\"I found you...\" the words whispered in my head. They floated through my mind and settled there. It was echoing from all over. I don\'t think that it was coming from a specific point. Usually they came from a specific point but this one wasn\'t. \"Can you hear me...?\"
Slowly I pushed myself up and looked around. I looked over at Brian who was asleep next to me. I pulled my pants on and walked over to the water. I sat on my knees and washed my face off before taking a deep breath. God, what was going to happen to us? What were we going to do? We couldn\'t just stay in the middle of the forest for the rest of our lives and I knew that my aunt was not someone to just give up and go away. Not someone to do that at all.
\"Christopher...\" I shook my head. I didn\'t want to hear it. I wasn\'t in the mood to hear it. \"Hey.\" A hand grabbed my shoulder and I turned my head to have Brian capture my lips. It was sweet. Not as demanding or as strong as the earlier ones but it still held the same feelings. It hit me then that he had been quiet, very quiet. It wasn\'t normal for Brian to be quiet. I mean, I had never slept with someone but I knew that you made noise. Brian had been quiet.
\"Are you okay?\" I asked him as he pulled his lips from mine.
He nodded as he sat next to me. \"I\'m fine.\"
That brought a frown to my lips. A blind man could tell from the look on Brian\'s face that he was not okay. \"Why do you always think it is okay to lie to me?\" I asked him. All I wanted was to understand and he made understanding more difficult then anything I had ever known. \"All I asked was if you were okay. You don\'t have to lie about something like that.\"
I tried to meet his gaze but he would not look at me. I was worried then. Really worried. This wasn\'t like Brian. Not like him at all. I knew how Brian was and this...this scared me. \"She\'s trying to talk to you. You should listen to her Christopher.\"
My eyes widened. How did he know that someone was trying to talk to me? Had he seen her? \"What\'s going on?\"
\"Kit...can you hear me Kit?\" came that same voice. I closed my eyes and tried to listen. The voice was distant. I knew that I had heard that voice before. There was no doubt about it that I had heard that voice before. \"I\'ve finally found you Kit. After all this time I have finally found you. It\'s been six long years...but look how you have grown.\"
\"Mother...\" I whispered and I felt a hand take my own. I glanced down and saw that it was Brian\'s hand. he was staring at the hot springs so I just closed my eyes and focused again.
\"Oh you can hear me...that is wonderful. You don\'t know how much I have missed you Kit.\" it was like I had died. I could finally hear my mother. After all those countless voices I could finally hear my mother speaking to me. \"You must find the other\'s Kit...you have to find the others...\"
The others? \"What do you mean?\" I asked softly. I hated talking to them in front of people, even if it was Brian and he understood. \"What others?\"
She was getting further away. I could feel it. \"Kit you must find the others. You must reunite them. Go...you must go.\"
She faded away from me then. To far for me to hear her anymore. \"Wait!\" I yelled in a sad attempt to get her back. \"What others?\" I opened my eyes and looked over at Brian. \"What others is she talking about Brian? What is going on?\"
He stood and walked over pulling on his shirt. \"We have to keep moving. They should be searching the forest by now trying to find us. If we rest for to long then they are going to catch up and we will have no chance at getting away.\"
Standing defiantly I glared at him. \"You are going to tell me what is going in right now or we aren\'t going anywhere! You can either tell me what is going on or I can go back to my aunt.\"
\"Let\'s talk and walk then.\" Brian muttered and began to walk away. I grabbed my shirt and shoved it on as I ran after him.
We walked for some time. I didn\'t say anything. I had stolen a few looks at Brian and I knew he was trying to think of what to say. To spite how much he normally talked he wasn\'t that good with words. Slightly surprising and I supposed that was why he was so quiet during...that.
\"It started a long time ago...before you or I were born.\" Brian finally muttered. \"I\'m surprised your parents never told you about it...my mother told me when I was only six...I think. I know I was very young. She told me that my father had been different from everyone else. Since I had never met him or heard about him I was excited to learn. My mother told me that everyone had thought he was a very well known fisherman and that he had been gone so much because of that.\" he was silent a moment.
\"I still remember the day my father didn\'t come home. The day we got word of his death. My mother had told me that his boat had been in a storm and that he had been killed in it. A few years later I learned otherwise.\" Brian\'s eyes were glossy but he wasn\'t crying. I assumed it was just because of the memory. \"It\'s a trait passed down from the father on the Y chromosome. You can call it a genetic mutation I guess. Only the males of the family can get it so there is no chance that the females will. Even my mother didn\'t understand why it was only guys and only one of the children was infected with it.
\"My father had been just like me. Been able to see the things that I can see and read people the way I can read people. The reason he was gone so much was because he was being used by the government. They had found him when he had been younger and he had been able to lead a pretty normal life. He met my mother when they had been seventeen. She had known about what he was and had accepted him...however other people aren\'t that accepting. The government had been using him to learn things from their enemies.
\"Just as they were using your father.\" he looked over at me and I looked up at him. \"They used your father too. So, when you think about it...there has to be more right? Not just our families and not just us. There are others like us. Others who can do things that normal people can\'t. I don\'t know if you can call us humans.\" he looked back at the path again. \"I just know that I am what I am and I know that I have to stay away from the government.\"
I kept my head on the \"path\" in front of me. There were others...the government was after us...my father had been used by the governemt. \"What does my aunt have to do with this? Is this why she hates me? Because of my father and how he was being used.\"
Brian shook his head. \"No. Your aunt wants to give you to the governemt. She\'s been giving them information on you all this time and that is how she has so much money. Of course she fears you...everyone fears us...but the government was offering her money to hand you over. What more could she want then that? Get rid of something she feared away and get paid for it.\"
\"What is wrong with Nicholas?\" I asked.
\"There is no doubt in my mind that he likes you...in some way...but you have to look past people.\" Brian told me. \"Nicholas is nineteen, an adult, and that means he has a job. Why do you think he was so interested in getting to know you so quickly when everyone else just kind of shied away? Why do you think he wasn\'t freaked out and wanted to stay around you when you were having an episode?\"
That could not be true. Nicholas had been using me? He\'d only wanted me around so he could get information? Bastard! What a fucking bastard! \"What makes you so sure that the others like us aren\'t already with the governemt?\"
\"I have no clue if they are already with the governemt or not.\" Brian answered. \"I just know that we have to find them. I don\'t know why /we/ have to find them but clearly we all have to get together. Maybe once we are all together then we will be able to understand this better.\"
I looked around and sighed. \"The trees aren\'t as thick.\"
\"That means that there is a town close.\" Brian muttered.
My feet immediately picked up speed as I ran towards the town. I needed civilization! I needed to know that, to spite how much I hated them, there were other people in this world. I came to a dead halt on a hill above the town. It wasn\'t very big but it was big enough. Brian came up behind me and we looked down at the town. His eyes scanned over the town and I looked up at him. \"Is there anyone in there?\"
He began to walk and I followed him. \"We wont know until we actually start looking now will we?\"
The streets were brick. It had a wonderful old-world charm to it. I didn\'t see how anything bad could happen in such a nice little town but if there was someone like us in the town then you never knew. We walked into to a little restaurant and took a seat at one of the tables. There was a loud clash from the back but no one seemed to care. A bigger woman came out of the back and walked up to us.
\"What can I get for you today?\" she asked us pulling out a tab. \"Thought I must warn you that it may take a moment because we are having some problems in the kitchen right now. My son is just learning how to work and it really isn\'t all that good.\"
\"What are you doing?\" Came a man\'s voice. He had a very deep Italian accent and he sounded very pissed off. \"I try to teach you everything I know and you do this! How long have you lived with us? How long have you watched me do this and you still can\'t get it right? Go outside and light something on fire!\"
A kid came out of the back and threw his apron to the floor. He looked over at Brian and I and I felt my heart lurch. His hair was red and when I say red I mean red. I\'m not talking that orange color most red-haired people have. I\'m talking blood red. I wouldn\'t have been so frightened if his eyes had not been the exact same color. It was scary as hell.
\"Elise what are you doing?\" the woman snapped walking over to him and he looked at her. \"We have costomers and you make your father so angry?\"
\"Not my father.\" the kid hissed at her. From the looks of him he was sixteen, like me, but it was hard to tell. \"I\'m gonna go hang out with Tran.\"
She tensed at the name and got a look of shock on her face. \"I told you never to go near that boy again! If you go see him again you\'ll be on the streets just like he is! Do you want that?\"
He walked past her and towards the door, clearly not giving a shit how much she threatened him. \"Hey.\" Brian said as he walked past our table and the kid stopped. \"You\'re Elise right?\"
\"As far as I know.\" he answered and looked at Brian square in the eye. \"Sometimes I\'m not so sure.\" A faint smile graced Brian\'s lips. \"Now if you don\'t mind I have somewhere to be.\"
He left then and Brian stood. \"Brian?\" I asked him and followed him out of the restaurant. \"Is he like us Brian?\"
\"Can\'t tell yet.\" Brian answered. \"We have to find out for ourselves. He could just be a really weird kid.\" he looked around and his eyes fell on Elise. I looked at the guy. I realized then why he scared me. He was on fire. Everything about him was on fire and I could feel it burning around me. \"Elise!\"
The kid stopped and turned back to him. \"You again. What is it you want?\"
Brian walked up to him but I did not move from where I stood. \"You sure make a lot of noise for someone who should be hiding.\"
\"Hiding from what?\" Elise asked him and I slowly made my way over to then, making sure to stay behind Brian. \"If people are after you then you should just head away from here. Last thing this town needs is some nut-case running away from the law.\"
\"Because you know how that feels?\" Brian asked him.
Elise laughed. \"You assume to much you know that?\"
Brian smirked. \"Or do I just see to much?\" his eyes locked with Elise\'s and the kid frowned. \"And this Tran...is he like us too?\"
I saw hesitation in Elise\'s eyes. Like he\'d been called out into the light and he didn\'t know what to do. It was nice to know that I wasn\'t alone. To know that there were others who hid in the darkness. \"Like us?\" he looked back at me and I tore my eyes from him. \"Tran...he isn\'t like me at all if that is what you mean...and he isn\'t like you. I\'ll say this again: if you have people after you get the hell out of this town and now.\"
\"Elise.\" someone said from behind him and we all looked back to see someone who was a little older then Brian standing there. His hair was jet black and his eyes reminded me of a picture of a black hole that I had seen once. \"Who are they?\"
\"I don\'t know.\" Elise looked back at us. \"They haven\'t told me yet.\"
\"My name is Brian Kar.\" Brian introduced himself. \"We came from a town across the forest. This,\" he turned so they could fully see me and I looked away. \"This is Christopher Brown.\"
\"What did you say?\" Tran asked and I looked up at him. \"Christopher Brown? He\'s dead.\"
My eyes widened. Did he mean my father? Had he known my father? \"I have my father\'s name.\"
His eyes scanned me as did mine him. I didn\'t remember him at all so that meant that he couldn\'t remember me. \"Yeah, you\'re a Brown.\"
\"You say that like it\'s a well known name.\" I muttered.
\"You say that like it\'s not.\" Elise retorted.
Tran turned and began to walk away. \"Well, better get this straitened up quickly. I\'d like to know why there is a Brown here again. Follow me, I know somewhere we can talk,\" he looked back at us and his eyes fell on me. \"Where /no one/ can hear.\"
A/N : Ha! Told you I would get this up...eventually. Just so you know I may have the first person change from now on. If I do it will say at the top \"(name) POV\" just so you know who it is. I just can\'t stay in Christopher\'s head from now on all the time because I am adding ppl. It would be to confusing and there are things between Tran and Elise that I need to describe through one of them. I don\'t know what one yet...but one of them. SOOOOO, like it?
