Chapter Nineteen
CHAPTER NINETEEN
They cooled the horses and walked them back to the creek, fingers laced, exchanging ribbing about the race.
“You gave me a slow horse,” Adam accused good-naturedly.
“Bane is a great animal.” He lifted their joined hands and kissed the back of his lover’s. “Gotta admit, you confirmed the old adage. The rider does make the mount.”
“That translate to sex?”
Roth halted, assaulted by libidinous recollections from the previous night. Sultana gave him a shove, and omitted a low wuhuhuhuh. “You just gave me a hard-on.”
“We can water them and make each other happy.”
They let the horses drink and splash, ran up stirrups, made impromptu hobbles, then stood face to face. Roth backed Adam up to a live oak. He stepped close, studying his lover’s eyes, noting his increased respiration. “What’ll you do for me?”
Adam groaned, lifted his head from where it rested against the tree trunk and kissed Roth before leaning back. “I’ll suck your cock.”
Savoring the erotic offer, Roth traced his man’s lips with his tongue. “Can I fill your mouth with cum?”
Adam shuddered. “Yes.”
Nibbling the other man’s lush, lower lip, he whispered, “I could just hold you down and fuck your face.”
“Sweetheart, do something.”
The endearment ended Roth’s playful domination. He kissed all the skin he could reach, biting and sucking Adam’s corded throat. Roth pushed his hands up under his lover’s thermal henley, caressing his flat stomach and pulling him closer. He could feel the ridge of Adam’s erection straining at the denim covering it. Roth flexed his hips against his man’s. Adam drew Roth’s face back to his to kiss him. They both groaned.
For a long moment he luxuriated in the heat and flavor of his lover’s mouth. Then, he put a little space between them and reached for Adam’s pants. Their hands collided a few times as his lover got busy returning the gesture. Roth’s back bowed. The muscles in his thighs and ass contracted from the sharp stab of lust Adam’s gripping hand gave him.
“Fuck,” he hissed, squeezing the other man’s jerking erection. It amazed him something so simple could effect him so strongly.
Neither of them seemed inclined to do more that hold each other’s cock and kiss. When Adam began to work him, Roth did the same. They clung to each other, mouths mating almost desperately, Roth leaning into him as Adam rested against the live oak. Both peaked fast. Feeling it himself and hearing a certain noise his lover made just before he came, Roth stepped back a little and turned away. He managed to keep them from covering each other in semen as his climax tore out of him.
Their groans mingled. Roth released Adam with some reluctance. The evidence of his lover’s climax dotted the back of his hand. Roth licked it away, winning a muffled curse from the other man.
They rode for a few hours, then returned at a more leisured pace. Roth called ahead to Olde Pink House on Abercorn Street. Speaking to his contact there, he obtained a reservation.
The day’s outdoor activity required they return for quick showers and change of clothes. Adam needed a few things from his place, so they swung by there first. He finished dressing and they headed to the restaurant.
When they arrived, the dining room glowed with its usual warm candlelight. They ordered a first course, then ate crispy flounder and sautéed shrimp.
Roth had considered what to do about Joseph. It occurred to him that Adam might have better ideas. “I worry about Joseph.”
“He’s a concern.”
Letting his gaze move over his very well-dressed lover, Roth noted how the tailored garments accentuated his wide shoulders and narrow waist. With his hair drawn back and his long fingers toying idly with the stem of his wine glass, Adam looked a very exotic sophisticate. “You’re gorgeous. I thought I might have to loan you some clothes. Didn’t think you’d own a suit.” He noticed the female attention turning to them almost at once.
“Told you I’m full of surprises.”
Roth cut a bite of his fish. “Back to the kid. What would you think about my offering him the guest house?” Adam put one of his shrimp on Roth’s plate without much apparent thought. He smiled inwardly. Since the first time they ate together, he’d done that for his lover, and now Adam had began reciprocating.
“Your house, your call.”
He tasted the shrimp. “God, those are good. But, I’ve never had anything here that fell below the bar.” Watching his dinner companion, he said, “I want you spending your time with me. If having him around would make you less comfortable, I won’t invite him.”
“Why would I be less comfortable?” He sounded confused.
Roth answered, “With him knowing about us.”
Adam’s black brows lowered. “I have issues.” He placed his utensils along his plate, slid his hand around the back of Roth’s neck and pulled him close for a brief kiss on the lips. Meeting his gaze, Adam qualified, “Having the world know you’re my lover is not one of them.”
“I stand corrected.”
Adam sipped his wine. “I think your opening your home to a near stranger reinforces what your treatment of me that first night taught me about you. You’re a good man. A genuine, generous good man.”
His heart thumped a little awkwardly. “Christ, a few words from you and I flutter like a school girl.”
“A few touches from you and I feel like the wounds in me won’t last forever. It scares the shit outta me,” he admitted in a hushed tone, “because hope is something I haven’t had since my family died.”
They sat staring into each other’s eyes for long moments. Roth reached over to squeeze his man’s large, though elegant hand. “You’re so handsome dressed for dinner. Where can I take you to show you off after this?”
“Truth?”
He nodded. “Always.”
“Take me back to your place. Let me lay in bed for a while watching something mindless and amusing, with my head on your bare chest.”
“I can do that.”
The following day, they arrived at the shelter early. Roth went straight to see the financial admin. As in their previous meeting, the overworked woman seemed very weary.
“Doctor Garrett, good to see you. Have a good Christmas?”
“’Roth’,” he reminded. “Yes, thanks. Can we talk?”
Pushing back blonde bangs, she replied. “Anytime. Close the door.”
He did both. “I’m not good at small talk.”
“Okay.”
“I tendered my resignation at the hospital and I want to start practicing for this establishment.”
Her face fell. “Oh God, I wish we could afford you.”
He reached over and touched her wrist. “No, ma’am. I’m telling you I’ll do it. My dime.”
“You’ve already been so good to us, how can you do this?”
She sounded so earnest in her concern, it moved him. “I’m lucky enough to have the ability. We’ll have to make arrangements with a lab, file the proper paperwork, and do some renovations. Just need you to help with the details and agree to be my boss.”
They cooled the horses and walked them back to the creek, fingers laced, exchanging ribbing about the race.
