah, you do," Brian smiled. "Cody said the same thing when he and I spoke earlier while you were getting ready. Did you know he went through a similar problem with your dad?"
Matt's face flushed. No, he didn't know that. There seemed to be a hell of a lot he didn't know about his father's life and he felt downright guilty for it. He wanted to know everything now. Tomorrow night would be a good beginning, he resolved.
"This Cody is Matt's dad's partner?" Kevin asked.
"Husband," Matt and Brian both said together.
"They legally got married in Massachusetts when all of the controversy started," Matt explained. "They said no matter what happens, they'll always consider their union binding."
Brian noticed Kevin quietly thinking to himself. He was hoping that his brother was deciding to accept his decision. He himself hadn't even been sure he was going to make it this soon, but when he was confronted with the boy he figured Kevin was trying to set him up with and caught Trent's assessing glance, it just felt natural. He was sure Matt probably thought he wasn't seriously going to give the relationship a shot, but he would reassure him later.
Cody had told him how hard it was for him to give Grant the chance to prove himself, and almost lost him because of his insecurities. Brian didn't even want to contemplate his life without Matt in it. He was the only one Brian trusted, excluding Ryan, to keep him safe. And he was the only one Brian would let touch him. It seemed only natural to let him in romantically, too. Though Brian was going to have to make it clear that the relationship wouldn't go far on a physical level just yet. He just hoped that Matt was serious when he said he would be patient.
"Okay."
"Okay, what?" Brian cocked an eyebrow.
"Okay, you win," Kevin clarified. "I won't try to push you into anything you don't want to do. And you don't seem to want to be with Trent."
"No, I don't," Brian smiled. "Kev, I know you only want what's best for me. Trust me, Matt's best for me."
Matt felt a wave of relief hit him. He knew that it took a lot for Kevin to admit that Brian should stay with him. And he also knew it took a lot of guts for Brian to insist on it. Now all Matt had to worry about was convincing Brian the relationship should be real.
"Okay, we'll talk more about your girlfriends later," Brian frowned. "But right now, I need to talk to Matt."
"Yeah, I guess Jay and I should go make sure Trent and Joey aren't still frozen in place."
---------------------------------------------------------
"Well," Matt said after he closed and locked the men's room door behind Kevin and Jason. "That was enlightening."
Brian smiled at him genuinely and Matt's stomach flipped. He couldn't seem to resist that smile, especially as it came so rarely, though more so these last few weeks than before. There was something oddly whimsical around the small blonde tonight. Almost like he was flirting with Matt. "˜Must be my imagination,' he decided.
"At least we cleared up a few things," Brian said.
"We did?"
"Uh huh."
"Okay," Matt was extremely confused now. What had they cleared up? They still didn't really understand what the hell was going between Jason and Kevin and those two girls. "Like what?"
"Like Kevin was trying to use Trent to get me away from you."
"Yeah, Matt muttered darkly. He knew something was fishy about this Trent guy. After every phone conversation in the past month or so, Brian would tell him that Kevin was more and more excited to get him to meet Trent. But Matt had pushed it to the back of his mind until he actually faced the guy. Matt had to admit he was good looking. And he seemed okay. Well, he must be if Jay became friends with him. But that didn't mean he was the right guy for Brian.
"And we made sure Kevin knew that we were together," Brian went on casually.
"Yeah . . . uh . . . huh?"
Brian's green eyes danced with mirth. He knew that Matt was still confused about what had happened. He was undoubtedly trying to come up with ways to convince Brian to really give a relationship a chance. Little did he know that Brian had never been more serious.
"We're together," the small blonde boy informed him with a frown. "You did say you wanted to date me, didn't you?"
"Absolutely!" Matt exclaimed feeling like he was going to jump for joy. "But I thought you were just trying to get back at Kevin."
Did Brian really mean it? Matt's heart skipped a beat at the thought. It was too much to hope for, but hope was all he was filled with right now. If he could just get Brian to see that they would be good together, he could make the small blonde happy. He knew he could.
"No, I wouldn't use your feelings like that. I really want to try for a normal relationship. I just don't know how satisfied you'll be. I mean I'm not sure how to get around the nerves I have over the physical side of things."
Matt stood back in stunned silence. Brian wanted to date him? Brian wanted to actually start a relationship with him? A real, committed relationship. It had to be a dream.
"It's true," Brian said when Matt didn't respond. "I want to be with you."
"And you accept that I really love you?" Matt could feel a tear forming in his eye. "You won't keep trying to tell me that I'm too good for you anymore?" It hurt to hear Brian talk about himself that way and Matt wanted nothing more than to erase those thoughts from the small blonde boy's mind permanently.
"It's going to take some time for me to stop the thoughts," Brian acknowledged. "But if you're patient . . ."
"I will be so patient," Matt whispered taking Brian's hands into his own. "I won't pressure you at all. We'll go as slow as you need to. You can set the pace."
"Okay, slow down," Brian giggled. "I get it." He huddled himself into Matt's chest and sighed contentedly. "You are the only one I would trust, Matt."
Matt let the tear finally fall as he held Brian close. He could hardly believe he'd finally convinced him to give them a chance. Well, him and Cody. He was going to have to thank his stepfather when he got a chance. Without his gentle interference, it would probably have taken Brian much longer to get to this point, if at all. Matt guessed it was probably the fact that Cody had gone through something similar that made Brian trust him enough to confide in him. Whatever the reason, Matt couldn't be more grateful.
"I love you, Brian."
"I believe you, Matt," Brian whispered. And he did. Now all he had to do was become worthy of that love.
