It took two weeks, but there was finally a stir from my previous place of residence. It was Saturday morning and I was resting comfortably on my bed reading one of Amanda’s poems when I heard a loud noise from the front door. I frowned and curiously went to my door to look down the hall just as Melinda poked her head out of her room.
“Are you expecting anyone?” she asked, coming out as I shook my head
“I usually tell you when Amanda, Chris or Angeli plan on coming over.” I said as she passed me going to the stairs. I saw her face get dark
“Stay upstairs.” she warned as she went down the stairs as the noise came again. It sounded like banging. Curiosity got the better of me, and I went to the top of the stairs and crouched down so I could see who was coming in.
“Where is my daughter?!” I froze at the sound of his voice. ‘Why would he come?’
“Safe.” Melinda replied through the half closed door. “Anything else you want?”
“You kidnapped my daughter. I demand that you give her back to me!” he shouted and I saw a pseudo-struggle take place as he tried to push the door open.
“I am not doing anything for a drunkard.” Melinda replied “You are not going to hurt her again.”
“You have no right to take my child from me!” I could practically smell the alcohol on his breath
“I have every right to protect my students and my family.” she replied quickly. “I doubt your alibi will be able to stand very well in court.”
“You would try, but what judge will listen to a fucking dyke principal.” my eyebrows raised slightly. It seems that everyday is a learning experience with my cousin. “I don’t want you corrupting her!” that made me chuckle a little. ‘If only they knew.’
“So you would rather her be abused and a drunk. That makes perfect sense.” the door had been locked for a while now and I was amused at the fact that she didn’t deny my father’s claim, which he apparently also noticed.
“So you are a dyke!?” his words were beginning to slur into each other and I calculated the probability of him passing out on her porch to be very high. Also the probability of him having short term memory loss was convenient at this point in time. “Where is my daughter?” her eyes traveled up to the stairs were I was crouched laughing a bit. She caught my eye and mouthed
‘Do you want to see him?’ just as he began banging on the door again. I shook my head
“Melinda!!!” she looked up to the ceiling and counted to ten before crying out.
“If you do not leave my premises I will call the police Richard!” apparently that triggered something in his rational mind because he growled and yelled something to the effect that he’d be back.
Melinda heaved a sigh and slipped down to the floor. I went downstairs and sat next to her as I heard the car start and drive off.
“So. You like women huh?” I said turning to her and smiling sweetly. She looked at me then turned away with a laugh.
“How are you so calm about that?” she asked in disbelief. I shrugged
“Well, I’m not my father’s daughter for one. And two, I’d had a crush on you went I first met you, so it doesn’t really bother me so much.” she raised her eyebrows, turning back to me again.
“You had a crush on me?” I chuckled
“Yeah. Now I can safely say that I just admire you…” I paused
“But?”
“But, I still like girls…”
“Any girl in particular?” she had a knowing look in her eye and I figured I was screwed.
“How long did you know?” I asked bowing my head while she laughed
“I always had my suspicions, but I seemed like you guys would never officially get together.”
“Amanda’s a tease.” I mumbled
“I’m sorry what was that?” she asked causing me to blush and avoiding her gaze as much as possible
“I’d rather not repeat it.” I said feeling the heat in my face increase. She shook her head and got up and moved in the general direction of the kitchen.
“Well, since we’re up, what would you like for brunch?” she looked back at me and smiled her special smile. I grinned back and got up in a hurry.
~~~~~
“I still want to watch New Moon!” Angeli complained while Chris and Amanda went to get the tickets. I laughed and turned back to the posters that they had outside the Cineplex.
“And the rest of us want to watch Ironman 2... Majority rules I’m afraid.” I replied a little smugly. “But if it makes you feel better, we could see it next time.”
“By the time we come back here it’ll have stopped showing!” she was whining now
“Angi, with the sheer number of Twilight fans who want to see Taylor Luthner topless, I’m sure they’ll have enough sales to keep it open another three weeks or so.” I replied simply she kept pouting still not convinced. I shook my head and smiled as they came back.
“Good news, we have half an hour to kill…bad news, the lines for the snacks are majorly long.”
“And since we went for the tickets…”
“We get the picture Amanda.” Angeli said sticking out her tongue…
~~~~~
Angeli still got her wish though… “Ugh… oh my god, it’s like I will die from the sheer crappyness of it all!” Chris complained
“At least we have one movie to fall back on.” I supplied, while Angeli looked like she was on cloud nine
“Team Jacob all the way!”
“I prefer Team Alice.” I muttered smirking
“Amen sister.” Amanda said laughing at Angeli’s horrified look
“Are you guys blind?”
“Nope. Most of his awesomeness is film effects… you do know that right?” I replied.
“Of course. But he’s still hot.” Chris looked like he wanted to bang his head on a wall as his sister continued gushing on and on about how much she was going to marry Jacob, just to ease his broken heart. I mentioned in passing that she still needed to read Breaking Dawn but she denied it saying
“I’d prefer to live in blissful ignorance as to the romantic nature of Jacob’s romantic status.” which caused Amanda and I to laugh. We sent them on their way while we went back to the park to relax.
~~~~~
“So, what have you done for the morning?” she asked as we got back under the branches of the willow.
“Nothing much. I read most of the poem, and I’m seeing some syntax problems but I love the message, and we had brunch after an unexpected visit from my father.” I said allowing my body to slip to the ground. She looked at me with a frown on her face.
“Your dad?”
“Yeah, mom probably finally told him where I was.” I replied shrugging
“But you aren’t going back there are you?” she knelt down and put her hands on either side of my head, worry evident in her eyes.
“Not a chance. Melinda had to threaten to call the police on him.” I smiled at the thought of police coming to take him away while he was ranting and raving like a drunken madman. She took a deep breath and her head fell onto my shoulder.
“So how are things with Cecilia?” she asked quietly. I paused. Since she told me how she felt about me, her entire attitude had changed towards me, so much so that their had been whispers going around that I had threatened her life and I would only let her live if she changed. Soon after the rumors started, she managed to somehow quell them. Honestly, I was starting to see the goodness in her…
“I think I can forgive her for the bitchiness I had to deal with…” I said slowly and I felt her tense so I continued choosing my words carefully, “But she won’t be able to get into my heart… not the way she wants to.” she relaxed marginally and I put my hands on her waist. ‘What are you thinking?’
