Ch. 16: "You Happened"
Part XVI: "You Happened"
Morning came. Early afternoon actually, not to put too fine a point on it.
Trey stirred first. He felt a tiny bit queasy and he had a dull headache; but nothing major however, all things considered.
As his eyes struggled open, Trey smiled. There was a gangly leg slung over his hips, a spider-thin arm draped lazily across his chest, and a head-full of soft, silken curls nested in his shoulder. He had a vague recollection that he'd phoned Jake, and that the man had come over to take care of Harley; the vomit portion of the evening's festivities that he simply couldn't handle.
Trey ran his hand up and down Harley's back, over top of the soft, over-sized t-shirt the boy was wearing.
Harley stretched - that lazy, sensual, feline series of movements that he did every morning that made Trey's heart leap and his cock twitch at the sight.
"'Morning, baby brother," Trey greeted softly.
"Eh," Harley groaned. Even on the best of days, Trey's younger brother was decidedly not a morning person. "'Morning, big brother."
"You feeling okay?" asked Trey.
Harley nodded. "Not too bad. I got really, really sick. Jake was here."
"I know," Trey smiled gently. "I called him."
"He held my hair back while I was throwing up. Then he gave me a bubble bath. Got me dressed."
"Nice choice," Trey replied, grinning and scanning Harley. "A t-shirt the size of a tent, and plaid boxers. You're just too fucking cute, you know that?"
"I know."
"He loves you a lot. You know that too, right?"
"I know."
"What happened, Harley? We've never really talked about it. You and Jake, I mean."
Harley sighed, running a hand over Trey's shoulder and resting his fingers on the man's neck. "It was a combination of things, I guess. I knew that he'd never give up his wife and his kids to be with me. Honestly, I don't think I could've handled it if he would have, so it's all for the better. And then of course, more importantly, there was the other... the other thing that happened..."
"What 'thing'?"
"You, Trey. You happened."
"I didn't mean to, Harley."
"I know."
"Then why? Why did it happen?"
Harley smiled fondly and hugged his brother closer to him. "I think the very fact that there's no logical reason for it is a very clear message that it's just supposed to be. It's kind of like the concept of God, in a way. We can't explain it, we can't rationalize it, we can't justify it, and we certainly can't defend it to people who believe in something else. But for us it simply exists. It simply is. Maybe we just have to accept that, and not try so hard to explain it."
"How'd you get so smart?" Trey asked lightly.
"Good genes," Harley grinned.
Trey rolled his eyes and chuckled. "That was bad."
"I know."
"'A heartless, cosmic soul-mate joke'?" Trey commented, using Harley's words.
"That's the only thing that I can figure makes sense," the boy shrugged in reply.
"Well," Trey grinned, "if they can't take a joke-"
"-fuck 'em," Harley finished with a giggle.
"I'd much rather fuck you."
"I know."
The Sheffield brothers smiled at each other and snuggled warmly into each other's arms. All was good with the world.
For now.
