Delwyn kept an eye and an ear open for more gossip. He also kept at a small distance of Poppa, just on case other may find it suspicious the way they were acting together. It worked, there were no more accusations, and the evening passed as normally as a company barbeque could pass.

Some men got drunk, there was an insignificant fight at the end, and Poppa met Chapman’s friend, but there were no awkward situations anymore.

All in all, Delwyn was more than relieved when the party was over. Finally, he could leave and go to the cabin for the weekend.

“Gods,” he groaned when they finally made it into the car. “That was the most uncomfortable party I’ve ever been to.”

“I noticed,” rumbled Poppa with a chuckle. “You tried to avoid Mary at all costs. Poor woman; you’ll hear about it later on, I’m sure.”

“I overdid it, didn’t I?” Delwyn groaned, looking outside at the landscape flashing by. “I just didn’t want her to gloat about her discovery, you know. I’m dead if they ever find out.”

“Mh.” Poppa focused on the road, not answering for a moment. “Why are you so afraid people find out, pretty?” he eventually asked. “It’s no good to stay in the closet… Do your friends know?”

“Yeah,” said Delwyn. “My best friends know. Not all, though… It’s nice and safe in that closet. Even my parents don’t know yet.”

“You didn’t even tell your parents?” Poppa stared at Delwyn, in clear disbelief. “I was looking forward to meet them…”

“Keep your eyes on the road, please, Pop… And I didn’t see my folks in ages, so I won’t introduce you to them in the near future. Perhaps… Perhaps when I’m up to it. Which isn’t likely to happen soon.”

“You have issues,” rumbled Poppa. “Something happened in the past, right? Want to talk about it?”

“No.” Delwyn turned his head away, but felt his lover deserved at least some kind of explanation. “I want to enjoy my weekend with you,” he said with a sigh. “Not to talk about my past. I’m young, I’ll get over it.” He was citing a friend now, honestly.

“Yeah, you will. Probably. But I want to know, sooner or later. I don’t just want to have fun with you, pretty. I would to like to get to know you, so promise me to talk with me, okay?”

“Promise,” said Delwyn softly. He just didn’t know when he was up to it.

At the sight of the cabin, sitting so peacefully at the lake, Delwyn felt all his sorrow drop away. When Poppa helped him out of the car, he didn’t pull back immediately, but first took the opportunity to give him a long, warm kiss. “I’m so glad to be here again,” he murmured, resting his head on the broad shoulder. “Let’s have a few lazy days, hm? That would make me very happy.”

Big Poppa smiled as they walked into the house, leaving Delwyn for a moment to open the windows. “I’ll get our stuff in. You grab a few beers from the fridge, okay? We’ll sit outside for a while to wind down.”

Delwyn was more than happy to. He could use a bit of silence, after the meeting and the whole week of labor. “I wonder how this place will be at the winter,” he said, more to himself, as he walked onto the porch.

“Wonderful,” said Poppa, joining him. “More reason to stay with me, if you want to find out, eh?”

Delwyn turned to the big bear, smiling. “I’m sure I’ll stick around long enough to see many winters,” he said warmly. He leaned against Poppa when the man embraced him, and looked at the water again. “I love you, Poppa…”

“Mm… I love you too, pretty. Which means I want to know more about you.”

“Yes, I know…” Delwyn sighed. “We should go other places as well. I know, but I’m not up to it yet. I want to enjoy this place first.”

Poppa didn’t press on. “Let’s sit and relax,” he said instead. “I’m dead-tired and it’s late.” He pulled the chairs closer, and flopped down, contently groaning. When Delwyn sat down, he wrapped an arm around his shoulders, keeping him close.

“You’re truly a romantic at heart, aren’t you?” Delwyn pulled his legs up, and cuddled up against the big man. “A romantic beast… Like in a fairy tale. But then real.”

“True,” grinned Poppa. “It’s like The Beauty and the Beast, you and I. The adult version, of course.”

Delwyn chuckled, but didn’t reply. At first he’d expected this weekend to be all sex and little talk, but as they’d spent all week together, that urge was less severe. He would be happy to spend the night between Poppa’s arms, just to be close to him. He felt safe, with the big man. “We have no obligations, right? No shopping for groceries?”

“Baby, I could feed an orphanage if necessary. I’ve brought it all. Relax, pretty. We have no other obligations than to enjoy ourselves.”

“Good…” Closing his eyes, Delwyn relaxed. “Wanna go for a swim?”

“No… Too lazy to move. You can go, if you like…”

“Mmh… ‘Fraid I’ll fall asleep and drown,” shrugged Delwyn. “And then you’d have to rescue me. Let’s just sit. You can carry me upstairs later.”

Poppa promised to take him up, if he fell asleep, and closed his eyes as well.

In the end, it turned out they both fell asleep, sitting on the porch in the warm night. Hours later, Poppa woke up, and carried his smaller lover up to bed. The blonde didn’t notice anything. He didn’t realize he was in bed until he woke up, many hours later.
