Part II

HERE
The woman in her late thirties came outside and almost dropped on the bench. She pulled out a cigarette and was trying to light it, her fingers shaking, when someone muttered:
“Here…” and the yellow tongue of flame danced in front of her.
“Thank you,” she said quietly, dipped the tip of her cigarette into the fire, inhaled deeply, and finally looked up. “Hi, Jack…”
“Hi, Laura,” Jack sat next to her. He looked even more exhausted than she did. “How’s Michael?”
“Same,” she said shortly, her voice bordering on the edge of tears. “How’s Kristine?”
“Same,” he sighed and lit a cigarette for himself.
Laura twirled her Parliament in her fingers and smirked bitterly.
“You know,” she said finally. “I quit this almost fourteen years ago… Figured I wanted to live longer and healthier… Right now it doesn’t sound so appealing.”
“Michael is your only child, isn’t he?” Jack asked softly and she just nodded. “Yeah, same here…”
“God, Jack…” she took a nervous drag on her Parliament. “Gary told me that there is a chance that one of those days… I might have to make a choice…”
Jack blew smoke out of his mouth and closed his eyes.
“He said…” Laura continued in a colorless voice. “That I will have to…”
“Pull the plug,” Jack thought. Gary told him the same thing a couple of days ago. It’s been a month since both kids slipped into coma and there were no changes whatsoever.
“I know,” he said quietly and Laura fell silent.
“Jack…” she muttered finally. “I will never be able to do that… I told Gary… I don’t care about the money, I’ll work four jobs if I have to but… I will never be able to…” she started crying and Jack just stared at his hands.
“Me neither,” he said finally.
