Chapter 18
Author's note: This is a very short chapter.
Chapter 18
He drove faster than he could recall, speeding down the thankfully empty streets to get as far away from his father imaginable. His destination before he realized it himself. Parking behind the Jeep, he told him he was back at Jace’s.
It wasn’t until he rang the bell that he realized he might not be welcomed. When the door opened, Sheila Howard stood in the door, her outfit was changed from her professional attire to a relaxed and laid back look with a complementing chinos and button down blouse.
Warren stood there before her, his head hung low, shoulders tight and locked in a rigid line. Without meeting her eyes, he dared her to turn him away. “May I see Jace please?”
The silent intensity radiating off the young man reached her buried wells of sympathy. She stepped aside without a word and gave him entrance. “He’s in the backyard.”
Warren walked through the kitchen, making to the glass doors that led to the sunny flower laden exterior. He hung back, finding his steps growing heavy and a lingering question of uncertainty plaguing his next moves.
Warren was free now. Free of the baggage and the unrealistic expectations of his father. Free to be himself. Free to love. Free to be happy. Right?
He walked outside. The click of the shutter mixed with the sound of nature like the song of birds or the rustling of wind from the trees.
Jace snapped another picture unbeknownst to Warren’s presence. He turned and looked a bit startled. “Hey?”
“Hey.” Warren responded. Every nerve seemed to vibrate from the soles of his feet to ends of his hair. Jace walked towards him and stopped just short.
He dropped the camera around his neck. “I’m surprised my mom let you in.”
Warren half laughed. “Yeah, me too.”
“How did it go?”
Warren’s silence spoke louder than his voice. Jace moved closer and found his arms full of Warren’s solid form. This is what it all came down to; this moment of intimacy, of desiring to be close to another person. It was as though they would not be complete until they were completely joined physically. A union of such was beyond fruitful.
Warren thought of his father’s anger as he knew it would be there after his announcement. But a small part of him had hoped, just a little, that he would be accepting. Then, there was Jace and his long wry arms that held him with a strength that drove away the fear and anguish of being so lost.
“—Not good.” He knew Jace already knew. The next step would figuring out where to go from here. “You think your mom would let me stay the night?”
