A Sad Day for the Oshidori Household
Mother and Father Oshidori sat in their kitchen with their two daughters, both girls looking terribly uncomfortable. Nakago was now in a holding cell in their hometown, he had been moved there while the family made their decision on what to do next. Kaori’s face still held the bruises of being beaten, and everyone knew she was sorer than she let on, while Yuki was still wearing a bandage over part of her head to keep from opening the wound that had to be stitched up. Apparently Nakago’s ring had hurt more than they had been aware.
Mother leaned against the counter and looked down at her two daughters while father sat at the table looking down at his hands. Their role had been reversed, but after his initial attack on his son, and nearly killing him, Father had lost the will to keep fighting. He was tired, and they had yet to hear the story of their children’s dealings with Nakago’s sudden turn from the good, yet vain, son, to a whoring man who was in to raping his sister’s.
“He never raped Yuki,” Kaori finally said, filling the void that had been left by the utter silence. “And, until the other night, he had never raped me either.” Honest sucked. She was squirming in her chair and sighing heavily. All eyes were on her. Yuki had nothing to say, she barely remembered the attack, she had only known that she wanted to save her older sister.
The parents were smart; they knew what Kaori was saying, butt they dragged the pain of it out. She had to clear her throat several times before she could actually convince herself to say the words. Even then it came out in a stutter. Yuki had to admit to herself that in all of her years she had never seen Kaori look so uncomfortable. The girl always seemed to calm and collected, and here she was squirming with distaste for the situation.
“Last summer, at the beach, Nakago and I fu… had sex,” Kaori said, less bluntly than she had intended. “It wasn’t something special, neither of us knew why we did it, and it didn’t happen again until a few months ago. Maybe it’s the summer heat.” No one laughed. Kaori squirmed, reminiscent of Fuji’s ever present squirm when she was faced with something she disliked. “So, we said some rude things to each other afterwards, and then we kind of… just got mad at one another. He seemed to… get jealous, and I wasn’t helping the situation. I think… he think he was hurting Yuki to get back at me.” She told her parents as much as she could without mentioning that she was a raging whore now because of it too. Yuki was so proud.
“What would posses you to do such a thing?” Mrs. Oshidori asked, throwing her hands down at her side. The anger was deep in her eyes, along with the confusion. “And with your brother? Kaori, what were the two of you thinking?”
“We weren’t, Mom, that’s the problem, isn’t it?” Kaori snapped, in no mood for a lecture. She had not been having an easy time of this either, and Yuki looked like she was ready to pass out. Why did they have to do this? Couldn’t they just leave it be? But they had to make a decision on where Nakago would go, and live with the decision. They also had to fake that Nakago had a rotten seed, could he be saved now?
Mrs. Oshidori had to think for a couple of moments. How did one react to this? Did any other families in the world go through this? What she had to realize was not just that Nakago may be a bad seed, but that her daughter, her precious Kaori, was in love with her brother. She could see it in the young girl’s grey eyes. Mrs. Oshidori had to turn away to not look into those eyes and see what she saw.
“Yuki,” Mr. Oshidori looked to his youngest tired, his green eyes tired, his face covered in lines that had not been there weeks ago. “Yuki,” he started again, his voice kinder. “What do you want to do? You are the one who has the most to lose. Kaori made her choice, and though I feel for you, before you give me that dirty look, you also are the ones who brought this on yourself. Yuki did nothing but be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Yuki, what would you have done?”
Yuki looked from face to face to face. She stared over at her sister the longest. Her sister shook her head softly. “Don’t do it for me, Yuki,” she said to her sister. “Do what you need.” It pained her heart to say it, and her whole body trembled. She wanted to cry, losing the one she loved the most.
Yuki looked down at the table, memorizing the carving in the wood. She lifted her hand up and ran her fingers over the carving. Everyone was patient, waiting for Yuki to make her decision. She could not think straight, but for some reason it was Fuji’s voice that shouted from her mouth. “I think he needs help,” she blurted out. “Having him to go jail, we would never see him even remotely normal again. But if he goes to one of those… you know, hospital things, than he might recover. Maybe we can go back to being… a family.”
Kaori sobbed. She could not take it. She ran out of the room and up to her own bedroom, slamming the door behind her. She wanted Nakago back, but she didn’t want him in jail. If it meant that she would have to watch him go to a hospital it would be perfect, all to get her big brother back again.
In the kitchen Yuki and her family came to a quiet agreement, and sadly went to the police station to tell them their decision.
