Chapter 18 – Let’s Do Lunch
“Shinwa!” Yuki cried, running through the set, much to the chagrin of many of the cast and crew. She paid no heed as she jumped into his open arms that were waiting to greet her. The two of them embraced like they had never hugged before, and she curled into him happily.
“I take it this is your girlfriend?” came a sweetly sing-song voice from behind Yuki. Yuki slid from Shinwa’s arms to see the woman who seemed skeptical even in her sweetness. Yuki’s mouth would have dropped open in awe if she had not been full of pride. This woman was… gorgeous. There was no other word to describe it. She was perfect with long black hair with red streaks that did not look overdone but perfect in the silky look of her hair. Her eyes were a brilliant shade of hazel, that Yuki suspected were contacts, and her breasts were small, but perky and perfect. Yuki grew jealous and pushed herself closer into Shinwa.
“Yes,” Shinwa said, wrapping his arms around Yuki. “Ririka, this is Oshidori Yuki.”
“Ririka?” Yuki said as she and the girl bowed ever so slightly to one another. “Aren’t you an anime voice actress?”
Ririka nodded. “Yes, I am, but my agent thought with my beauty that I should be in movies instead.”
Wow, she’s modest, Yuki thought, but she kept her thoughts to herself and just gave Ririka her brilliant smile. She may not be gorgeous, but at least her smile, even when fake, was not… fake. Yuki began to confuse herself and was forced to stop smiling to think for a moment.
“I promised Yuki I would take her to lunch,” Shinwa explained to Ririka. “So I will see you in one hour.”
“Oh, can I come with you?” Ririka asked, taking a step forward. “I don’t know this area that well. I don’t have to eat with the two of you, just show me where you are going; I will find something around there.”
Shinwa looked to Yuki for a reaction, and Yuki, being the ever loving person she was, just smiled and Ririka and through gritted teeth and in a voice that was reluctant, though Shinwa was the only one who noticed, she said ever so kindly, “No, please, come along with us, it would be nice.”
“Oh really?” Ririka asked excitedly. “Thank you so much!”
Together the two stars and the girlfriend walked off of the set and into town. Yuki decided on going to the diner that Fuji had met Amatsu at, and Shinwa and she had often gone to eat at. It seemed to be ‘their’ place and she wanted to make sure Ririka knew it was ‘their’ place. Shinwa and Yuki slid onto one side of the booth together while Ririka sat across from them, looking over the menu.
“This is such a quaint little diner,” she said in her falsely sweet voice. Yuki did not know if she was irritated with the woman because she was so much like Yuki, but beautiful, or if it was just because she was so damn irritating. Either way, Yuki took an instant dislike to a woman she had idolized while she spoke in video games.
“It’s quaint, but it’s the best,” Shinwa said, throwing his arm casually around Yuki’s shoulders, something that was widely proprietary of him, and Yuki smiled in enjoyment of it.
“I meant no offense to it,” Ririka said with a pout. “I’m just so used to living in Tokyo that I don’t have a lot of time to come to nice little places like this.”
“How long will filming be here in town?” Yuki asked, seriously considering how long she might have to be without Shinwa if they left the town for any type of shoot.
“We should be here most of the time,” Shinwa said, knowing where she was going with her questions. “There will be one week where we fly to Osaka, but other than that, we should be here.”
“So I can come visit you every day?” Yuki asked hopefully.
“Absolutely not,” Shinwa said in the same tone Yuki had used. “You can’t miss school if we carry over into the year.”
“You shouldn’t be missing either,” Yuki argued with him.
“I’m doing my homework while filming,” Shinwa retorted. “You and I both know that you would never do your homework if not in school.”
Yuki was about to protest when their tag-a-long let out a large woeful sigh. Yuki looked over to the girl, the chopsticks she had reached for tight in her hand, and she was ready to use them like weapons, while Shinwa placed his hand on her leg to calm her down. The small movement had Yuki blushing and flying off somewhere into la-la-land for a moment before she remembered the sighing actress in front of her.
“What’s wrong?”
“Oh, I’m sorry, don’t mind me,” Ririka said, waving her hands in front of her. “It’s just… it’s been so long since I’ve had a boyfriend that watching the two of you together has made me… wishful.”
“You could get any guy!” Yuki argued. So, go find one that isn’t mine! She did not say it, but it was there, on the tip of her tongue, but the waitress was interrupting before she could snarl out the cold remark. Instead, she ordered and turned back to Ririka with the politest words she could think of. “You are beautiful, and talented, what man wouldn’t want you?”
“Oh, it’s not a matter of want.” There was that modesty again. “I mean, plenty of men want me.” Yuki bit down on her glass of juice to keep from snarling and instead gurgled into the juice. “It is just hard to meet someone when you are always on the set or something like that.”
“Why not date someone on the crew?” Yuki asked politely from somewhere inside of her glass.
“Crew?” Ririka looked completely shocked by the accusation that she would ever do such a ridiculous thing. “An actress does not date crew.”
Yuki placed the glass on the table, wiping her mouth of juice with her napkin, and said, quite ladylike, “You are only a voice actress, this is your first major movie, where your face is even seen. Who cares if you date crew? You are still too green for a real actor.”
Ririka’s eyes shot daggers and Shinwa had to cough to hide his laughter. The meal went on fairly quietly after that, neither girl willing to venture out something where the other could bite pieces into their personal life, and Shinwa not wanting to cause trouble with his girlfriend or co-worker. When the meal was done Shinwa insisted that Ririka should go ahead of him so that he could say goodbye to his girlfriend, and he stressed the word girlfriend. Ririka left, slightly huffy, but Yuki just smiled brightly.
“That wasn’t very nice of you,” Shinwa reprimanded when Ririka had left.
“You’re the one who laughed.”
Shinwa chuckled then leaned down and kissed Yuki on the cheek. “It’s hard not to smile when you are around, my little princess,” he told her. He bid her farewell for the afternoon and then began to walk away. Yuki hurried to catch up to him, gripping his arm and spinning him towards her. When he looked down at her she stood on tiptoes and mashed her mouth into his. At first it was a fumbled kiss, neither of them finding their groove, but then they found their synchronized and mutual feelings and the kiss became something positively magical. He wrapped his arms around her, she her arms around his neck, and they shared the deepest most passionate kiss they had yet to discover there on the sidewalk in front of their little diner.
“What was that for?” Shinwa asked when he pulled away, breathless.
Yuki’s eyes twinkled with something sinister and mischievous, which Shinwa seemed to like. “It’s a promise of things to come,” she told him, then gave him their usual chaste kiss and went on her way, vaguely satisfied, while he went on his way wondering if he had enough time for a cold shower before filming began once more.
