The high school revenge

Nedia couldn’t see clearly as it was dark inside the room, the only lights were coming from few candles on the floor. There was something glowing on the bed but it was hard to see from where she was standing, she took few steps forward and right there on the bed was the ring inside its small box.

The ring! When did he take it? She wondered silently.

She closed the door behind her. “Noah!”

“Three hours ago I was a happy man. I had everything I wanted; you, Nick, my career. I thought that was everything, I thought that it can’t get any better.” He was standing somewhere in the dark, he walked to the bed and picked up the ring.

“As I told you before, I’ve been carrying this ring with me ever since you agreed to move in with me. Today I took it with me and decided to ask you again to marry me, but then you were the one who asked me, and that made me so happy,” he started walking where she was standing “And when you told me you’re pregnant I just lost it. I had to take you out of there, I had to talk to you alone.”

“I’m confused. If you’re happy about the baby, then why did you act like that? You weren’t even nice to Kate.”

“I wasn’t??” he smiled taking her face in his hands. “Honey I want you alone, want to be with my family alone, I’m sorry about Kate and I’m sorry I might have acted strangely.”

“It’s okay” she said putting her arms around his shoulders and resting her head on his chest. Nedia was tall but standing like that in Noah’s embrace made her feel small, young, it made her feel safe and comfortable.

“Ask me again” He said softly.

She looked up at his face “Huh?”

“Ask me again to marry you” He was trying to sound serious but his eyes were laughing.

Nedia knew there was still something wrong, something she tried to put at the back of her mind for the last year, something she felt guilty about.

“Noah before that, there is something you should know.” She said looking down at the floor.

“Is it important?” He asked sounding a little bit puzzled.

“Very.” Nedia knew that before she ask him again to marry her and before he agrees to it, he should know….

“What is it?” He asked stepping back to look at her.

“Last year when we met in front of your building,” Nedia tried as much as she can to sound clear.

“Yeah” he said encouraging her to continue.

“It wasn’t a coincidence.” Her voice stumbled at the end. She knew it wasn’t easy telling him what she wanted to say but she has to.

“What do you mean?” Noah’s voice changed, there was something in it that she didn’t like. It made her feel guiltier.

She opened her mouth twice but every time she shut it again, afraid of telling about why she was there that day, why she entered his building to ask if he lives there, why she asked her mother for his address.

“Nedia what do you mean.” His voice was louder this time but not loud enough to wake Nick up “look at me” it was an order and she knew she had to talk.

“It wasn’t a coincidence,” she finally looked up and his expression was confused more than angry.

“What do you mean it wasn’t a coincidence?? What was it then? What were you doing there?” She knew the answer to all his questions but the fear of what might happen made her silent.

“You knew I lived there?” he asked surprisingly.

“Yes” her voice came a bit louder than a whisper.

“You knew th-..…….wait. Now I remember something you’re mother told me when I visited her. She said that I’m the one you asked about few days ago. I asked myself at the time about it, but then things happened and I forgot to ask you.”

“I asked my mom to get me your address and she did, that’s why I was there. But I only wanted to ask the guard if you live there, meeting you outside wasn’t something I planed to happen.” She was telling him everything else except for what she was supposed to say.

“Why did you ask your mom about my address?”

Here you are Nedia!! He asked you the question you were afraid to answer, she thought.

“I……wanted to know where you live.” She said trying to say the truth bit by bit.

“Why? I mean first you lied about your name, and then you lied about Nick. If you wanted my address so bad that you asked your mother about it, why did you lie?”

“I didn’t want to hurt you!” The words came out like a cry. She couldn’t take the tension any more “I asked mom to get me your address because I had this plan. I wanted revenge!! I wanted to make you feel exactly the way I felt five years ago. But I couldn’t, when I saw you that day I couldn’t do it, I couldn’t hurt you. I love you so much that I had to lie about my name and about Nick so that you would stay away from me. I didn’t want to hurt you Noah.”

Noah stood there looking at her trying to believe what she was telling him.

“Are you trying to tell me that you wanted to take revenge that’s why you got my address from your mom?” He couldn’t believe that she would do something like that. But what was her revenge? He asked himself.

“Hurt me how Nedia?” he asked

“My plan was to seduce you, make you fall in love with me, then leave you. I had a make over so you won’t recognize me, but can’t you see? I couldn’t.” She walked to the foot of the bed and sat down. “I love you so much”

Noah thought for a moment then sat down next to her.

“I’m glad you did” He said simply.

Nedia turned to look at him with a strange expression that he almost laughed.

“You what?” she asked.

“I’m glad you decided to take revenge” He said again kindly.

“But how? I d-don’t understand” she said and tears started fall across her face .

“Hey, hey. Just think about it. If you hadn’t asked about my address and came to see if I live here, we wouldn’t have met and I wouldn’t be the happiest man alive. Nedia,” He put his arms around her shoulders and turned her to face him. “You made me the happiest man alive when you decided to take revenge. As funny as it may sound; I am happy you did so. And I would be even happier if you took this ring and agreed to be my wife.”

“Really?” She sounded like a little child asking if he can have something he’s not allowed to have.

“Really” he said wiping her tears with his hands then taking her in his arms.

“Yes, yes” she said laughing burying her face in his chest “I’ll marry you”

Noah kissed her hair, her forehead, her cheeks, her lips then looked up at her.

“You are you most wonderful thing alive and I’m the luckiest man for having you.” Noah lifted her hand to his lips and kissed it. Then he put the ring in her finger and kissed her hands again.

“Who would have thought revenge would lead to a marriage?” He said smiling and looking deeply in her eyes.

“Funny huh? Planning for something and ending up with another.” Nedia asked happily knowing that things will always be great, that she’ll always be happy and that she’ll always look back and remember this moment and smile.
