Fire and Darkness

Tran shoved the door to the old house open and we all stepped inside. I looked around and held onto Brian\'s sleeve as we walked into what I could only suspect had been a living room. Tran and Elise both took seats somewhere in the room and Brian and I sat down on a small couch. I kept myself close to Brian, not wanting something to come out of the darkness and take me away. You never knew what could come out of the darkness and grab you.

\"My name is Transient.\" Tran said where he sat in a corner. The darkness had settled around him like a type of blanket and though I could see him clearly it felt like he was hidden behind it. \"I can only assume that you have no clue about anything and that makes this nine times harder to figure out.\"

\"No!\" it was that woman again. \"Get away get away!\" she screamed and I set a hand on the side of my head trying to make her stop. \"I can\'t take it! I can\'t take it! Make it stop! It\'s so cold in here! So cold! Make it stop! Make it stop! Get away from the dark! Get away from it!\"

Tran was studying me intently. I set my hand back in my lap as if it had just been a small headache. Now was not the time for me to break down. \"I guess they can hear in this place as well.\"

My head snapped up and I looked at Tran. \"What?\"

\"This is a holy place.\" Tran explained. \"It was build on an old Indian burial ground and, as you can see, the residents got the bad end of that. But, since everything we do comes from the spirits you cannot do anything here. Right Elise?\"

Elise drew a small, quick breath at the sound of his name and turned his head with a small blush on his face. I noticed a shudder run down his spine as he closed his eyes, obviously remembering a bad experience. \"It\'s better to not try.\"

\"From what I have found out, usually, everything is voided in here.\" Tran continued to explain. \"Take Elise for example. He can do nothing while on the grounds of thise place, same with any other place where there are bodies buried. Even in any normal cemetary.\" he looked back at me and smirked. \"You however, are like me.\"

My eyes blinked. Like him? \"What do you mean like you? I can\'t do anything at all in here.\"

\"You can still hear and speak with them.\" Tran told me. \"That shows you are like me.\" shadows came from the walls so they were literally floating in the air. \"Perhaps you know me now, there are a lot of rumors.\" the shodows enclosed around him and he was gone. \"Of a monster who lives in the shadows.\"

Brian tensed and I could tell that he had heard of him. Tran came out of the shadows and looked over at Elise who was sitting there slightly shaking. \"You don\'t have to be here Elise. You can leave.\" Elise nodded and walked out the door. The front door opened and closed and he was gone. Tran turned back to us. \"What brings you two here?\"

My eyes stayed on where Elise had been. \"What was wrong with him?\"

Tran sighed. \"You can hear them, Brian can see them, Elise can feel them. Taste and smell don\'t count in this world we are locked into. I...\" Tran leaned against the wall. \"I can hear them.\" my face went into shock and I could barely will myself to think. \"Three senses are used in this. Hearing, which goes along with talking also, sight, and touch. If you think you have it bad hearing them...you should talk to Elise sometime. Touching, I would rather see and hear them then be able to touch them. It\'s not right, feeling things that you can\'t see.\"

\"That doesn\'t make sense though.\" Brian cut in. \"If you can already hear them then how are you able to wrap yourself in shadows? It shouldn\'t work. That\'s two different things.\"

\"And you think that you aren\'t multi-talented?\" Tran asked him. He looked back at me. \"You have the same look Elise had when I first met him. You burn.\" Tran looked out the window and let another sigh escape his lips. \"Water, fire, earth, air, darkness, light, life, and death. Eight, there are eight families. Only two people out of the eight of us can feel them, three can see them, and three can hear them.

\"Well, at least that was what I thought.\" Tran brushed black hair from his face. \"I always thought that was how it went. I was wrong though. If you burn like Elise that means you were bred from fire. That means there are more then eight.\" a smirked crossed his face. \"Makes you wonder how many there really are.\" he looked back at us again. \"So, tell me, why are you two here?\"

I shook my head as I tried to get that through it. How many were there? There could be hundreds and we would never know. How did my mother expect me to get hundreds of them? \"We came to find you.\" Brian answered. \"We were told, by Carol Brown, Christopher\'s mother, that we had to come find you and the others.\"

Tran considered this for a moment. \"You\'ve never read the bible have you?\" I shook my head and Brian didn\'t move. \"Well, in the bible (a/n: this is my made-up bible. Not from the real one.) it tells of sixteen people, all of them without families, who were put on the world to make a great change. I can\'t remember what the change was...it\'s been a long time since I even thought of that book.\"

Brian stood, pulling himself from my grasp. \"That\'s bullshit. I have never once heard of anything like that in the bible and I have read that thing god only knows how many times.\"

\"Did I say the Christian bible? Did I say any bible that normal people know about? No, I don\'t believe that I did. Now sit down!\" Tran snapped and Brian stood there a moment before sitting. \"Now shut up and listen to me or you can just get the hell out!\" he seemed pissed. Like Brian he didn\'t like to be corrected about religion. \"Someone like you wouldn\'t know what I am talking about seeing as how you didn\'t even know there are two parts to these \"ablities\" we have.

\"So, as I was saying, this is a type of prophecy, I think.\" Tran thought a moment. \"Damn it, I wish I could remember what it said.\"

\"Do you remember where the book is?\" I asked him.

Tran shook his head. \"I said it was a long time ago. I think I read it when I was thirteen. It actually may have been buried with my father.\" he slid down the wall and set his head on his hands to think. \"Well, if it was then there is no hope for it. I can\'t remember...but what are you supposed to find us all for?\"

I tried to think. \"I don\'t know. She didn\'t even tell me who I was supposed to find really. She just told me that I am supposed to find people and bring them together. Other then that I have no clue.\"

\"Then you don\'t even know if you are supposed to be looking for us.\" Tran said. \"She really didn\'t tell you anything else?\"

\"No.\" I answered sadly.

\"I saw you...\" Brian muttered and we both look at him. \"And Elise too. I saw you...last night. I don\'t know how. I was asleep. I remember I was asleep and your faces flashed into my head. It was around the time that Christopher heard his mother...this morning...when I saw you two again.\"

Tran was looking at Brian intently. \"I think...I think Elise and I should go with you.\" He stood and so did Brian. I slowly stood also, my hand clasping Brian\'s sleeve again. \"I\'ll talk to Elise about the situation and we\'ll leave as soon as possible. He might not be as willing as me so it may take a moment.\"

He began to leave the room and my eyes watched him. \"Tran!\" I said before he could get to far and he turned back to me. \"Will you...will you be able to teach us...how to do what you can do?\"

His head bobbed in a small nod. \"Of course. I taught Elise.\"

Once Tran was out of the house I looked up at Brian. \"This is going to be okay right Brian?\" he didn\'t move. I walked around so I was in front of him but he wasn\'t meeting my eyes. \"Brian...what\'s wrong? Seriously you are freaking me out.\"

\"Sorry.\" Brian muttered. \"It\'s just...\" he looked at me now. \"I\'ve never seen that before.\"

\"Seen what?\" I asked, really confused now.

He leaned down and ran his lips softly across mine. \"No regret.\" he smiled softly at me. \"You don\'t regret it. Everyone else has regretted it. Woke up the next morning and realized what they had done. Either that or they weren\'t drunk anymore and barely remembered. You...you don\'t regret it.\"

I gave him a reassuring smile. \"Why would I regret it? I wanted it...I told you that.\" I pushed myself up and gave him a small kiss. \"Is it really that surprising?\"

Brian nodded. \"Can you promise me something, for the soul fact that it will help my insecurity?\" I nodded. \"Don\'t leave me.\"

\"I promise I wont leave you Brian Kar.\" I said softly. \"I love you...\"
