I thought she’d passed out after the first minute while she stared at me, unblinking and unmoving.
“Amanda?” I touched her tentatively and she came back to life.
“When did she offer?” her voice was strained but controlled, her eyes narrowed.
“Umm,” I tried to remember, “I think it was the day I’d missed school…” she looked away, her face now a blank mask.
“Why didn’t you tell me before now?” her voice was even, but I could tell she was hurt, but she moved on before I could answer. “Are you going to go with her?” she turned her eyes to me and I could see both hurt and hope in them. “Please tell me you’re getting out of this hell hole.” now it was my turn to look away.
“I’m still not sure…I want to, for me… but my mom.”
“Your mom deserves what she gets for staying with a psychopath!” she cried making me jump. “You don’t have to suffer for her stubbornness!”
“But-”
“No but’s Samantha!” I cringed “Get out of this! I don’t care where you go so long as it’s better than here.” her eyes were pleading with me as her tone softened and she took my hand “Promise me you’ll get out of here soon. Please.”
‘I want to… so why shouldn’t I?’
‘Your mom can’t take all this abuse by herself.’
‘Then why does she stay?’
‘To change him. To help him.’
“You can’t change anyone who doesn’t want to change…” I raised my eyes to Amanda, “I’ll try. No promises…” she looked as though she wanted to say something else, but she resisted the temptation. I touched her hand and hoped for the best.

Saturday came and went and I made no progress in my quest to leave the house. I had actually started to risk more time around my parents to see whether it was worth it to stay…
By Sunday I had called Melinda, and started packing my bags. When my dad stepped out for something, I went to my parents room to see my mother sitting at her vanity mirror putting on makeup. She caught my reflection and her eyebrows creased. “Aren’t you getting ready?”
“For what?” I was now curious. I didn’t remember making any plans apart from leave.
“For the dinner we’re supposed to go to tonight.” ‘Oh that.’
“I don’t think I’ll be going unless Mel- Ms Thornrush is going.” I said slowly as I approached her. She turned to me with genuine curiosity on her face.
“Why would it depend on her for you to go?” she whispered, I think she was more afraid of hearing the answer than I was of giving it.
“I… don’t think I can stay here much longer…” I replied looking her in the eye, “She offered to take me in after she saw what dad did to me.” mom looked a bit pale as she avoided my gaze
“This is temporary?”
“I guess it depends on dad’s attitude…” I fidgeted now. “She’s going to be picking me up today… I’m sorry mom.” she sighed and turned back to the mirror
“I’m disappointed in you Samantha, but once you set your mind on something, it’s pointless to try and talk you out of it…” she applied more eyeliner “I just hope you know what you’re doing.” she shook her head and muttered something else I didn’t quite catch, and sparing one last glance at me she focused all her energy in her makeup and I small smile crept to my lips. I was going to be home-free, hopefully…
~~~~~~
Melinda came probably half an hour later and helped my finish pack the rest of my bags. She had a glow to her that I hadn’t seen in a while and I doubted she could stop smiling. When I asked her about it, she ignored me. The only time I froze was when I heard the front door open and slam shut.
“Did you tell that man?” she asked seriously, when danger had passed. It turned out to be Jacob in a foul mood.
“No, I told mom.” I answered, “She wouldn’t hit me and tell me no.” Melinda nodded at my wisdom and started moving my clothes and basic necessities with her to the car, while I followed with my art supplies and electronics. I looked back at the house I spent my childhood to now and felt a surge of relief at the prospect of not having to return…
The drive to Melinda’s took all of half an hour maybe. And when she pulled up to her house my jaw dropped. “You’re a teacher right?”
“Principal actually.” she laughed taking in my expression
“Why are you teaching?” her house was actually bigger than my parents, and I always thought I was well off, what with never needing anything major, except perhaps a less drunk father and a mother who could see when something was a loss cause. She laughed a musical laugh and got out and began taking my things out of the car. I followed her in a slight daze as she showed me to my room and then around the house. When we got to the kitchen I asked again “Why are you teaching?”
“I love imparting knowledge on young minds… am I supposed to need another reason?”
“Umm, with all this, yeah!” I motioned around the stainless steel kitchen, and beyond that to the dining room. “You could comfortably house fifteen people in here.”
“Maybe not comfortably…” her smile was beginning to get infectious. “But I’m glad you approve.” my smile came naturally
“I definitely approve. I doubt I’ll be spending much time in my room though.”
~~~~~~
Amanda cornered me at the most convenient time. At lunch in the bathroom, again. “Where are you now?” she demanded. I was confused for only a moment.
“You didn’t actually believe that I would be moving already did you?” I asked pulling the innocent routine.
“You would be one to tease.”
“Hark, who’s talking?” my smile came far too easily though, causing her to raise an eyebrow. “I’m living with Melinda now. I hope you’re hap-” my words were cut off by her enthusiastic mouth on mine. My eyes fluttered closed within moments as I relished the kiss. “I should do these things more often…” I said, a bit woozy after her attack causing her to giggle.
“I’m just happy you’re out of that mess.” I smiled and pulled her to me again.
“I think I can arrange a sleep over… me by you, because I don’t think you want to go to the home of your principal…” I let my voice trail off and she thought for a moment.
“Well depending on the results of our respective fields, we may just want to celebrate.” I let loose a giggle and she pulled back and put a hand on my forehead.
“I’m not going mad Amanda.” I said pulling her hand away from my forehead. “I’m happy.” she shook her head and followed me to the cafeteria.
~~~~~~
“Whoa! Who let the sunshine in?” Angeli commented raising her hands in front of her face as I sat down.
“I must admit though, it’s a pleasant change from your pained expressions.” Christopher stated not even looking up “You look like you’ve just been completely fucked to mind-blowing orgasmic proportions.”
“Sorry to disappoint Chris, but no. I was not fucked to oblivion yet.” I replied to blown up on happiness to blush. The three of them watched me, Amanda with a slight rouge on her cheeks.
“You really are happy!” I laughed at their shock.
“I am covered in chocolate covered happiness and if Cecilia comes to try and dampen my spirits I’ll knock her into last week.” the smile I had on my face suddenly took a creepy edge as I turned to see said Cecilia standing, not two feet from me, stock still. I turned back to them as though nothing had happened leaving Cecilia dumbfounded.
