Chapter 17
Blaine reined his mount up short when an aristocratic town came into view. Old run down homes were littered here and there on the outskirts of the city where mansions, similar to Blaine's, just not as big, reined supreme. There was one building that topped them all. A mansion that Blaine's would have fit inside. Blaine pointed to it. "There lives one of the greatest vampires of all time. His alias is Turner. A name well earned seeing as how he turned both my brother and I. He's sired countless vampires and even a few incubi and succubi. He's a master." Blaine had a look of adoration in his eyes. Turner had always been the one man he had looked up to. A man with dignity and poise and unrivaled grace. Blaine turned to Novus. "Shall we proceed?"
Novus gazed at the large mansion with awe, his imagination running off on what Turner would look like. "Will I ever get to meet him...?" he asked curiously, ice-blue eyes glancing at his master. The light cast by the nearly-full moon made Novus's skin seem even more white and flawless than before, almost like a beautiful statue cast in marble.
Blaine smiled. ~God he's so beautiful...~ "Sure. Maybe we'll run into him tonight. But first," he spurred his horse into a quick walk, "we need to feed. I'm sure you'll find some good blood and a good soul to swallow down." He smiled again, a carefree, genuine smile. It had been a long time since he'd been to this town. There had been many pleasant memories here. Ones like his learning of the vampire ways, roaming around aimlessly, even meeting his first love.
Novus snapped the reins and nudged into his horse's sides so he could follow Blaine like some night time phantom. Well, that's probably what he looked like to any normal human...A gorgeously pale ethereal being, atop a white horse. A smile graced his slightly blue lips at the mention of a good meal, and he spurred his horse further to ride alongside his master, his Lover.
Blaine rode into the town with ease, as if he owned the place. A few aristocratic women looked up at him and smiled in greeting. Blaine nodded and smiled back, as if he knew them. He rounded a corner and saw someone. "Hey!" He yelled out and waved. The man turned around. He had long, chesnut brown hair and deep gray eyes. He was an older vampire. "Well, Novus, looks like you get to meet Turner after all." Turner smiled and jogged up to meet them. "Blaine! It's been years! Oh, and this time, you have a young ... Diabolizer? Just what have you gotten yourself into this time?" Blaine chuckled and smiled at Novus.
Novus offered Turner a broad smile that lit up about as bright as the crecent moon itself. "Nice to meet you..." he began, bowing a little upon his horse. He would've dismounted, but Blaine didn't so he remained where he was. "My name is Novus. I was Turned not because Blaine offered it...but because I took it. We've been though some rough times..." Novus told Turner, frowning slightly.
Turner nodded. "I understand, Novus. What with the Prince's arrival, my own protege's quiet life has been turned upside down," he said, looking at Blaine. Blaine smiled. "More than just the Prince though, Turner. The Queen's even staying at my home. It's all quite...." he paused looking for the right word. Turner caught on and finished the sentence for him. "Overwhelming. But it's fine. For as long as you'd like you two are both welcome in my chateau. Speaking of which, I must be going. May the night bring you the blood of riches," he said with a smile and a wave and was gone in the blink of an eye. Blaine laughed, knowing no other vampire could do what he just did. "Turner knows how to shadow phase. He's the only vampire, besides the Queen that knows how to do it."
Novus blinked, Turner's sudden dissappearance unexpected. But he smiled a little and nodded as Blaine explained. "I will be able to do that, won't I...? I stuck my hand through a shadow before, you know....only just the other day," he told Blaine, looking proud of himself.
Blaine smiled at Novus. "With more time, you'll be able to disappear completely. It just takes practice." Blaine dismounted his horse and began to walk away from it. He gestured Novus to follow him. "The horses will answer to my call should we need them. They get a little frightened when they go deeper into the city."
Novus nodded, then dismounted. Before following Blaine however he hesitated, and faced the wall of a building that they stood near. The entire wall was immersed deep in shadow. The young one approached it and placed his hands on the wall, fingers splayed out upon the stone. His ice blue eyes stared forth, deeper and deeper until he was actually leaning forward without realizing it. His hands sunk into the shadow, and he fell forward with a small yelp and was gone completely.
Blaine turned around at the yelp and let out one of his own. "Novus!" He ran back to the wall and searched around, feeling for any sign of him. "Can you hear me???" Blaine's eyes were wide in panic. His hands ran over the wall frantically, desperately trying to find Novus.
Almost totally disoriented, it seemed to Novus to take ages before he fell out of the shadows and back into reality. He fell out of the shadows in between the branches of a nearby tree and landed on the flat of his back...not the most graceful moment. "Blaine!" he called out, sitting up but not doing much else for he was very dizzy. His hair was also quite tossled...that, combined with the frightened/excited look in his eyes making him seem wild.
Blaine's head whipped around to the sound of Novus's call. "Novus!" He ran off to the sound of Novus's voice and the smell he emanted. It didn't take him long to find the little one. "Novus? Are you alright, little one?"
"Oh, I think I am fine....just a bit disoriented..." Novus told Blaine. "I fell in...I was drawn in. The currents there are quick, and the path folded....like origami, Blaine, that's what the shadows are like, at least to me. In the real world, everything is a flat piece of paper...but the shadows is that paper, folded into a shape. So confusing..."he said, shaking his head some in attempt to clear it.
At this explanation, Blaine adopted a rather cute confused face. "Huh?" was his only reply. "I guess, I'd just have to... experience it..." He laughed at that notion. "Although, I doubt it would ever happen. Come on, little one, let's go feast." He held out his hand for Novus.
Novus gladly took Blaine's hand, a small smile gracing his face as he was reminded why they were here in the first place. "Yes...I would so love to feed with you, Blaine...at least, for blood, I would. But I would like to be alone when I take their souls..."
Blaine nodded. "Of course little one. Whatever you desire on this night." He began to lead him to the throng of the city, where many parties entertained many aristocrats. "Go, little one. Meander through the crowd. Use your skills of seduction to lure a meal. If you have trouble, I will not be far." With a smile, Blaine departed and was soon lost among the crowd, scouting out potential meals.
Novus nodded, smiling slightly at Blaine. Then he too was off, blending into the crowd well, but standing out like a sore thumb at the same time, if you knew what to look for.
He headed into one of the large houses that was currently hosting a party. He made small talk with the grown-ups there, before spotting a nice young lady of about 17 that he fancied. It was not difficult at all to lure her into once of the many empty guest bedrooms.
But of course, Blaine and Novus were not alone within this throng of people enjoying the nightlife during this warm night. A few, and only a few incubi creeped about, and young ones at that. None of them were over 50 years old, the youngest being the same age as Novus...just barely 16. He was decked out as the other young aristocratic men were however, and held a confident air about himself. He turned his gaze and locked his blue eyec on Blaine's from across the crowded street. His skin, fair...his face, shaped almost exactly like Novus's. His hair, the exact same platinum blond. It was a copy of Novus just about...only a bit more feminine, and still alive.
Blaine felt this gaze and looked around, trying to find the source of it. When he did, he was stunned. "Novus...? But... " ~Wait a minute... He looks like Novus, but... It's too far away to tell...~ Slowly he made his way towards the young demon. He took a sniff of the air, but there were too many women about and all of them were wearing various perfumes. It was impossible to discern one scent from another. Finally, he came to stand behind the Novus look-alike. "Excuse me, but... I must ask... do you know a young man by the name of Novus?" he asked politely.
"Mmmm...?" the pretty young man mumbled, the sound drawn-out a bit lazily, as if he were a bit drunk. "Why no, good sir, I do not..." he told the vampire, his words that of the upper class, but drawled a little by the presence of alcohol and the vibrance of life around them. He smiled warmly up at Blaine, shifting most of his weight onto one foot which caused his hips to tilt seductively. "Why? Are you looking for him.....? I could help you look...." the young demon suggested, stepping right up against Blaine as he swept his petite pink tongue over his own lips hungrily.
Blaine growled suddenly, completely perturbed by this one's actions. His lips separated in a snarl that showed his perfect fangs. "I have more important things to do on this night." Blaine began to back away. "If you wish to keep your pretty face, I suggest you do not provoke me, Blaine Freelos, any further." With that he was off.
His mood had changed completely. Instead of seducing a victim, he cloaked himself in stealth. It was not long before he picked a young girl of about 26, and had her in an alleyway, teeth deep into her neck. The poor girl never had a chance to scream.
The young man pouted at receiving such a rude reaction to his advances. Brushing off the vampire's threats as if they were butterflies caught in the wind, the demon follwed Blaine, keeping his eyes on him. Something about this man intrigued him so...and he felt as if he wanted him. He would get something out of this...something worth daydreaming about later when he was more sober. As the vampire sucked the life out of the woman the young man's eyes went wide as he watched, lips parting slightly with the horror/intrigue of it. He couldn't look away...he had seen ths before, but each time, he felt himself enthralled by it.
When the woman was just knocking on death's door, Blaine released her. He looked up, his mouth and chin soiled by her blood, giving him a fearsome appearance. He sniffed, controlled by the bloodlust, and looked over to the young demon. His lips curved in a dangerous smile. "A two-course meal... Dinner and an incubus for dessert..." Blaine started to make his way over to the incubus, much quicker than one would have thought he could move, and grabbed his hair on the back of his head, making the throat vulnerable.
The young demon gasped as his head was yanked back, blue eyes wide as they now gazed upwards. His smallish fingers gripped the front of Blaine's clothing and attempted to push him away, but of course....his meager strength was no match for the vampire's. The young demon whimpered after he discovered that the vampire's charms kept him from screaming.
Blaine growled suddenly, being in his feral state of mind, and released the demon. Not a split second later, Turner had the incubus by the throat and in the air. "You never, ever, provoke a vampire that is old enough to sire you. He could and would have killed you. I would have thought that living amongst us, you would have seen what the Bloodlust does to us." He dropped the young demon. "I do not expect an explanation. There is one that Blaine would not attack if provoked and that is his Novus.... You should meet him." Turner smiled at the thought. "You might just feel as if you were... staring into a mirror..." Turner shadowphased, allowing the shadows to swallow him up slowly.
This is what Turner did in his town. He kept the peace. Where Aydrien might rule his lands, Turner ruled his people, human, vampire, or demon, it mattered not. Turner watched out for all of them all the same. Under his watch, no human had died from a murder in 15 years, no vampire had died from starvation ever, and no incubus had been a vampire's dinner in well over 200 years.
The young man shook his head slightly after he landed on the ground on his rear. The fright brought on by the two angered vampires had cleared his head a little. "A mirror? Does he look like me?" he asked, speech still a little slurred. Then he studied the fallen woman Blaine had fed from, but not killed. "Are you going to finish her?" he asked, because if Turner wasn't, the demon wanted to take her soul for himself. He stood and brushed himself off, his ocean-blue eyes watching the vampire curiously.
Turner rose from the shadows and shook his head. "No, I won't take her life. That would mean death for me. She has but a few mouthfuls of blood left in her body. She is not long for this world. If you wish to take her soul, do it quickly." He turned to leave. "Keep your eye out for a young diabolizer with short hair, the exact same color as yours. His eyes are yours too." With that, he was gone.
The demon did as he was told, and took the woman right there on the floor of the alley way. He wrapped the shadows about them, so no one would see if they happened to peek down the dark corridor. It didn't take long before he took her soul, then hid her body in a trash bin.
He was back on the streets as he had been before, but was now keeping his eyes open for the one the vampire had said looked like him. He searched everywhere, and had hit a few parties before he stepped into a house Novus was currently occupying. The young man smiled as he spotted his mirror relaxing on a couch in the corner. By this time Novus had had a drink, and was a bit tipsy himself. His skin was creamy and his cheeks were flushed from the meal he had earlier, and from the excitement of the party.
The long-haired twin sat next to Novus on the couch and smiled warmly at him. "I am Shi. What is your name???" he asked, tilting his head. The other blinked, wondering if perhaps, he had had too much to drink? This Shi looked almost exactly like him! "I am Novus," he told the other, then offered a smile of his own. Shi bit his own lower lip as he continued smiling, his gaze roving over the other. Now Shi had always been something of a narcissist, and he simply could not help himself...he leaned forwards and planted a soft, sensual kiss upon Novus's lips. A few people nearby stared as Novus responded with a kiss of his own. Yeah...he was a bit drunk.
