Sara’s stomach heaved, and she gripped edges of the toilet as yesterday’s dinner made a reappearance. She leaned her head against the edge, grateful for the coolness of the plastic. Aoi and Kenji weren’t stirring, and she was grateful she hadn’t disturbed them. What a rotten thing - a week before graduation and she was becoming ill. This was the last thing that Sara needed right now.
The clock in her bedroom flashed 3:20 a.m. Sara groaned and curled up in a ball, wishing the sudden nausea would pass. It had done this to her twice now - waking her from a dead sleep with only seconds to make it to the bathroom. She considered waking Osamu, knowing he would give up his sleep time to talk with her. . But with the little schooling they had left of their high school career, Osamu had been swamped the past few weeks.
It seemed as if the trip to the States had done wonders for Ken and Osamu. Two months had passed since the blow up fight, and the two were on speaking terms once again. Everyone’s nerves were still on the edge, but at least the two didn’t give death glares as they passed. Ken even asked Osamu for help studying the night before. It had been a major breakthrough, and for the first time in a while, Sara witnessed Shin give a small smile toward his children.
Sara finally decided Osamu had been asleep long enough. She felt around for her phone, and hit the speed-dial. A few seconds later, Osamu’s sleepy voice filtered through the phone.
“Yea?”
“I think I’m dying.” Sara groaned, curling up into and even smaller ball.
Osamu grumbled something in reply. A moment later he cleared his throat and sounded a little more awake. “Why do you think you’re dying?”
“I’ve been throwing up all morning. I did this yesterday too.”
He snorted. “Throwing up doesn’t mean that you’re dying. It means you are sick. Has anyone in your house been ill? I know Ken was last week, but he has allergies, and he wasn’t throwing up . . Maybe you caught it from Yukio? He was out most of last week with the flu. You should stay home today from school, and rest. That way, you will be rested for graduation this Saturday.”
“It’s the last week of school,” Sara frowned, although Osamu couldn’t see her. “I have no business skipping during the last week of school. I never have before, and I don’t intend to start. Besides, it went away yesterday . . .”
Osamu yawned, and Sara once again felt guilty for waking him up so early. “Tell you what,” he decided. “I will call Tani around seven, and have her bring over your work for the day. She can stay over at your apartment while you’re there, keep you company and things. . .”
“Your suggesting I play hookey?”
“Sure. Wouldn’t hurt anything. You’ve basically already finished with school.”
Sara blinked. “You. Ichijouji Osamu. Genius of Japan just suggested I skip school?”
“You only live once, right? Besides, you’re throwing up, and if they catch you doing that during school, you’ll be sent home anyway. School policy. So either stay home willingly, or be prepared to bug someone to come pick you up. I did this two years ago - they won’t kill you. I promise.”
It took him the next few minutes to convince her that everything was going to be okay. Eventually, Sara was too tired to argue with him, knowing that he would win one way or another. She flipped off her phone and snuggled under the covers, wishing her stomach would settle once again.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tani arrived at the apartment around eight. Sara stumbled out of bed to let her in, then promptly returned to the couch. Her entire body ached. The older woman raised an eyebrow, and laid Sara’s homework and study sheets on the table. “How are you feeling?”
“Horrible. . .although it seems to be getting better. I’ve been sick all night long. It’s odd. It comes and goes. Usually in the middle of the night though. Or early morning.”
A frown crossed Tani’s face. “Early mornings?” At Sara’s nod, her brow furrowed. “Do you think you would be able to keep down some rice if I cook it for you?”
The mere thought of food sent Sara’s stomach churning again, but she wasn’t going to turn down Tani’s hospitality. She settled herself into a ball and pulled a blanket over her head. A few minutes later, she could smell the rice, and heard as Tani entered the living room once again. She smiled and placed a bowl in front of Sara. “Eat it when you feel better.”
Tani sat on the other side of the couch with her bowl of rice and settled her legs underneath her. “Can I ask you something?”
“Of course.”
Tani was silent for a few minutes, before sighing and setting her food on the coffee table. “I want to tell you something, and I’m going to pray that you are not offended by it. But listening to you tell your symptoms reminded me of something I went through once. . And I’m wondering if it isn’t the same thing.”
“Go on,” Sara urged her.
“I don’t know how much Osamu has told you . . Probably not much. I’m probably not someone who you would want to know too much about,” She smiled sheepishly, and shrugged. “But when I was nineteen, I was in a really, really bad car accident. Long story short, as a result of the injuries from the accident, I am no longer able to have kids. Something internal injuries or whatever. To be honest, I don’t understand it too much. But I digress.
“ What I am about to tell you is something that no one but Osamu knows about. Not even my parents. About three months before I had my accident, I started having almost the exact same symptoms that you are. I was getting sick in the early part of morning, or after I would eat. Certain smells would even trigger me. My face began to break out . . Silly stuff that a nineteen year old girl wouldn’t really ever think about it being wrong.”
Sara’s stomach tensed. “So . . What was wrong?”
“I was pregnant.”
The older woman seemed to notice Sara’s confusion, and answered her question before Sara even had time to ask it. “Just to let you know, it wasn’t Osamu’s. What happened between Osamu and I didn’t last very long and had ended far before that. I told him because I knew he was the only person I could trust not to spazz out on me when I told him. He didn’t. He helped me through a rough time. Needless to say, after I had my accident, I lost my baby.” Tani’s face looked sad, and she shrugged, her eyes moving to her food. “I’m simply telling you this because the symptoms that you are describing to me. . . Well, they’re almost exactly the ones that I had.”
Instinctively, Sara’s hand went to her abdomen. Tani gave her a small smile. “I’m not naïve, Sara. I’ve been in love once too - It’s no secret to me that you’re sleeping together.”
Sara felt her cheeks heat at the blood rushed to them in a blush. Tani continued.
“It’s at least worth checking out. Even with protection well. . Things don’t always go as we plan them, do they? If you’re worried about being recognized, I can buy one for you.”
Pregnant. In all the possibilities that had run through Sara’s mind, pregnancy had been the last among them. It was a naïve and childish thought, but she had never considered it. It did make sense though - the timing. Sara swallowed and her stomach churned again.
Tani stared at her curiously. “Are you okay?”
“Oh God . .” Sara muttered. “Tani, what if I really am?”
“Well . . Then you deal with it.”
Sara wasn’t listening. Her nerves were in panic mode. “I can’t have a baby, Tani. I’m barely eighteen, I haven’t graduated yet. I’m not married, and Osamu.. . Oh Lord, how would I tell Osamu?”
“Sara,” Tani leaned forward and placed a hand on her shoulder. “First of all, calm down for a moment. You don’t know that you are yet. And even if you are. . I hate to sound motherly, but you know the consequences. You knew that when you chose to take that step, this could possibly be an outcome. It’s a hard lesson to learn. I had to learn it the very hard way.
“You have one advantage over myself. You have Osamu. You have a boy who won’t desert you the moment you give him the news.” Tani swallowed. “Mine did.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Osamu came over after school. Sara looked up from the study notes that Tani had brought her and grinned. He smiled back and brushed her hair out of her eyes and planted a kiss on her forehead. “How are you feeling.”
“Better.” Her conversation with Tani earlier in the afternoon had calmed her nerves. While she was still nervous, knowing that Tani had been n the same position once helped her identify with the older woman. Slowly, Sara took one of Osamu’s hands and stood, holding her breath.
“Osamu . . We need to talk.”

Author's Note: Wow . . this chapter came out totally different to how I was expecting it. This was supposed to include their graduation, but apparently my muses decided to take a different turn of events. Oh well - this needed to be brought in. So what do you guys think? (ones that haven't read this story before). Do you believe Sara is really pregnant? Either way this turns out, I assure you, it is extremely essential to the plot. Ones who know the ending to this story will realize what I'm saying. As this is drawing to a close, I'm becoming more and more nervous about ending this. I'm seriously terrified I'm going to lose all of you! But I will deal with that when it comes.
