EIGHTEEN
"Are you sure?" Eilla said after a little hesitation.
"No," Ben said slowly.
"Can I ask you something?" Eilla said, taking her head off Ben\'s shoulder, sitting up straight. She drew in a deep breath as Ben nodded for her to continue speaking. "Why don\'t you hate me?"
"Because you make me so, so stupid," Ben sighed.
"I just don\'t want you to do anything you\'ll regret. You don\'t deserve that."
"I appreciate that." Ben stood up abruptly, startling Eilla. "I just need a second." He walked out of the room, leaving Eilla on the sofa. She wondered what Ben was thinking. She was serious when she was allowing Ben to let her go. She thought about if Ben had slept with anyone that night, especially an ex girlfriend. She would have been devestated, and thrilled he was leaving so that they never had to see each other again. Ben, on the other hand, wanted to cling to her. Was it desperation? No, Ben wasn\'t desperate. Was it really that she had that effect on him? Eazy would have never let her influence him like that. Eazy would never have given her a second chance, or even heard an apology. Eazy didn\'t love her like Ben did.
That realization made Eilla feel like she had been punched in the stomach. No one would ever love her like Ben did, or maybe like been does. She had made an even bigger mistake than she could have ever imagined. She sat still on the cool leather, nails digging into her knees, furious at herself.
It felt like hours before Ben reentred the room. Eilla didn\'t know if she could apologize anymore, even though she wanted to. She just sat there, red in the face, scared at what Ben might say next. He didn\'t sit, he didn\'t move for a moment, just stood looming over Eilla as if he was unsure of what to say too.
"I want you to stay," He said, reaching out his hand, as if to help her off of the couch. Eilla reached up slowly, almost nervously, and took his hand. It felt so good she couldn\'t help but grin. She stood up next to him, still holding his hand.
"I never want you to leave."
Ben looked into Eilla\'s eyes from above, and Eilla was confused when his eyeline went from above her head, sinking to where she was looking down on him, on one knee, reaching into his pocket. Eilla felt like the room was spinning, like her knees had completely fled her legs, like her heart shut down and her lungs jumped into her stomach. Ben let go of her hand, and opened the small black box he was holding in his hand, opening it to reveal the sparkling diamond ring.
"Eilla, will you marry me?"
"No," Ben said slowly.
