Old trees. The scent of the forest. A chilly breeze rushing through the leaves.
Alavas took a deep breath in and exhaled slowly. He closed his eyes and listened to the million little noises of the forest. The rustle of the leaves, a small animal making its way on the dry forest floor, a bird singing, the call of a wolf, millions of little things that made his forest alive.
How long since he had run with the wolves?
The sun was warm on his skin and he stood, there, in the middle of a clearing, in the forest he liked so much. A small smile played on his lips and he opened his eyes to see five wolves making their way towards him.
One wolf seemed to lead the small pack, its fur as white as snow and fiery yellow eyes looking at Alavas intently. Not making a sound or moving in the slightest way, Alavas looked back, gaze as intent as the beast’s. He knew the other wolves were slowly circling him, but that was not important.
Five minutes passed, then ten as Alavas slowly lost track of time. It wasn’t relevant since time flowed differently here, in the Dreaming World, in the world of the Wolves. After what would seem like a small eternity to anyone but him, Alavas saw the wolf shake it’s nuzzle without breaking their eye contact. Alavas smiled warmly and as one they walked to one another.
When only five feet remained between them, Alavas stopped as did the wolf. Slowly, he sat on the grass, crossed legs. Inside his head, his Nama stirred but didn’t say anything. This little ritual was always necessary and Alavas was used to it by now. He had learned the hard way how to deal with the wolves even if they seemed to take a liking of him since the beginning. Finally, the wolf spoke, his features not giving away that he was the one speaking, but then again, this was his world, and the words came directly from his mind to that of Alavas.
‘Lots of moons have passed since you last showed your teeth young one.’
‘Lots of things happened since that time, old friend.’
‘Lots indeed, does your angel still run?’
Smiling at the nickname the wolves used for his lifepartner and the way his old friend spoke, Alavas answered:
‘My angel is well, thank you. But I suppose you didn’t show yourself just to inquire about him. How is the elfin world going?’
‘The crows are not far I fear. ‘
Surprised Alavas looked at the wolf but his tone had been serious and Alavas felt his stomach tighten. That meant something bad had happened. The wolf would never have never said that to him if the bad news didn’t concern him.
‘What are the crows looking at?’
‘Two lost souls.’
‘Anybody I know?’
A sad tint passed in the yellow eyes before the old wolf nodded.
Knowing the wolf would not say more for the moment, Alavas closed his eyes and opened his Mind. He felt every living soul within the perimeter from the smallest bacteria to the biggest bear or the last dragons. His mind was overflowed with too much information but he was used to it. It always made him feel alive and oddly calm. The world was so beautiful, life was so beautiful.
Slowly, almost painfully, he started to sort out the load of information. Every soul looked like a small ball of power, each a different colour and feel. He could feel other elfs now, some in small groups, some alone, some blurry from being in the real world. He was floating between them, looking for familiar souls. After hours passed, he finally found what he was looking for, a soul with the desired signature. Seleno. But the soul was pulsing and as Alavas stopped near it to examine it; it seemed to pale and sorrow gripped his heart like a vice.
Silent tears ran down his cheek and for a moment his control over his Mind wavered. Taking a deep breath, he exhaled slowly and touched the small ball with the tips of his fingers. The deep green of Seleno’s soul suddenly cleared and Alavas looked at the old wolf behind him questioningly. But the pack leader looked away then back at him again. That was a no.
Carefully he took his fingertips away. What could have happened to have Seleno’s soul in such a state? Alavas was beginning to expect the worst. Where was his brother’s soul?
As if reading his mind, and that was probably the case here (Yay wolves rules!), the yellow-eyed beast asked him to come to him.
Quietly, Alavas did as he was told. Stopping 5 feet from him, he looked at his old friend, and blinked.
One second there was a wolf in front of him, the next an elf, yellow eyes staring at him and a light mocking grin on a handsome, if old, face. He had just surprised him and he knew it. It surely was the first time in the 100 years he had known the wolf that he saw anything like that. Damn, he tended to forget a lot of things were possible in the world of dreams.
The old wolf took graceful small steps to him and once close enough extended a hand and touched one of Alavas’ cheeks.
Light. Searing white light.
Seleno’s face smiling tiredly and seemingly a little anxious.
“This information is really important Shusui, if they find how to translate it, our people will be in danger.”
“Don’t worry love, I will get it back.”
A frown.
“Please be careful we can’t get you backup without being noticed. I have a bad feeling about this.”
“Mmmh don’t worry I will always come back to you, you know that. See you in a few days!”
Searing white light again. His eyes hurt.
Pain, pain in his tight, pain in his shoulder, pain in his head.
A group of dark blue clothed men was surrounding him, he was trapped. His senses were starting to dull and he fought to keep his consciousness.
Another needle got him in his back.
Everything went black.
Searing white light again.
Alavas slowly came back to his senses. He was on his knees, a hand on the ground, the other clutching his head. He had a horrible headache, but his heart now hurt a lot more. Shusui… His little brother had been captured…
He now understood why his best friend, if he could still call him that, was in such a desperate state. That was bad.
And he couldn’t do anything to make it right. He was in no position to. He couldn’t go back or he would have to leave Tansa. If he went back to his people to be able to help hs brother, he could be sure they wouldn’t let him go back to Tansa after that. Not easily anyway.
Oh for Atna’s sake! Why his brother?!
Closing his eyes, he emptied his mind and tried to calm down. He had to think.
He would go back to Tansa. They would figure it out. Somehow. They would.
He had to see his angel, he just couldn’t calm down.
Standing up, he turned to face the wolf and saw him nod a goodbye then disappear with a “Farewell protector!”.
Protector. He was now beginning to understand the nickname. He was always the one helping others and protecting them. But who would protect him?

Okay, I'm sure I confused more than one with my dreaming world... yeah I knew it. Well it will be explained in later chapters but you are welcomed to tell me what bugs you,...
So? liked it? Did not like it? Bof? Sorry it took so long but my story got hidden because my disclaimer was not good.
Please review.
