"Come on guys. If we don't hurry we'll never make it back on time." Corey told the other vampires. The newborns had wanted to stay out an enjoy the night before they had to return. Corey was proud of them. Even though they were all close to just six months old, Dennis, Whitney, and Ethan were almost weened off human blood. They had been more than eager to give it up. Which was surprising, but he wasn't going to complain about it. The fewer amount of vampires that fed off humans the better. Edward and Jaicyn had a good system and he wanted to uphold that system. Which is why he had became a sponsor.
"We still have some time left. Almost an hour. Do we have to go back now?" Whitney asked him with hazel puppy dog eyes. Corey couldn't help but smile. Whitney had become to be like his little sister. A sister who he hadn't had in his human life. She also looked like she was twelve. Whitney had been born out of spite. Edward had taken care of the vampire who had made her. She was almost too young to be kept alive. Whitney was just this side of old enough. Another thing he liked about her was that her hair was violet. It had been dyed that way before she had died. Now, since her hair no longer grew, it would remain that color.
"You know we have to be back or Jaicyn will hung us down." he told her.
"Oh please, you only want to make a good impression on her because you like her." Whitney said. Matthew and Zach laughed behind him.
"Keep your mouths shut." Corey said trying to keep a smile off his face. It was true, he had feelings for Jaicyn ever since he had been introduced to her and Edward's kiss. His own kiss had been ripped apart two years earlier and Jaicyn had found him when he was just about to give it all up. She had taken him to her and Edward's home and since that day he hadn't left the kiss.
"Now don't be that way. You know that we only joke because we love you." Matthew said laughing.
"But not nearly as much as you love Jaicyn." Whitney said grinning.
"That's it," Corey said and moved for Whitney. She still wasn't used to how fast the older vampires could move and Corey grabbed her around the waist and flung her over his shoulder.
"Put me down!" she yelled through fits of laughter. She beat her hands against his back in protest. Whitney was strong for a newborn but she was no match for Corey. He did have almost a hundred years on her.
"Alright, how about half an hour longer then we head for home? Fair enough?" Corey asked. Matthew and Zach nodded.
"Thanks, Corey." Ethan said. He was five months and going on strong. He was a blond haired, brown eyed vamp that could make any head turn. He had a certain charm about him that made everyone like him.
Dennis on the other hand was more cautious, less talkative but when he did finally open his mouth everyone listened. What he had to say was always important, always had a reason behind it. He was a mystery to everyone, especially Edward. Not many people could intrigue Edward like that. Once you caught his attention, you held it. It wasn't even a physical attraction that made Dennis so attractive, but it was his personality that made you interested in him.
Corey put Whitney down on her feet. "So what would the three of you like to do?" he asked. The three looked at each other and grinned.
"Roof jumping." Ethan and Whitney said together. Dennis nodded.
"Of course you want to go roof jumping. It's the new American past time." Zach said rolling his eyes. "Well, get up there." he told them pointing up. The three young ones jumped straight up and all landed on the roof of a nearby house. The sponsors followed. It went two by two. A newborn and sponsor jumped one roof and then next group went after them. They had been jumping for maybe ten minutes when they first smelled them. Each group were on different houses. Luckily for them they were all empty. Corey grabbed Whitney and moved in front of her. She kept her hands securely on his arms. Ahead of him he could see Zach and Dennis then Matthew and Ethan. All had stopped.
"What is it?" Whitney asked. Corey remained motionless.
"Can't you smell them?" Whitney sniffed at the air. Her fangs grew and her eyes turned bright green.
"Animals." she whispered.
"Calm yourself. They may just be passing." On the other house Zach wasn't moving either. The animals were getting closer and Corey wasn't comfortable any longer. "No matter what happens. I do not want you to join what ever goes on here. Get the others and run as fast as you can back to the house. Do you understand me?"
"Corey,"
"No. There is no debating. You will do this. It is not your fight."
"Alright." she said weakly. Corey pulled her around him and put his hands on her shoulders.
"Run." He shoved her forward and she ran and leaped to the next house. She grabbed Dennis' arm and pulled him with her. When they reached Ethan, both Whitney and Dennis grabbed him and pulled him down off the house.
Matthew and Zach made their way to Corey. "That girl can run fast."
"I hope she can run fast enough." Corey said as he watched them disappear.
Ethan stopped running. "What's the matter? Don't stop running." Whitney told him. She pulled on his arm but he didn't budge. He had an almost panicked look on his face. "What is it?" She asked.
"Blood." Dennis said. Whitney turned to look at him. This was the first time he had spoken in days. "The smell is everywhere."
"I don't smell anything." Whitney told him frustrated. Then it hit her. But it didn't smell like blood. It was more musty. "I smell snakes." Ethan took a step forward.
"No." Dennis said firmly moving in front of him. "It's a trap and we all know it." Howls and screams filled the air. They were suddenly surrounded by animals.
"They didn't tell me there was going to be a little pretty thing here." One of them said to Whitney. Dennis turned around and stepped in front of her.
"Touch her and it will be the last thing you ever do." he warned. The animals all laughed. And all at once they swarmed in on the three.
At first they were doing fine. Throwing animal after animal off of them. Ethan was just glad that they weren't in animal form. One of them got behind Whitney and grabbed her around the waist. "Dennis!" she screamed.
"Whitney!" he called back. The animals fell on him. He was in such a rage that it took five of them to get him down. They started beating on him and pulling chunks of flesh out.
"No!" Whitney shrieked. She was fighting with all she had but couldn't loosen the grip that held her. She couldn't see Ethan anymore. He was covered in so many animals. Dennis was laying motionless. One of the animals picked him up and slung him over his shoulder. Dennis was bleeding everywhere. Someone walked up to Whitney and slammed his fist into the side of her face. It phased her but she didn't go down. She could faintly hear screaming around her. The man in front of her was thrown to the side. Ethan was attacking everything he could see. The animal holding Whitney dropped her to the ground.
He went over and turned Ethan around so suddenly that the he almost stumbled. In one fluid motion Ethan's throat was ripped out. "Ethan!" Whitney screamed. Ethan collapsed to the ground. Blood poured from the hole in his neck. The pain was enormous. He rolled onto his stomach and tried to crawl for Whitney. The last thing he wanted was for her to be taken with them.
The animal grabbed Whitney's ankles and drug her on the ground and away from Ethan. Whitney screamed and dug her nails into the tar of the road. "Corey!" She cried out. She knew that he would hear her, no matter how far apart they were.
Corey was in the middle of avoiding being thrown through the roof when he heard Whitney scream. It pounded through his head and his guard went down. Seth grabbed Corey's throat, lifted him into the air and threw him onto the roof. The supports gave and Corey went through. Seth jumped down to the floor below.
Matthew and Zach were trying to peel shifters off of them. There was so many of them. Zach could tell just by their scent that they didn't belong to the local pack and pard. Animal after animal kept falling on top of them. The vampires fought them off using all their strength. Punching, kicking, throwing and biting. Anything.
"Bring them out!" one of the shifters shouted. On the ground, the remaining shifters pulled out crosses and threw them on the roof. Zach and Matthew pulled back from the crosses and shifters. The crosses were glowing white hot. They held their hands in front of their eyes. Behind them, more shifters jumped on the roof. They came up behind the vampires and shoved their fists into their backs and began ripping out anything that they could get their hands on. Matthew and Zach collapsed to the roof and landed on the crosses. They began to glow even brighter, burning then through their clothes.
Corey came to his feet in the house. He was covered in bits of the ceiling. "Did you really thing that you all could get away?" Seth asked grinning.
"You might take me and others, but you won't get the younger ones." Corey said hoping beyond hope that Whitney hadn't been calling for help.
"That's where you're wrong. I already have them. You have failed in your attempt to keep them safe. And believe me, I will cause them so much pain that you will be able to feel it yourself. You have no idea what I'll do to the girl." Seth told him. Corey was furious. He rushed Seth and grabbed his shoulders. Seth took hold of Corey's arms and used his momentum to shove Corey through a nearby window. He flew through the air and finally hit the ground. It took him a few seconds to regain enough to stand back up.
A hot, piercing pain erupted in his chest. A thin, metal arrow was protruding through his flesh. It felt like acid was tearing away at his insides. The arrow had been dipped in holy water. Corey fell to his knees. It hurt too much to even scream. He gasped for air as the pain sped through his body. Seth stalked towards Corey, blood spilling from the vampire's mouth.
"You're mine now, bloodsucker." he whispered. He round house kicked Corey in the face and he flew back. "Get him up. We have things to do."
Corey was the last one to wake up. His eyes automatically adjusted to the darkness of the room. He sat up slowly and surveyed the room. There were no windows. The floor was no more than dirt but all the walls were made of steel. If he wanted out of this room it would take a lot of banging around. He was almost certain that it would be more than one layer thick. Many more if it was to hold in a vampire.
"Corey?" he heard a faint voice. He turned to find Dennis curled up in the corner with Whitney in his arms. He had a death grip on her. "She's been in and out of it the last half hour." Corey crawled over to them.
"What time is it?' Corey asked. Dennis shrugged.
"At least an hour has passed. Four, maybe four-thirty." Corey reached out to brush back some of Whitney's hair but Dennis pulled back away from him.
"I'm not going to hurt her, Dennis." Corey told him. Dennis stared at Corey unyeilding. "What did they do to you?" he asked concerned and angrily.
"I do not know what they have done to the others. I have only heard their screams. They have done very little to me. I make them uneasy. None of them want to harm me. Even their leader is nervous around me." Corey listened and had a good idea why they weren't touching him. But he would talk to him about that later once they were free. If it happened.
"And Whitney?" Corey prompted. Dennis looked down at her for a moment.
"They made me watch what they did to her. It was my torture just as it was hers. Each of them took their turns with her. Over and over again and I couldn't stop them. She kept screaming for me and screaming for you. The only ones she trusted couldn't help her." Dennis wasn't looking at anything now. He was locked into his memory. "Then they hurt her with anything sharp they could find. There was blood everywhere. I wanted so badly to stop them. To rip them apart but they kept me back." Corey put a hand on his shoulder and Dennis jumped. Core was infuriated. He was going to tear those animals apart when he finally got in their presence.
"Let me see her." he said to Dennis. He reluctantly pried his hands away from her and gently passed her to Corey. He cradled Whitney in his arms. "Whitney. Whitney, wake up." he whispered. Her eyes fluttered momentarily and then slowly opened. She never had been able to ignore his voice.
"Corey?" she said furrowing her brows.
"Yeah, Red Lips, it's me." he told her with a smile. She broke down into ragging sobs. She wrapped her arms around his neck and held on. "Shhh, it's alright." he said softly. He stroked the back of her head gently. With his other arm he pulled Dennis closer to them and embraced him as well. It wasn't only Whitney that needed comforted. Corey didn't know how long he sat there and held them but Whitney's tears eventually subsided.
"I don't want to go to sleep, Corey." Whitney whimpered.
"I won't let you, either of you. When the dawn rises you won't be tied to her, not this day." Corey told her.
"Is that even possible?" Dennis asked.
"It's a rare gift. To be able to stay awake during the day. But it comes with a price. It's very painful until the night emerges. You need to know that before you make your decision."
"I don't care how much it hurts. Please, I don't want to be at their mercy while I'm sleeping." Whitney told him.
"Me either." Dennis agreed. Corey nodded. He leaned forward and gently kissed their foreheads. At first nothing changed but it didn't take long for an effect. It felt like tiny pins were pricking at their forehead. Whitney scratched at her head. The pricks grew more sharp, piercing down into their muscles in a cold wave. Dennis could feel the pricks inside of him, attacking his organs and flowing through his veins. His hands convulsed and his body writhed in pain. Whitney had her eyes closed tight and she dug her fingers into Corey's arm. She whimpered and tried not to let the pain take control of her. A blanket of freezing cold pain pricks coursed through her like fire.
"It won't get any easies, I'm sorry for that." Corey said. He leaned against the wall and held out his hands. Dennis and Whitney reached out for him but even that small movement caused them agony. Corey pulled each of them under his arms. They clung to him afraid of actually staying awake during the day. Corey closed his eyes. He knew that they were going to become angry with him once they realized what was really happening. He could keep himself during the day with no problem. But in order to keep others awake required him to send that gift temporarily to that person. Which meant Corey would be the only one sleeping. At least in a sense. He would still be breathing but he would sink into an unconsciousness that was very difficult to come back from. He only wished that he would be able to be there when they needed him.
