Part 16
Inside the Haunted
Part 16
-------------------------------------------
Breaking free from my own body was hard. VERY hard. Emily and Charlie were both possessing me at the same time, and there was a very good risk that I could die. But I had to do it. I had to get out. But I don’t think it was working very well.
“Emily, I can’t do it. I just can’t break free from him.” I said inside my head so she could hear me.
“Madigan, you MUST try harder! He’ll end up killing us both and become immortal!” Emily said to me. I knew she was right and I was trying as hard as I could, but I just couldn’t break away from my body. It was nearly impossible. But then I thought of Emily and my parents being trapped here forever under Charlie’s command. Possessing people who came here, eager to fix the Seahawk and turn it in for profit would be moving targets aboard the ship, and no matter how much I would try to resist, I would be possessed by Charlie to kill the people. That would make him more immortal than ever, and he would never be able to be stopped. He would just keep living on, and I couldn’t let that happen.
---------------------------------------------
I fought back Charlie and Emily’s mind as much as I could to break free. I thought of everyone who had died on here: my crew, my parents, and Emily. I couldn’t let them down. They were all depending on me to stop Charlie in his evil tracks. Suddenly, the weirdest sensation came over my body. Charlie and Emily were gone, and so was I. As my spirit left my body, I felt like I was being squeezed through a tiny tube slowly and it sucked away my breath. Then, there was no more feeling that I had. There was no more thought or any pain. There wasn’t even anything left of me. I had died and moved on from my body. My soul came out of my body and the next thing I knew, I spiraled into inky black darkness to join my parents and Emily and everyone else that I knew that had moved on into Elsewhere.
--------------------------------------------
“Madigan, can you hear me?” I heard Emily’s distant voice in my mind, but her words didn’t register inside of my brain. Wait, I had a brain?! I thought I was dead! There it was, thoughts, feelings, I had them all. I was alive again!
“Emily?” I opened my eyes slowly to see her transparent body bent over mine, examining me closely.
“Madigan, I’m so proud of you! You did it!” Emily said.
“But Emily…I died. How am I back in this same body?” I asked. I thought I was dead, and none of this was making any sense at all.
“Well, I managed to hang onto your soul for one last second while pulling Charlie out. You almost didn’t make it…I was so afraid that you were gone forever…but here you are.” Emily said breathlessly.
“Well, thanks for saving my life…again.” I said, smiling.
“But…just make sure that doesn’t EVER happen to me again. I don’t ever want to feel that feeling ever again.” I said. Emily smiled at me.
“At least your death was quick. Mine was somewhat fast. I hardly had any time to think about what was going on and what was going to happen to me.” Emily said, a little sadly. I imagined Emily’s small neck inside of a tightly wrapped rope and being hung. As soon as the image came into my mind, I wished that it hadn’t.
“Hey Emily, where’s Charlie?” I suddenly asked.
--------------------------------------------------
Emily bit her lip and looked around.
“When I got him out of your body, he kicked me out of his and disappeared. I’m afraid I don’t know what has become of him for now.” She said. My hopes lifted the tiniest bit.
“Do you think he’s gone forever?” I asked hopefully. Emily shook her head.
“No. He’s still here somewhere, waiting for the perfect moment to kill you again.” Emily said. Somehow, her words were anything less than comforting.
“Well, it doesn’t matter. We need to make this ship disappear…we need to blow it up.” I said painfully, thinking about how much work we had put into it. Emily gasped behind me.
“Would that work?” she asked. I shrugged my shoulders.
“It might, but he needs to be in his human form. And I need some kind of explosives too.” I said, my mind reeling with a plan. Emily smiled behind me.
“I think I know where we could get some…” she said mischievously.
-------------------------------------------
Emily led me throughout the ship down all the way to the very bottom level.
“It’s really…um…damp down here.” I said, pulling my shirt over my nose. It smelled really nasty and it was cold and damp and moisture was all around us. There was even mold growing on some of the walls.
“Yes. It is. Quite dreadful, but it’s the perfect place where Charlie would keep all of his equipment. No one would ever step foot in here, so it would be the perfect place to store anything…illegal.” Emily said. I nodded. It would make sense to do so. We stepped inside a very dark room and it was very damp. The floor was so wet that when we stepped inside, the floor squished under my feet.
“How is this place so…wet?” I asked curiously. I was amazed that this ship was still together.
“Well, it has been sitting in the water for nearly…90 years or so? I’m not sure exactly, I’ve lost count, but this part of the ship is submerged very deep in the water, so naturally it would get the most water inside.” She said wisely.
-------------------------------------------------
I looked around, my eyes finally adjusted to the darkness and my mouth dropped open. There were so many torture items around here, some of them looking cruel beyond comfort. There were something’s inside that I had never even seen, doubtful if I’ve even heard of them. Emily finally located a box labeled “Explosive: Danger” and opened the box. She pulled out sticks of dynamite and held them up.
“Would this be enough?” she asked. It would be enough to blow up one part of the ship I guess, but not the whole thing.
“Grab the whole box. We’re going to need all of them.” I said, making up my mind. She gave me the box to hold and we walked out.
“Now, let’s go to the middle of the ship to set this up. Then we need to lure in the bait: Charlie.” I said.
