Chapter Sixteen

Review Responses

Bookworm51485: Things will turn out alright with Shay and Randy. It was all just a misunderstanding. There will be more Larry and Bryant in the next chapter. I wanted to bring this chaos to a somewhat good standstill first before I crossed over.
Blushing: I tried getting it out sooner. It didnt take me 2 weeks like last time. LOL. Oh the drama is definitely not over with Richie and James. Richie is pissed.
keyonnamc: I agree. He really deserved a kick in the balls too, and prevent him from ever reproducing again. Randy and Shay's rift won't last.
Ao: James IS an asshole. Thanks for reviewing.
Child of the Darkened Moon: Haha, yes I get the picture. Poor EVERYBODY! You see if Richie figures it out in this chapter.
Lina: Well, Richie gets pissed with somebody here, but I'll let you see who it is.

My Story: Here's another one for you then.
Kyo-nezumi: Thank you and I DID enjoy Rain. I left you a review too. :)
k-girl: Thanks. Yeah, with news like THAT, Randy wouldn't be able to wait long before he talked to James.
impressionata: Things do get better with Randy and Shay....not so much for everything else that's going on around them though. ;)
obeliskbeliever: Yep, and things will get even more interesting. I'm starting to wonder how long this story will be before I end it.

Chapter Sixteen

Same Tuesday night—same time, different place

*knock, knock, knock*

“Randy?”

“….”

*knock, knock, knock, knock*

“Randy, you there?! It’s your Aunt Corrine!” The silver-haired woman heard footsteps coming towards the wooden door with the oval-shaped frosted glass window and she put a smile on her face. “There you……..” Corrine stopped mid-sentence when she saw Shay standing on the other side with Jack in his arms and both of them in their pajamas.

Shay immediately recognized the older woman as being one of the ladies who was bad-mouthing his family in the canned vegetable aisle at the grocery store. “Hello.” He said.

“What are you doin’ here?” She asked without delay.

“I live here.” He countered.

Corrine frowned. A look of perplexity washed over her and she almost couldn’t believe her ears. “You….You’re living here?”

“Yes.”

“With Randy?”

“Yes. Now may I ask who you are?”

“I’m Corrine Dodson, Randy’s aunt.”

This witch that said so many mean things about my family….is Randy’s aunt? Do ALL his family members effect my family in some way? Shay opened the door wider for the woman to come inside.

“So is Randy here? We need to talk.”

Shay shifted Jack in his arms. “No. He hasn’t gotten home yet.”

Damn it. Well, SOMEONE is gonna know what needs to be done around here then. “Well then, maybe I could talk to you instead.”

“Okay.”

“Maybe we could take this into the living room?” Shay nodded and they both walked into the nicely decorated living room. Shay sat on the couch with Jack on his lap and Corrine sat in the adjacent arm chair.

“I wont sugar-coat this so I’ll just say it—leave Randy alone.”

Shay looked stunned. “W-What?”

“Stay away from my nephew. You’ve caused him nothin’ but grief since you both met.”

I’ve caused him grief?”

“Yes. He used to be lively, humorous, and full of happiness. Now, he seems depressed and he—he just sulks.”

Shay hugged his boy up close to him and started to chuckle. “What could possibly be funny about this?” Corrine asked, angered that the young man could laugh at her nephew’s depression.

“You.”

“Me?”

“Yes. You.”

“You don’t even know me.”

“I know enough. Because just like you did at the grocery store spreading rumors with that lady, you’ve become no different than the rest of this town. This town is what’s beatin’ him down, but it’s not the folk here that are makin’ him depressed.”

“Are you accusin’ me of bein’ the reason for his depression?”

“Why do you think he doesn’t talk to you anymore about anythin’? I’ve been here for weeks now and he never told you I was livin’ here? I guess he didn’t tell you I’m pregnant either.” Corrine looked frozen. “Randy’s experiencin’ things right now and he needs family. Immediate family. His parents are dealin’ with their divorce, so he looked towards you for comfort and all you want to do is gossip. You know, he told me about you and your husband once. He said he used to love to come down here and spend summers with the both of you. He said he often wondered why y’all were never his parents because he said you never fought with each other and you always made time for him. I guess he’s probably wonderin’ what happened to that.”

Shay looked to the silver-haired woman and saw a mist of tears in her green eyes. Maybe he hit a nerve?

Later that night

Richie pushed James away harshly when the blonde tried to reach for him. “Don’t touch me! Don’t you dare try to touch me, James McDonald! Not until you tell me what the hell is goin’ on here!” He flashed the picture of Jack in his face. “That argument had somethin’ to do with this boy, didn’t it?”

“No, it didn’t.”

“Then why did Randy bring this picture to you? He must be yours, otherwise why would you get so pissed at seein’ him?”

“That is NOT my kid, Richie.” James dabbed his bleeding lip with a tissue.

“’Shay Gibson is a liar and easy ass.’ Isn’t that what you said? That was all I heard but it was enough for me to put 2 and 2 together. Apparently,” Richie looked down at the picture. “two years ago, you were fucking this Shay behind my back. He got pregnant, you left him, and now he’s datin’ your cousin who’s just found out the truth……Am I right?”

“Richie—“

“Don’t lie to me, James.”

“Look, this is all just a—“

James stopped when Richie turned away from him, tears forming in his eyes. “Why can’t you give me a straight answer? It’s because it’s the truth, isn’t it? You had an affair.”

“I did not have an affair and that boy is not mine.”

Richie shook his head. “You’re a liar…”

“Richie—“

The brunette turned around quickly, facing James. “NO! YOU’RE A FUCKING LIAR!”

“Stop yellin’. You tryin’ to wake the kids?”

“I don’t care, James! I don’t care! You deceived me! You went out screwin’ somebody else while I was pregnant with YOUR child?!”

“I never touched Shay.” James voice started to carry.

“Who the hell are you tryin’ to convince with that bullshit?! Everythin’ Randy has accused you of doin’, I believe it, cause you were practically absent when I was pregnant with Sabi!”

James sighed. “Baby—“

“Don’t you dare baby me, you son of a bitch!”

“Dad, Mama, why are you guys fightin’?” Tristan asked from inside the door that led to the deck they were standing on. He wore his Spider-Man pajamas and his brown with blonde streaks hair was shooting all over the place.

James reached out a hand and the nine year old walked over to him. “Nothin’ kiddo. We were just havin’ a disagreement is all.”

Tristan looked to his mother who quickly tried to wipe the tears away. Their disagreement must’ve been really bad. Mama hardly ever cries. “Are you sure?”

For the sake of not wanting to upset his son, Richie plastered on a smile. “Sí, mijo. Everythin’ is fine.”

Late that night

Arriving home once again in the middle of the night, Randy walked into the lake house. After leaving James’ house in an uproar, he considered heading to the bar again to have some drinks but remembered what happened the last time he came home drunk and decided to just drive around instead. Eventually, he came upon a single story red brick home with a paved driveway, thick green grass, and a matching two car garage along the side…..Roy and Corrine’s house. Randy wanted to get out the car and knock on the door. He was dying to go inside the ranch house he’d been in over a million times before and tell his aunt what was going on in his life and ask her for her support. But he knew better. The first words that would come out her mouth would be “I told you so” and Lord knows what else.

She just doesn’t understand that I love Shay and he’s gonna be a part of my life now.

The house was quiet as the blonde walked into the house. Before when he had first moved to Plumsfield, the silence was expected. Now that he had Shay and Jack living there with him, he’d come home to the sounds of squeals, giggles, food being chopped, and home-cooked aromas.

After hanging up his jacket, Randy went up the stairs to the bedroom. He opened the door and saw Shay lying asleep in bed on his side—Jack was next to him under his chin, sucking his favorite ring and middle fingers in his sleep. Randy shook his head and smiled at the sight. Jack will sleep under Shay until he turns 30 at this rate…….and Shay won’t stop him either. Removing his clothes, the blonde took a quick shower then put on a pair of boxers and climbed in the bed without waking Shay.

But sleep didn’t come to Randy. He laid on his back, staring at the dark ceiling. The truth was, he couldn’t stand being so close to Shay and not touching him. The way the old t-shirt he wore had twisted around him slightly in a way that it hiked the bottom hem up, revealing his flanks, made the blonde crazy. Even though he knew the brunette was pissed at him and would probably smack him for doing this, he turned to his side and spooned Shay from behind, wrapping his arms around his waist about the area of where their baby rested. So much better. Sleep came in an instant.

“Ugh.” Shay murmured as nausea came over him. He untangled himself from Jack and rushed to the bathroom to empty his stomach. Once he was finished, he flushed and started to brush his teeth. That’s when he heard the light knock on the door.

Randy peeked in. “Shay?”

“Ugggghhh.” The younger man moaned from over the sink.

Randy grabbed an extra bathrag from the shelf and wetted it in the sink. Folding it length-wise, he reached towards Shay to put it on his forehead. The curly headed brunette grunted and smacked his hand away. Not taking a ‘no’—or a grunt—for an answer, Randy reached again, taking him by the chin and placing the cool rag on his forehead. He heard Shay sigh.

“Morning sickness getting worse?”

Shay nodded. “This is the third time this morning. If I go again, I’m not gonna have anythin’ left.” Randy smiled. “Thank you.”

Randy moved the rag down to his flushed cheeks. “You’re welcome.”

“Where were you?”

“I…..just went out for a drive.”

“That’s all?”

“That’s all.”

Shay blindly reached for Randy’s left hand and lifted it up. “Then how do you explain this?” he referred to the red, bruising, blotches on his knuckles. Randy turned his eyes away. Annoyed with the silence, Shay moved the rag off his face. “Randy?”

“I hit James.”

“…….What?”

“I went to his house after work and I told him about Jack. I told him I knew everything.”

“He still denies it?”

“Yeah. He does.”

Shay nodded. “So why did you hit him?”

Randy looked Shay deep in the eyes. “Because he was talking bad about you.”

“You didn’t have to do that for me, Randy.”

“Why not? I love you, don’t I?”

“I don’t know—do you really? You seemed to want to push me towards James last night.”

Randy stepped back from Shay, folding his arms across his chest. With a solemn look on his face, he spoke, “When I found out the truth, I was floored. My first thought was shock, you know? Disbelief. Then it grew to resentment against James, because he was the one who had you and Jack…..not me. I felt like you were my cousin’s family.” He sighed. “I felt second rate. Like I was that step-dad that could never fall in with the rest of the family. I got drunk thinking that would help me forget all about it, but it didn’t. I took my frustration with him out on you and I’m sorry.”

Shay placed his hands on the sides of his face. “James has no place here. You’re the one I care about. You’re the one I’m havin’ this baby with. You’re the one Jack calls his daddy. And in all instances, you are his daddy. The three of us are your family, Randy, nobody elses.” Randy nodded and Shay smiled. “You feel better now? Do I get my real Randy back?”

Randy answered by hugging Shay tight and kissing his neck.

Three months later

Wednesday afternoon

“Shay Gibson?” A lady nurse called. Shay stood from his chair in the waiting room and walked to the woman, Randy followed closely behind. Now out of St. Augustines and so far doing well, Shay let Bryant watch Jack for the two or so hours he’d be away. She led the family into an examination room but before she left, she told Shay to remove his shirt and put on a paper smock. After doing so, Shay sat waiting for the doctor. Twiddling his thumbs and gazing innocently around the room, Shay finally caught Randy staring at him with a loving smile on his face.

Shay chuckled. “what are you smilin’ at?”

“I’m just excited about finding out what we’re having.”

“I know. So am I. This is so odd for me. When I was pregnant with Jack, I went to all my appointments with Mama or my cousin Buggy.”

“Well, this time it’s me who’s gonna take you to your appointments…..all of them.”

Shay laughed. “You don’t have to take me to all of them, Randy.”

“I know, but I want to.”

Just then, a lady doctor with fiery red hair came inside the room. Instructing Shay to lie back and open his smock, she poured a green jelly-like substance on his lightly showing mound of a stomach and moved the transducer slowly over it. “Hm, everything looks good. Ten fingers, ten toes,” Randy got up and held Shay’s hand, kissing it on occasion. “Two arms, two…….hm.” Shay looked immediately at Randy who had a frown on his face. “Lets….try to find the heartbeat.” She moved the stick in her hand around and they all heard a low thumping noise. “There it is. Such a strong heartbe……” The doctor paused again with a “Hm.”

“What’s the matter?” Shay asked, worried.

“What are you not telling us?” Randy added.

“I…..I hear two heartbeats.” She stopped her moving of the transducer and looked at the dumbfounded couple. “Looks like you’re not having one baby but two babies. Congratulations.”

Shay’s mouth gaped open and Randy became as pale as the doctor’s lab coat.
