chapter eighteen

“Died?” she whispered in horror.

Shane weakly walked to the chair and sat down “Yes.”

Thia followed him quickly “Oh God Shane,” she put her hands on his shoulders and pulled him close to her, hugging him tight she felt his arms wrapped around her as he rested his head on her chest “I’m sorry.” She continued.

“I’ve known him for more than fifteen years! Fifteen years Thia.”

“I-..” she didn’t know what to tell him, nothing she could say could make it better for him.

Shane lifted his head “I should call Dave,”

“Dave?” she questioned.

“Yeah, he’s the one who told mom, he tried to reach me but couldn’t so he called at her place and told her.” Shane was moving fast as he spoke and Thia had to follow him upstairs quickly.

“Ah- will you take me with you?” She asked not knowing if she should stay here or go back to her grandma’s house, she found both ideas scary. She didn’t want to stay alone.

Shane paused searching for his shirt “I don’t think that’s a good idea Thia,” he stopped when he saw her expression and hurried to cup her face softly “I’m sorry I’ve to leave you now but…”

“I know, and I’m not really complaining. I just don’t want to stay alone.”

“Do you want to go stay with my mom?” he asked as he gently stroked her hair away from her face.

“Yeah, can I?” she asked hopefully, she loved Ally and it would be much better than staying alone.

“Of course, but get dressed quickly and could you please give me my shirt?” he asked with a weak smile.

“Oh! Um just a second,” she quickly looked around her and spotted her dress “but I…”

“In the closet, you’ll find a bag,” he looked at her for a moment “I’ll get you something from it, just take off the shirt as I look inside.” He moved quickly and opened the closet. Thia couldn’t help but looking at the bag on the floor as Shane went through the clothes.

“I think this will do it,” he said turning with a black top and jeans in his hands.

Thia hesitantly reached to take them from him “Thank you,” she looked at them for a moment before realizing he was waiting for his shirt. She quickly picked up her bra and panties from somewhere in the corner of the room and headed for the bathroom “just a second,”

Half an hour later they were in his car. Shane was driving like a mad man and she had to almost yell at him more than once so he can slow down a little.

“Okay, do you want me to get you inside or…?” he asked turning in his seat to look at her after pulling off in front of his mother’s house.

“No Shane, I’ll go in alone,” she opened the door and was about to step out when he stopped her.

Thia turned her head and looked into his grey eyes, they were clear as if all the colors had vanished and all what was left was deep, endless grey “Shane, I-”

Her words were lost when he leaned closer and kissed her deeply. As much as she loved it she knew that it wasn’t the right time, so she slowly broke the kiss and opened her eyes, wondering when did she close them at the first place “you have to go,”

“I know but-” Shane just couldn’t let her go. He never thought it would be that hard letting her go just for few hours. He kept his arms around her “I can’t let you go!”

Her face lit up with a wonderful smile “I’ll be here when you come back,” she assured him ‘that’s why he doesn’t want to let go, he’s afraid I might run away’ she thought as she stepped out of the car.

“Promise?” he asked looking as she walked to the front door. But it seemed that she didn’t hear him ‘it’s okay Shane, she’ll be here’ he told himself as he drove away, heading for the hospital ‘God I still can’t believe it!’ he thought about his best friend and felt ache in his heart, Matt was his best friend, he had his flaws but at the end he was his friend.

“Sam, hi honey, come on in,” Ally greeted Thia the moment she entered the house “how are you doing?” she asked softly.

“I’m fine, I’m sorry about Matt, Ally. I know it must be hard for all of you.”

“Yeah it is, especially Shane,” she sighed “well, the girls are not home, so that’s why it’s quiet in here,” she smiled at the mention of her two little girls “let’s go sit outside in the sun, it’s kind of cold in here.”

An old woman came from inside the house, moments after they were seated in the beautiful big garden.

“What would you like to drink Thia?” Ally asked from the other side of the table.

“Oh, after what happened earlier I think a cup of coffee will be fine.” She said smiling at the old woman standing next to Ally.

“Khadiga, please a cup of coffee for Sam and another one for me,” she said softly to the older woman.

“She’d been in this house ever since Shane was only two years old.” Ally commented when the woman walked inside the house “she took care of him when I was away with his father. You see,” she shifted uncomfortably in her seat as if what she was about to say wasn’t something she was proud of “when David was alive, we used to be really busy; social things, parties, stuff like that. We weren’t always around, but I don’t think it affected Shane much. As you can see, Khadiga loves him so much and he loves her too.”

“But I don’t remember seeing her few days ago when we were here.”

“Yeah, she was attending a wedding of some of her relatives,” Ally looked up to see Khadiga heading their way with their coffee “Thank you Khadiga.”

“You are welcome ma’am, nice to see you again dear.”

Thia’s smile faded as she looked up to fine that the old woman was talking to her “thank you,” was all she could say. She had hoped for just a second that this woman might not know her, but how? She was Shane’s nanny ever since he was young, of course she knew her.

Khadiga put her hand on Thia’s shoulder “its okay dear,” she turned to Ally “anything else ma’am?”

“No Khadiga, thank you.”

“She’s so kind,” Thia said, managing to keep her voice steady. She could felt her throat tighten as she held back the tears that threatened to fall.

“Yes she is. What were we talking about?” Ally asked “ah- yes as I was telling you she was at a wedding that’s why you didn’t get the chance to meet her,” she frowned a little “speaking of weddings, I know I shouldn’t be asking but honey, what are you going to do?”

Thia took a deep breath “Well, I’ve decided to stay here with Shane,”

“Really?” Ally stood up quickly “Sam that’s great!”

Thia stood up too and felt Ally’s arms around her in a motherly hug “I’m so happy you decided to stay Sam,” she said after letting her go. She sat back in her chair.

“I’m happy too, I still hope that I’ll be able to remember my past soon, but I’m not going to let it stand in the way of my happiness,” she smiled shyly “I love Shane!”

“I know honey, and he loves you so much believe me. I’m sure that you’ll make it together. He’ll do anything to make you happy, I’m sure he would kill that lunatic who tried to…um rape you if he could…” Ally stopped talking as she saw how Thia’s face turned white.

“Sam, Sam are you okay?”

Thia heard the words in her mind over and over again --TRIED TO RAPE YOU--

She felt as if her head was about to explode. A terrible headache took over her head, she felt as if a door was being opened in her mind, a door she unconsciously didn’t want to open. But then it did and memories and memories kept coming back alive. It hit her mind like shocks. She remembered now, remembered her parents, her lovely mother, the song she used to sing her when she put her to sleep, then the death of both her parents when they were driving their car fast so they could come home to see what had happened to her, that day her grandma was taking care of her and she fell off the stairs and hurt her head. Her grandma had called both her parents that day and asked them to come quickly, she was old and didn’t know what to do and she thought they could do something. But they never came, never made it to the house that day, they both died immediately in a car accident “Oh my God,” she screamed as she remembered years and years of self blaming, knowing that she was the reason her parents died. She remembered it all, high school, college, friends, guys, Shane!

She remembered the day they met, when she asked him to dance, when he asked her out after it and she was afraid that he might be the one, afraid of getting so close to someone and then anything might happen to him. She thought that she wouldn’t be able to handle losing someone else. But he didn’t give up and she couldn’t help but agreeing to go out with him. She remembered their dates, their love, how he kissed her goodnight every day when he drove her home. She remembered the wedding, her wedding, her white dress, and the daisies. Everything about that day, the vows, her vows, that she’d always love and cherish him. The reception after the wedding, her conversation with Ally. And what happened after that!

Thia felt someone laying her back on a soft thing that she knew must be a bed, but she couldn’t see anything, hear anything. She was lost in the memories that came floating back to her mind.

Matt! Their conversation, what he had told her few days before the wedding and what she had seen that day when she followed Matt downstairs…
