Chapter 17

The plane is huge. We are in first class. There are little screens in the back of each chair. I’m sitting by the window, Steph is in the middle, and Robby is in the aisle. We all have different movies playing. Robby is watching a movie I’ve never seen before, Steph is watching Euro Trip, and I’m watching The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.
I’m not really paying attention to the movie as much as Robby and Steph are. I take out my notebook, and a pen. I place them on the tray. I think for a minute. I really don’t have anything to write about right now.
I then remember a time in the past, when I use to play guitar all the time, and I start writing. ‘I wonder what my sister would think of me now. I use to play for her all the time when she was sick. She loved it. Right before she died, she made me promise that I would never stop playing. I didn’t really keep that promise. I don’t really why I even brought my guitar to this war, with me! It’s just been lying under my bed. Maybe I should take it out and play it when I get back. Maybe I should write a song. Ya that’s what I’m gonna do. I’ll make it about my sister, my mother, my father, my brother, my friends, Katie, Henry, everyone from my past, everyone from my present, and everyone from my future. It will be about who I was, is, and will be. But how do I start it? What will the tune be? I think I should do the words first. Ya that’s what I’m gonna do.’ I look at Steph. She’s laughing at the movie. I look back at the paper, and I start writing the song.

Lost and Found

In the mountains
All by myself
I see this bird
Singing this sad song
And it goes like this

Please look at me
And tell me your name
I’m all by myself
I have so much pain

I need someone to lean on
A shoulder to cry on
Because I don’t want to SCREAM!

It is cold up here
Up here in the mountains
It is snowing so hard
There is a white blanket under me

I walk endlessly
Around and around
Not knowing where I’m am
Or where I’m going

But what is this I see?
I see a crimsin puddle
A deer lying dead
Shot

A tear falls down my face
And I cry
I look up to the sky
And sing a song
And it goes like this

Please look at me
And tell me your name
I’m all by myself
I have so much pain

I need someone to lean on
A shoulder to cry on
Because I don’t want to SCREAM!

Still walking
All by myself
But the ice is melting
Why?

I hear water running
I see the sun up above
Footprints in the snow
I follow

I find a girl
She looks lost to
She smiles at me
Gives me a hug

I ask her where we are
She doesn’t know
But we link arms
And we go

She looks at me
She sings a song
And it goes like this

Please look at me

And tell me your name
I’m all by myself
I have so much pain

I need someone to lean on
A shoulder to cry on
Because I don’t want to SCREAM!

We keep walking
Walking for a long time
The snow is melting around us
The ground is now green

We find many people
All lost and alone as us
We help each other find our way
So we can be free

We find a house
It’s small
There is someone inside
The fire is lit in the fire place
We go inside

It is warm
They give us food
And show us the way
The way home

We walk together
Not lost anymore
And we sing a song
All together as one
And it goes like this

You looked at me
And told me your name
I’m not by myself
I have no more pain

I have someone to lean on
A shoulder to cry on
And now I don’t...

You looked at me

And told me your name
I’m not by myself
I have no more pain

I have someone to lean on
A shoulder to cry on
And now I don’t have to
I don’t have to scream.

I look at it, I like it a lot. I think to myself, ‘I wonder what it’s gonna sound like singing it.’
We are now flying over the ocean. I have no idea how long we have been flying. My movie is over, so I pick another one to watch.
I look through the list. Road Trip, Rough Riders, Spirited Away, What Women Want, Ice Age, Coyote Ugly, and Happy Feet. I decide to watch something funny, so I pick Ice Age.
I watch that movie and a couple of others the rest of the long plane ride.
