Chapter 17

The door to Old Bill’s office was rarely closed. But when it was, the guys around the shop tried to keep their voices low and the sound of work steady. They’d timed the work on the Model T pickup perfectly. A week until Christmas and finishing the job was providing Joe Vic with a lively source of happiness.

Every so often when Joe Vic came up from under the hood, he could see Old Bill in the process of reading and signing various papers given to him by a starkly white haired older man, a business type—a lawyer probably, as Joe Vic had pegged him. It was easy to allow his mind to rest upon the workings of those two and not think of what was going on with Rue. After Quentin left, things between them had almost returned to normal. He was trying to not insert his foot into his mouth for the time being and really show Rue that he loved her. Everything had been fine, just fine until about a week ago. Her plans for her Louisiana infused Christmas was all she could talk about. Then, she just stopped. Not really stopped, her excitement was false. Something was bothering her, something terrible that penetrated to her very core. Whenever he asked about what was wrong, she said nothing, she put the blame on her hormones for making her so down.

As he watched the two men behind the glass door conclude their business, the thought stroke him to maybe buy Rue some flowers. He’d never done that before and the general consensus about girls and some guys was that flowers were always welcomed. The lawyer shook Old Bill’s hand while giving him a hopefully smile, more words were exchanged before the lawyer walked out of the office and Old Bill stood in the doorway viewing his work occurring in his shop.

Old Bill looked his way and whistled him over. “Joe Vic, a word,” he said.

Joe Vic dropped his tools into their appropriate shelves in the tool chest and wiped his hands of the excess grease. He tried to force his thoughts once again away from Rue. Deciding if things continued as they had, he’d ask Old Bill for advice. He might even get a couple of kicks and laughs out of the whole thing.

“Have a seat.” Old Bill shuffled the papers on his desk slowly before passing them over to Joe Vic. “I met with my lawyer today and made a couple of changes.”

“Yeah.”

“Yeah.” An old work worn finger pointed at the top page. “This one is title of ownership. It now includes your name next to mine.”

“I don’t know what to say.”

“Well, I told you what I was thinking and you proved to me that you could do it. Joe Vic, you’ve really pulled yourself together and I’m proud. I’m getting old--”

“What are you talking about ‘old’? Not you.”

They shared a laugh. “Yeah, I’m pretty much an old crow now, while you’re still a spring chicken. Before you tell me I’m not old again, I’ll beg to differ. My hands aren’t as steady and my damn back been acting up lately.” He stopped and really looked over at Joe Vic, who didn’t seem all that at ease with his promotion. “You know what I got Mary for Christmas our first year together?”

“What?”

“A toaster, because that’s all I could afford. You know what I got her this year?”

“Not a toaster.”

“Right. I got her, really us, a new RV.” I figure we’ll head out of the city and travel until we get sick of traveling then come home every once in a while.”

“Sounds nice.”

“Yeah. I’ll expect you to have something this good if not better when you’re my age.”

And Joe Vic believed he actually could and would.
