15 Harri's New Life
Both Nesta and Joey felt more at ease than they had since their arrival. Their bellies swelled accordingly with the new life, but they were only intent on the one man in their far chamber.
Harri was becoming a madman. One the medics had stabilised him, weak as a new born with loss of blood, they had set about providing a personal blood bank for the unfortunate one. Every person in the castle, and some beyond, had been persuaded or coerced, bullied, into donating.
The few prisoners had been astonished to see Hadad keep his word to His Ladies, they were free to return as they would. Several Needlers had then requested to join the force. Unable to fight Hadad, they would fight with him to release their deep tensions. One solitary Falconii had joined them, he was the last of his family group and felt no longing to return to the high canopy. All these had donated before leaving, and the others still waited in the town that was now mainly filled with women and children. Flame’s companions could not bear to remain in the place where their friend had died in cruel agony and were the only ones to immediately return to the forest.
Once Harri had been given the all clear to rise again, he terrified those present by trying to pull himself out of the high window, tearing the great wound open again in the process. He was restrained. He raved at his bonds, cursing them all for keeping him alive. He was less than a man! What good could he be to any woman now?! He wanted dark oblivion!
Nesta and Joey stayed calm through the ravings and verbal abuse. They could expect no less from a man who no longer could consider himself a man. Gentle encouragement and kind words were all they could offer, but he finally acknowledged that THEY wanted him to stay in this world with them, regardless of what he thought. No, they would NOT let him up again until he gave his word of honour that he would not try something stupid again. As he finally subsided and was allowed up, the raving was replaced by a deep depression that would not lift.
Even the depression lifted in a hurry as Nesta felt birthing pains begin. Harri had run like a wild thing to the medical women, forgetting all else in his panic.
Nesta was delivered of a boy. Hadad would be SO pleased she mused. Joey sat with the new baby, her hand caressing the movement in her own belly. Not long now, she told the bump, you have a playmate waiting for you. Little Hesta (named with Hadad’s permission after her lost twin), was a besotted admirer of the tiny precious bundle. Nesta had a name in mind, but would not name little Adad before Hadad returned.
Harri found himself in the enviable new position of Head Steward with responsibility for the organisation of the castle staff. Helga, Head Housekeeper, took great pleasure in ‘her new trainee’ even though she was technically now second. There was little time for the depression, this new life was busy beyond any that Harri had known. But the ache would not go away.
The Animaii finally returned to the forest promising to visit or send news. Harri did not want to lose touch with the world outside Castle Had. And when Jacs returned? Well, they would see when and if that happened.
