Detective Cain sat staring at the computer screen, his eyes transfixed on the words typed there. Aiden had done what she said she would, she found out why Miranda Dawson caught his attention, and it was something he hadn't expected.
Randi had originally been born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1989 at the local hospital. Her parents, Hayden and Robert Dawson owned an antique store in the center of town. When Randi was five her parents had died in a car crash that miraculously spared Randi's life. She had been moved into foster care in Charleston until she was seven, then another in Boston until she was ten, moved again to Indianapolis until she was twelve and finally to live with the Andrews in Nashville when she was sixteen. The police report stated she had been kidnapped around eight-thirty that night while her foster parents were out. No one had ever found her, until she showed at the hospital a few days ago. But none of this information really helped him, it was the connecting information that Aiden had found on Randi's biological parents. Her mothers name had come up in a nation wide search.
Hayden Cain, formally Hayden Ivers, had been a young widower at twenty years old. She had been married to a fireman by the name of Scott Cain. They had been wed at nineteen with a baby on the way. But they would never reach their one year anniversary. Scott died in a fire just three months before the baby was to be born. Hayden put the baby up for adoption under the one condition that she was able to name her son.
Lucas Cain was adopted by a couple from Oregon that would never be able to have children of their own. Hayden stayed in South Carolina and was remarried to Robert Dawson and had a baby girl a year later, Miranda Dawson.
Lucas's eyes dances across the screen. He still couldn't believe it and he had read and reread it for for the last fifteen minutes. Randi was his sister, a sister that he had never known about. He knew that he had been adopted but he had never known their names or what they looked like. Now he did. He stood up from the table abruptly. He wanted t talk to Aiden about this. To know if he should tell Randi or not. Then he remembered, Aiden had taken Edward to go get his sister before anything happened to her. They had been gone an hour and it was going on fire-thirty. The sun would be coming out soon. He needed to talk to anyone, to figure out what the hell was going on. Lucas realized that he had been standing for awhile. Other officers were beginning to stare at him. He ran a hand through his hair and headed back to the holding area. Randi was still in a cell, only she wasn't locked up anymore. He was starting to worry about her. Before Aiden and Edward left she had asked for a box of plain white chalk. Lucas was only lucky enough to find half a box. Randi had started drawing symbols on the two walls of the cell. He didn't ask her what they meant. He wasn't sure if he wanted to know or not.
When he walked into the holding area, Randi was sitting in the middle of the cell. There wasn't a single clear space to walk. She had covered the floor in chalk symbols.
"You doing alright in here, Randi?" he asked. She lifted her eyes to look up at him.
"I guess. I ran out of room." she told him glancing at the floor.
"What do they mean?" he finally got up the will to ask. Randi shrugged.
"I don't know. I just see them and I draw them." Lucas decided to take a big risk.
"Randi, what do you know about your birth parents?" he knelt down and sat on the floor by the cell opening.
"They were from South Carolina, died in a car wreck. Why?"
"What about your mother?"
"Not much. Just that she's been married before. What does this have to do with anything?" she wanted to know. Lucas was quiet for a minute.
"Your mother was married to my father before she married yours." he told her. Randi stared at him dumbfounded. What was he talking about? he had to be lying. There was no way that he was her brother, and yet, there had always been a familiar look about Lucas. The set of his eyes, the way his hair shined in the light. A memory came flooding back to her. She had been seven at the time. It was right before she had left Charelson. It had been almost a quarter to four and she had been walking home from school. Two boys around sixteen stopped in front of her and wouldn't let her pass. They began to push her around and shove her to the ground. One of them grabbed her arm and pulled her behind a nearby building. By this time the other boy had run away not wanting to be aprt of this any longer.
Randi screamed and kicked at the hands that held her. He started ripping away at her clothes. Randi had started to cry, why wouldn't anyone answer her? They boy was pulled off of her and Randi scrambled back. There was another boy around the same age holding the one that had been on Randi by the arm. He punched the meaner one a few times until he hit the ground, he quickly came to his feet and ran off.
The boy who she had always called her savior, walked towards her. The look in his eyes had so much anger in them that Randi cowered away from him with a whimper.
"Hey now, I'm not going to hurt you, alright?" he told her calmly. "What's your name?" he asked.
"Miranda." she said through sniffles.
"My names Luke. That kid isn't going to touch you again." he unbuttoned his long sleeve shirt and helped her put it on. He wasn't going to have a little girl walk around in torn clothes that were about to fall off of her. He helped her come to her feet and took her hand. Together they walked back to Randi's house. Her foster parents had been so relieved that she was safe.
"Randi?" Lucas said, pulling her out of the memory. "Randi, what is it?"
"Have you ever been to Charleston, and help save a little girl from a bad person when she seven?" Miranda asked. Lucas stared at her a moment. His brows furrowed and his eyes then grew wide.
"It was you, the little girl who was almost raped. But that had to have been at least ten years ago. How did you remember?"
"I didn't. Not until you mentioned my mother. I started thinking about how familiar you looked and I then I remembered." An amused smile came on her lips. "I still have the shirt. It's what I was wearing when I was kidnapped." Lucas sighed and looked away from her.
"I was almost expelled from school for running away from our field trip to save you." he still wouldn't look at her. "Randi, your foster parents will be here within the hour. They've fully expressed that they want to take you back to Tennessee." Randi looked at him horrified and stood to her feet and jumped over the chalk and out the cell door. Lucas had to roll out of the way to avoid her. He stood up quickly. Randi clutched at his arms with wild eyes.
"No! Lucas, you can't let me go back with them! They're the ones that had me kidnapped." She cried.
"What?" Luca asked confused.
"I see things. Mostly things that haven't happened yet. I was shown the death of my foster mother. They were terrified of me. When I was being brought here I saw a vision of the two of them discussing about my abduction. I don't want to go back with them."
"You're positive that they were the ones who had your kidnapped?"
"Yes, i saw it. And don't look at me like I'm crazy!" she went to walk away but Lucas pulled her into a hug.
"I don't think you're crazy. I've seen a lot of things that I find unexplainable. But I believe what you say and we'll figure this out. Your hear me?" Randi nodded against his chest.
From where they stood, Randi and Lucas heard screams from the main office area. Lucas turned keeping her behind him and drew his gun. There was a lot of crashing, things being thrown around. Then three figures came into sight. Lucas only knew two.
Edward was carrying a woman in his arms who he presumed was Jaicyn. Aide was pushing him into the room with her gun pointed where they had just come from.
"Aiden, what the hell is-"
"Barricade the door, now!" she yelled at him. She shut the door and locked it.
"That isn't going to work." Edward said. Randi knew she had to do something. What could she do? She looked around and it suddenly fell into place.
"Edward, take Jaicyn into the cell. Don't stop on the chalk." he didn't move. "Do it!" she said shoving him. This time he went. He lay Jaicyn on the bed and made sure not to mess up the chalk. Randi picked up the remaining piece of chalk. She didn't give the others any warming before she pretty much threw them into the other cell. Randi fell to her knees and started drawing more symbols on the floor as quickly as she could. Something pounded on the door once and it splintered into hundreds of pieces.
Seth stormed into the room in a gust of fury. Miranda's heart raced as she kept drawing. Lucas pointed his gun at him. The bullets were fired in an explosion of sound. Three hit Seth in the chest but it didn't slow him. He picked up pace and ran for them. Randi's hand was moving almost too fast to see. The chalk broke in half as Seth made it to the door. The symbols glowed dark green and Seth was thrown back into the far wall.
"You evoked runes? I didn't know you knew them?" Aiden said astonished. "These are ancient." she whispered, studying the symbols.
"I don't know them. I just knew I had to draw them."
"They're symbols I knew when I was growing up." Edward told them. Seth came to his feet slowly.
"One moment of luck isn't going to save you again. Or the lives of your vampires." Seth said to Edward.
"They are stronger than what you think." Edward told him.
"Perhaps, but they cannot fight the sleep that dawn will call on them. Just as you won't be able to fight it." he said grinning. He had his eyes fixed on the window of the cell. Edward turned to look at it. The faint rays of light were starting to creep into the cell. "I'll enjoy watching the two of you burn."
"No, you won't." Randi told him. She pulled off her shirt and handed it to Edward through the bars. He was lucky she had thought of it. He took his own off and stuffed them both into the barred window. Some light would still be able to get through. He climbed onto the bed with Jaicyn and sat her up. Edward was going to kill Seth for hurting his sister. He lay down on the bed and lay Jaicyn down on top of him. He pulled the blanket up over them so they were completely covered. The sunlight pressed against the window and the shirts.
Randi's knees wobbled and she stumbled. Lucas caught her from hitting the ground. "You okay?" he asked. She nodded.
"Yeah, I think he's sleeping now and that's why I felt weak." she explained. It was the only reason she could come up with.
"Here," he said, unbuttoning his shirt. He handed it to her. He wouldn't have her going around in just her bra. "Put this on." Randi took it and slipped it on.
"Just like old times." she said smiling. Seth out out a scream that almost turned his face purple. He ran to the closest wall and started punching it with both fists. He wanted them to die, for all of them to die. Why couldn't things just work out for him? Rage consumed him as he wrecked everything he grabbed.
"This won't be the last time you see me. I promise you that. I will have your blood spilled at my feet when this is all over." he screamed, and then he was gone.
"This is going to take alot of explaining." Aiden said. Randi could only nod.
