"Do you want me to leave?" Eilla asked, finally.
"No." Ben said quickly.
"Is there something I can do for you?"
"No." He responded slower that time. Eilla wanted to throw her arms around him once again, let him breath into her neck, feel his fingers clinging to her back, holding on to her as tight as he could. She thought back to the night when he learned his brother Nate was in a car accident two years before. Nate had since recovered, but initially the outlook was very bleak, and Ben was having trouble finding a flight to Seattle to see his brother. It had been the most devestated Eilla had ever seen him. That night, Ben had asked her not to talk, not to offer any advice, but only to be there with him. He only wanted to hug her and know in her heart she cared deeply. She needed him to feel that again.
"Ok." Eilla respected anything Ben wanted to do at that moment, but could not stop her hand from reaching to his forearm, where she rested it and sqeezed gently. Ben seemed to jump a little in surprise, but then reached over and covered her hand with his own. Eilla could not help but grin, trying to put her head down so Ben didn't see her. As her head lowered, her forehead gently brushed Ben's shoulder. He slowly rolled his shoulder back under her face, as if asking her to rest there. She did, laying her cheek low on his shoulder, trying to scoot herself closer to him.
She felt almost awkward. They were so comfortable around each other, but at this moment it was like they were on a first date. Neither was sure how far they could go, what moves they could make, without making the other one uncomfortable. ben seemed to relax as Eilla moved a little closer, trying not to make it completely obvious she wanted to be much closer to him.
They sat there motionless and silent for what seemed like forever. Ben was looking down at his hand on top of hers, happy to feel her weight on his side. He knew she wanted to talk, she wanted to make sure he was okay.
"Eilla, I'm okay," He said, breaking the quiet that had enveloped the room. He tightened his grip on Eilla's hand, but did not look at her.
Eilla gently gripped at Ben's arm, responding with only the gesture. She didn't know what to say. Ben silently answered her back by intertwining his fingers in hers, burying his shoulder farther behind her head. Eilla responded in a habitual way, lifting her face to his waiting for a kiss. The instant she did, she felt silly. He might not be ready to kiss her again. She slowly brought her head back down, hoping Ben would think She was just readjusting her position.
"Will you stay here tonight?" Ben asked.
"No." Ben said quickly.
