(Tuesday)
“all right then, get up.” Angie put the brakes on Ellie's chair and stood in front of her.
Ellie regretted the mocking she had given Angie the day before, she bragged about her feat from getting from the couch to her chair and from the chair to the bed.
Ellie swallowed hard as she gripped the sides of the wheel chair, she could feel her arms trembled as she started lifting herself up. She braced her legs, but she felt a knee buckle.
She slowly lifted herself up as she then realized she was standing, she was about to give a step when Angie stopped her.
“just stand, get used to having your whole body weight being held up by your legs.”
“My left knee buckles a lot.” Ellie commented as Angie nodded.
“Ok try and sit then.” Ellie took a deep breath as she bent her knees and suddenly she was sitting. She had fallen into her chair.
“that's ok that ok,” Angie said as she crouched down and grabbed Ellie's foot and extended it as she massage the back of her knee.
“Ok I think we need to change your regime, I'll talk to Mel when she gets home.” Ellie nodded as she licked her lips, she hadn't realized it but she was thirsty.
“I'll get ya some water.”
Angie walked out, as Ellie leaned over and undid the brakes on her chair. She rolled to the doorway and noticed Mel's office, the door was open and Ellie rolled her self in. She only made it a bit pass the door way since the desk block any further access. Behind the desk next to the wall was a small bed. Some file cabinets, and a closet. She notice, Mel's desk was covered in papers, her desktop was hidden, but she could hear the humming of the machine. 'She must of just turn the screen off.' Ellie picked up some papers and notice a laptop.
Which reminded her of her laptop. “Blank,” she thought, what did it mean. Was she so sure of herself that she would never forget the password and deemed it useless to have a hint.
“Oh snooping around are ya,” Angie asked as she stood behind Ellie.
“I've never been in here,” Ellie admitted as she realized this place was new.
“Really, well makes sense, I bet Mel really never stepped foot into your office.” Ellie nodded as she finally paid attention to the walls. The were decorated by various posters, some from Movies other were motivational posters. Ellie leaned over as she saw a small 4x6 frame. She turned it around and saw herself. It was a close up of her face as she was smiling and apparently she was wearing Mel's glasses. The broken pair.
October 11, 1999 (Monday)
I rolled my bike through the front door to see Mel sitting in the kitchen. “You got a table,” I exclaimed as Mel was sitting there, head resting on the wooden table. “Yeah, this lady on the top floor is moving out, she's moving with her boyfriend and she was getting rid of some things. I manage to get the table. Perfect fit. I also got some stools so we can sit at the counter.”
In the kitchen there was long counter that was connected from wall to wall. On it rested the stoves, above the counter were some cabinets, in which Mel owned some pots and pans.
“Here,” I remembered as I handed Mel an envelop with my half of the rent. I had barely receive my money in the mail. Lucas sent me a hundred bucks and Dad was sending me $125.
“Ok cool,” Mel said. “I'm tired,” Mel muttered as she raised her head up, only to have a piece of paper stuck on the side of her face.
“Dummy,” I said as I took the paper off her face and saw that it was a receipt for the rent.
“Why is it $275.00?” Mel eyes widened as she tried taking the paper away from me, but I moved away.
“It got increased because it's two people here, and since we don't pay utilities, two people use up more electricity than one supposedly.” Mel exclaimed as I calculated in my head.
“So I still own you like thirteen bucks,” I said as Mel just shrugged her shoulders.
“Loser, you should have told me,” I said as I fished for the remaining couple of bucks I owed her.
“We need to grocery shop,” Mel said when I opened both the mini fridges only to find them empty.
One held drinks and dairy products the other held the some meats and vegetables.
“Ok well I got eighty seven bucks left,” I announced as Mel opened her wallet and counted.
Mel being the breadwinner so to speak, was the one that was keeping us a float. She worked three days out of the week. She worked a total of thirty six hours, she got paid seven bucks an hour and she got paid twice a month. On the 15th and the at the end of the month.
“I get paid friday, but so far I still have over $200 bucks.”
I did the math in my head, Mel was hiding some of her money, which was fine. I bet she was saving up for another pair of glasses, or something of the like she tends to do that a lot.
Mel had told me she had saved up and bought the mattress, the mini fridge and microwave. The stoves and such. Mel was self reliant as she really knew how to manage her money wisely. I recalled in one of the letter for the first month she was sleeping on the carpeted floor.
“Well want to go shopping?” Mel asked as she looked at her watch. “What time is it?” I asked, “It's gonna be six.” She responded as I nodded.
The super market was just ten minutes away by foot.
The evening air was chilly as Mel put her hood on from her sweater. I just blew into my hands as I placed each hand under my armpits.
“It's gonna get colder,” Mel commented as we stood at an intersection waiting for the green light.
The sun was setting slowly, as I tried hard to keep up with Mel. Mel had a fast pace, I reached ahead and grabbed her hand, as she was forced to slow down.
“Sorry,” Mel chuckled as she rubbed her thumb on the palm of my hand.
“I got a midterm tomorrow, So i'll be done early.” Mel made small talk as we reached the store. She grabbed a shopping cart as we made our way to the produce aisle first.
“really, are feeling confident for it?” I asked as Mel grabbed a small plastic bag and picked out some apples.
“Yup,” Mel said as she moved on and grabbed some banana's. Out of the both of us Mel was the healthier eater. She got some onions and some broccoli. She picked up a lettuce and a cabbage.
I walked ahead of her to the deli section. I got some ham and some bologna. We brown bagged our lunch, which turned out to be cheaper. According to Mel's calculations.
So we spent an hour shopping, trying not to over shop. We needed things to just last two weeks or so. Since the fridges weren't that big.
“I should see if that lady that's moving would sell me her fridge, there's plenty of space for it. Yeah we'll be a bit tight in the kitchen but oh well.”
Our total came close to sixty bucks, I handed Mel a twenty and ten and she put the rest in and paid.
Each of us carried four bags. Two in each hand.
“Wanna hear joke?” Mel asked, “Sure why not?”
“Ok so there are these two very elderly ladies driving and all of a sudden they run a red light, the passenger not sure of it pays more attention, again they run another red light. The passenger now sure of it tells the driver, “Mildred you just ran two red light.” Mildred replies, “Oh shit I'm driving.”
I chuckled at first as it sunk in even more and I started to laugh out loud. “You like that huh?” Mel smiled proudly at her accomplishment.
We walked back into our apartment and just in time as the skies opened up.
Mel whistled hard, “You want to shower first, while I whipped something up quick.”
I nodded as she started to put the groceries away.
(Present Evening)
Ellie was in her office once again. This time she was organizing things. Things she remember and things she didn't Two boxes were filled with work related things. Things she actually remembered, the last box was filled with some legal documents. aside the dissolution of union and the power of attorney, she found the civil union certificate, when she and Mel had made things legally official. She had found her diploma from college and high school. She found the deed to her car, she also found her passport. She flipped it open to see it stamped. Apparently she had travel to Europe twice, and to Australia once.
She was tempted to flip through her journal to see those events, but she was really intrigued in seeing all the legal documents she had. Her room was more accessible as she picked up a last folder and flipped it open.
She opened it to find a weird logo of a company and there she was stunned to see another file. It was her file from a cryogenic bank.
“the fuck,” she pulled a page out and found her application. All her information, her medical history. She flipped another page as she found the information of man. She scanned for the name and it said, “Thomas del Potro,” It didn't ring a bell, but it it triggered something else.
Ellie closed her eyes as she felt a massive migraine shoot through her head as she closed the folder and dropped it in the box.
She placed the palm of her hand on her temples and put pressure.
“MEL!” she shouted, as she heard Mel running down the hallway. Mel passed the office as she was running to the master bedroom. She quickly stopped as she back tracked into the room.
Mel notice how red Ellie was.
Silently Mel just lifted her up took her to the dinning room and she sat her on top of the table.
“Here,” Mel handed Ellie a cold glass of water as Mel ran back into the kitchen, rummaging through the cabinets.
She found Ellie's pills but hesitated, she let the bottle on the counter as she instead took out an ice pack from the fridge.
'I rather not give you a pill unless it's absolutely needed.' Mel thought as she remember migraines could be cause by anything, sometimes the pain pills were useless.
“It's cold I know,” Mel said as she placed the pack behind Ellie's neck. She turned off the light in the room, as Ellie closed her eyes and took deep breaths. It was subsiding, the sudden barrage of unknown events, was too much it overwhelmed her.
“you ok?” Mel whispered as she kissed Ellie's forehead and started to massage Ellie's head with her thumbs. In circular motion, she put pressure on Ellie's temple.
Ellie took deep breaths as Mel moved one hand and started to rub her back.
“Want to go lay down?” Mel offered as Ellie nodded.
Again Mel scooped her up and carried her to their room. She gently laid her down as Ellie kept her eyes close.
“It's hot,” Ellie mumbled as Mel turned the thermostat to cool.
With that Ellie fell asleep.
October 11, 1999
I was laying in bed when Mel emerged from the bathroom. Her hair was till dripping a little as she had a towel draped around her shoulders. She was wearing flannel pajama bottoms and a dark blue short sleeve tee.
It was already ten at night and I had class at nine in the morning while Mel had hers at nine thirty.
“you can turn off the light if ya want.” I mention to Mel, and she did and we were engulfed in darkness. I scooted closer to the wall was as she sat down and got in bed. The rain had picked up as the tapping on the window increased. The room was chilly, as I snuggled deeper into my blanket.
“Since when did you learn how to cook?” I asked as I turned to my side and could barely see Mel, the streaming moonlight that trickled in from the blinds illuminated the room slightly.
She was flat on her back as she yawned, “I've been cooking since I was ten, my mom taught me how to cook, and stuff.”
“Do you like to cook?” I asked as she tried to stifle a yawn. “It's ok, some times it tedious if I have to cook for a ton of people.”
“Like the holidays you mean.”
“Yeah mom would make me help her when we had company over and shit. Look no offense I rather not talk about my mom.”
I extended my hand as I touched her shoulder, “Ok sorry.”
She turned to her side and was facing me as she grabbed my hand. “It's ok, It's just well, all those memories are nostalgic. I miss them at times, but I ain't going back.” She sighed as she kissed the top of my hand.
“Can I still ask you other things?”
“Sure why not?
I hesitated a little as I tried to summon a good way to ask. Ever since I have been living here, we talk about the non important things. We were some how avoiding the fact, that we were in a relationship.
“When did you come out to your parents?” I asked instead and the mentally slapped myself.
Mel whistled as she chuckled a little. “I didn't voluntarily come out, I was outed by my neighbor who saw me sneak out of my house. One night my mom followed me and found me at my girlfriends place.”
“Ouch, how old were you?”
“I was sixteen, so as you can imagine the next two years were hell.”
“Was she your only girlfriend?” Mel scooted closer as she placed a hand on my hip. “No, I had a fling with some one my senior year, she was older than me.”
“What kind of a fling?” I knew I was blushing madly as Mel leaned a little closer. I could feel her breath on my neck.
“You know what kind, I know your not innocent.” She kissed my collar bone as I involuntarily trembled.
“Punk,” I shoved her as she fell on her back.
“Well what exactly do you want to know? Did we fuck? Well yes we did. Did I love her? No I didn't. It was just that a fling. She was older more experience and I was the naïve newbie.”
I turned onto my stomach as I placed my head on her stomach and relished the warmth she gave off. I sneaked my hand under her shirt, as I ran my fingers up and down. Up just below her breast and down close to the waistband of her pants.
I heard her half moan and yawn. “your tired,” I said as I pulled my hand back and turned to my side. I felt her shift and move. I felt cold air hit my back as she got under my blanket and I felt her throw her blanket over the one we were under.
Her arms wrapped around me, I shifted so I wasn't crushing her arm that was under me. Her breath tickle my ear.
She pressed her hips intimately into my butt as I closed my eyes. Soon I heard her even breathing as she fell asleep.
'Damn you fast sleeper,' I thought as I gave into sleep too.
(A/N: Yes I know what you want them to do and they will. Just let me set the mood, ok? and yes I threw another variable in there, ha ha ha, what a twist. Don't worry I'm not writing and hoping for the best, I actually have a plan.)
Enjoy.
