Of the Heart
Two days later Eva stood with Evan, hand in hand by the grave of Francesca and her husband Marco. The dirt was piled in a fresh mound, the headstones resting silently. Eva didn’t have any tears left, she felt drained dry. People were gathered by the gravel drive of the little cemetery, like a flock of black ravens. Eva felt a hand on her arm and lifted her head. A woman who looked painfully like Francesca gave her a watery smile. “Senroita Eva?” Eva nodded. “Si.” The woman wrinkled her face with concentration. “My sister…” She said in a thick accent. Eva smiled sadly and explained that she and Evan spoke Itallian. The woman smiled. “I am Francesca’s sister Bettina, she spoke of you often. Said you and your brother were the children she never had. She wanted me to give you these.” Bettina opened her hand in front of Eva. Nestled against the black silk of her glove, rested a gold locket. “Eva, for you. For the pictures of the children you’ll have one day.” Eva took the locket and opened it. With a soft sob, she realized she still had tears to cry. The pictures inside the locket were of her and Evan. “And Evan, for you.” Bettina held up a little diamond ring. “It belonged to Marco’s mother. Passed from mother to son when they married. She was meant to pass it on to her son, but she never...” Bettina took a breath and continued around her tears. “In her will she said it was to be for you, the son of her heart.” He took the ring with a sad smile, his own eyes watering. “Thank you.” He whispered, closing his fingers around the tiny ring. Bettina shook her head. “No thank you, you both brought Francesca such pride. Such joy, I’m glad to have met you finally.” Eva hugged Bettina and Evan did likewise.
With a heavy heart, Eva let her brother tug her away from the gravesite and back to where Gabriel stood waiting. “Alright?” He asked her, taking her hand from Evan. She nodded. “I will be.” She looked up at the sky and saw a white dove flit over her head. “I will be.”

Duh duh Duh...short chapert I know, but I swear there will be lots more fun to be had. And sex too. Of course. I'd like anyone's thoughts, comments, whatever. Always nice to know people like your work. Chow Bella!
