Chocolate

Chapter 17 – Chocolate

“Yuki… what are you doing?”

Yuki turned to face Fuji and gave her a warm smile, her feet swinging over the edge of the bridge, a chocolate melting in her mouth. The box of chocolates sat warmly in her lap, the heat of the sun melting them faster than she could eat them.

“I’m watching the filming,” Yuki said, pointing with a sugary finger to down below, where a camera crew surrounded four actors.

“How much can you see from up here?” Fuji asked, shading her eyes from the sun and straining to see down into the crowd. “And why are you all of the way up here, eating chocolate, and not down there?”

“Can’t you just go ‘hey, that looks like Yoko Kanno’ and scream like a girl for a moment?” Yuki asked, not in the least perturbed as she shoved another chocolate into her mouth.

“Is that Yoko Kanno?” Fuji leaned further over the railing, straining her eyes further to see the small cast that was gathered around one director, who looked a bit angry, even from the distance the girls were at.

“Nope,” Yuki said with a smile, “but at least you were a bit more interested when I said it.”

Fuji sighed and stood up straight beside Yuki, looking at the half eaten box of chocolates. She reached over and grabbed one, popping it into her mouth while Yuki gaped. She had it completely swallowed before the horrible taste overcame her taste buds. “That was disgusting,” she cried. “What in the world was that?”

“It’s called Discoveree, it is positively the worst chocolate ever, with the almonds and honey and fake chocolate, but I love this stuff.” Yuki popped another one of those… things, in her mouth while Fuji gagged and debated spitting, however that was very unladylike, so she just swallowed and wished for something to drink.

“Hey, there’s Shinwa!” Yuki cried. Suddenly she was standing on the edge of the bridge and waving her arms wildly.

“Yuki, stop that!” Fuji cried, grabbing the back of her friend’s shirt and pulling her violently back until both of her feet were planted on the bridge and not the cement railing. “You are such a dork, you nearly killed yourself. Besides, I’m sure the reason he gave you those chocolates was to shut you up.”

“How do you know he bought them for me and not some secret admirer I have?” Yuki asked, licking the tip of her fingers clean from all chocolate.

“That was awful nice of Shinwa,” Fuji laughed.

“Hey!” Yuki laughed, slapping her best friend’s arm playfully. “I could have a secret admirer!”

“You’re getting chocolate on my blouse!” Fuji cried, looking down the arm of the silk to see bright brown finger prints from her friend.

“You don’t even like that shirt, why are you wearing it?” Yuki asked, running her chocolatey fingers down the collar, giving it more stains than it had in the arms.

Fuji stepped back a bit and laughed. “Because I was supposed to go to my mother’s, and she loves this shirt, and now you have ruined it. You missed a spot.”

Yuki laughed and then her eyes turned lascivious. She reached out a chocolate covered hand and placed her hand directly on Fuji’s breast, leaving a handprint where she had touched her. Fuji pulled the blouse away slightly and laughed. “You have a pretty dainty hand to be any of the men I date.”

“Oh, there are ‘men’ now?” Yuki joked, nudging Fuji slightly.

Fuji rolled her eyes and wiped at the chocolate on her shirt, knowing she should have been more upset, and at the same time she should have been more lighthearted about it all. Every day she was reminded she was more and more like her mother, and every day she was reminded she was still a teenager. Which was she supposed to be? The adult that everyone supposed of her, or the girl she longed for secretly deep inside.

No, that girl had been left behind, broken forever, when Amatsu had left her. Good riddance to the child, she was happier as an adult.

Wasn’t she?

“Oh my God!” Yuki cried.

Fuji broke free of her reverie and looked in the direction Yuki was looking at, back down at Shinwa and the cast. Yuki was fuming so badly that Fuji could have sworn she saw a spurt of steam come out through her ears. “What’s wrong?” Fuji asked, her heart speeding up the pace in her chest.

“He’s kissing her!” Yuki pointed wildly.

Fuji looked down at the crowd of people and her eyes stopped right on Shinwa, his arms wrapped around the other woman, their mouths met intimately. “Damn, and I forgot my binoculars,” Fuji muttered.

“Fuji!” Yuki cried, looking at her friend in surprise. “Fuji… you are supposed to be supportive.”

“Yuki, it’s a movie,” Fuji pointed out. “He is being paid to kiss her. It’s not like they’re… oh my…”

“What?!” she screamed, looking back at the crowd.

“Nothing,” Fuji said innocently.

“That wasn’t funny.” Yuki slid down the wall of the bridge, leaning her chin on the edge.

“Can you see from that position?”

Yuki shook her head solemnly. “No, but I don’t want to see him kissing another woman.”

“Um, did you not ask him to let you come? He told you today would be a bad day.”

Yuki grumbled something about what a smart ass Fuji was that actually made her chuckle instead of growing angry with her friend.

Fuji leaned back against the railing, looking down at the small crowd. She noticed Shinwa look up, looking for Yuki. He spotted Fuji and waved his normal friendly wave. Fuji waved back, unable to stop herself from waving. Waves were almost as contagious as smiles. A person can not help herself.

“I’ll show him who the real woman is…” Yuki grumbled.

“Will you?” Fuji asked snidely. “From what you’ve told me, all you two have done is kiss.”

“Oooh, look who’s talking,” Yuki continued with her grumble. Yuki saw the anger flare in aquamarine eyes for a moment and Yuki bowed her head low. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that, oh great Fuji of the heavenly beauties!”

Fuji laughed and brushed it off. “You’re right, you know,” she said. “I guess I was just bored with Amatsu.” Lies, blatant lies, but she was going to protect herself from the pain that was still deep inside of her.

The two were silent for a moment and then Yuki perked up, looking down at the group happily. “I think they are going on lunch!” she cried happily. She turned to her friend and gave a wide smile. “Do you want to join us for lunch?”

Fuji shook her head politely. “No thank you,” she said quietly, “I am just making my rounds.”

Yuki nodded understandingly and waved so long to her friend, joining her boyfriend for lunch while Fuji continued her walk.
