Epilogue

A/N: So here's the epilogue. After reading it, you should be able to figure out who Jacy will be paired with in my final North Mission series. And I'll be up front with you...you'll either love it or hate it (the pairing, I mean). In any case, enjoy, and I hope you'll give the final story a chance. It's pretty good, I promise.

Epilogue

“Go Jason!” The girls were screaming from the stands. Joe was seated nervously at the sidelines. The defense had done their part; it was now up to the offense during the final drive of the game to score. The Hawks were down by four points, it was already third down, and there were only fourteen seconds left in the game. The only way they’d win would be with a touchdown.

Despite being unable to play, Ryan’s heart was still beating fast for his team. He was seated in the stands of University of Phoenix Stadium, where the BCS game had been played many times. Lani was seated next to him, clutching his hand tightly. Yes, despite being unable to play, Ryan Mackey was still a happy man.

The players broke into formation at the line of scrimmage. Jason play-action faked to Roy Turner, the Hawks’ number-one go-to running back and hurled the ball off into the direction of Tristan Carter who had already managed to evade two of the blockers on the opposing team.

After successfully catching the ball, Tristan juked the Michigan cornerback with some impressive moves and moved right toward the edge of the goal. His panther-like grace allowed him to continue toeing the line just within bounds. Add that to his speed, and Michigan was toast.

The screams from the Hawks’ side of the bleachers were growing into a huge crescendo. Teammates and fans alike stood up in their seats as Tristan continued to evade blockers. Twenty…fifteen…ten…five…

Tristan practically dove over one final blocker before landing into the end zone. A whistle sounded as the game clock stopped. North Mission University had won the BCS Championship game thanks to a last-second touchdown by Tristan Carter.

Jason tore over to Carter and pulled him into a tight hug. More and more players began filing out into the field, running over to Tristan and congratulating him. It was utter chaos out on the field, but it was the good kind of chaos that accompanied someone who was finally getting their fifteen minutes.

And yet…Tristan didn’t really feel like celebrating at all.

Jacy had cheered for the Hawks after their win, even if the winning touchdown had been gotten by Tristan Carter. She was cheering for Jason and Joe and, yes…even Ryan. But Tristan would not be in her thoughts when she celebrated.

Jacy had been unable to go with the group to Arizona for the game because her mother had collapsed at work that morning when Jacy was scheduled to leave. Jacy was currently sitting in the hospital waiting room with her younger sisters, Paige and Roxanne, who were already asleep.

It seemed as if every news station wanted a chat with the blonde Adonis from Trinity Falls, Texas. Jacy had wanted to shut the television off. Unfortunately, she did not control the hospital televisions; although she wished she did.

As Tristan talked in one interview after another, Jacy realized that something had changed though. Something was askew in the universe. When a pretty interviewer began asking Tristan questions, he didn’t flirt with her as was characteristic with guys of his ilk. Tristan approached each and every interview with professionalism and seriousness, which was odd, considering the landmark achievement that had just befallen him.

That devilish glint didn’t flash in Tristan’s eyes – not as brightly as it normally did. In fact, Tristan looked mostly weary and sort of…sad.

No, Jacy thought to herself, shaking her head. Remember, Tristan Carter does not possess human emotions.

“Who’s the hottie?” Paige asked sleepily, as she sat up in her chair and squinted an eye at the television screen.

“Go back to sleep,” Jacy responded. Paige happily complied. As Jacy slowly turned back to the television, she thought about how much she had changed in the past few months – not just physically, but emotionally as well. She hoped it might spell out success for her. She was tired of being without someone to hold her and protect her. She desperately wanted to fall in love like all her friends had. Jacy didn’t know where or when it would happen…

But she hoped it was soon.

A/N: Go ahead...hate me. Stay tuned for Tristan and Jacy's story!
