Chapter 8D
Once I stepped out into the night, I took a moment to just look up at the stars and take a few deep breaths in. Usually on clear, breezy nights like this, the air smelled of the water and had a nice, fresh taste to it.
My nose wrinkled. Not tonight apparently. Something smelled off. Then my ears perked up and I realized there was a shuffling noise coming from the alley to the right of the building. The smokers milling about were hovering near the opening, murmuring in low voice to each other. What the hell?
I walked up and tried to move past them—and was bowled over by someone running toward the street. I slammed to the pavement beneath them and swore, immediately trying to shove them off me.
“Ferd? Ferd!” said a voice above me. The weight lifted and firm hands pulled me to my feet.
“Allister?”
He looked like hell- eyes wide and breathing hard- and there were unpleasant smells clinging to his clothing. “What’s wrong?” I asked.
His mouth opened and closed several times, but nothing came out. I’d never seen him at a loss for words. “Are you ok?” I asked, though I knew of course that he wasn’t. I just didn’t know what else to do.
“You-“ he finally sputtered. “You’re alright?”
“Me? Yeah. What-?” I glanced behind him as something clattered in the alleyway. The damn streetlights had burned out and you couldn’t see a thing down it, even with my better night vision.
“Don’t go down there!” Allister screeched. Yeah, screeched. This was a night of firsts.
“What is wrong with you?”
Someone gave a scream. Seemed that one of the smokers had investigated the alley, and it had not been pretty. The police were called. The alley was taped off. And we were all interviewed.
It was supposed to be individually, but Allister wouldn’t leave my side, but to the police’s annoyance.
It wasn’t until later that I found out why. The police wouldn’t say a thing that night, but in the morning when I woke up, with Allister curled around me, it got online and read the news.
There’d been an attack in the back of that alley. Cole was dead. I couldn’t believe it. My mother’s words came back to me: There’s something nasty snatching up furries!
Holy hell.
Things changed between Allister and I after that. We were both shell-shocked and he never let me out of his sight until the murderer- some sort of half-octo monster that looked to be straight from a horror film- was caught. And even after, there was a bond between us that couldn't be broken.
