Four Months Later
Lookin' damn good!
Johnny Shears strutted down the dusty front walkway. The brutal Arizona sun heated up his shaggy black hair, but he couldn't care less. He had better things to think about.
He trapped the paper bag he caried under his arm. He gave the screen door a lazy knock, and then he pulled it open and invited himself in. After a quick, straightening run of his fingers through his warmed hair, he strolled through the foyer. A couple quick glances in the living room and kitchen as he passed yeilded no results, but A faint tune tickled his ears from somewhere else within the house.
Sounded like some old dead lady - Peggy Lee or Rosemary Clooney maybe. He followed the music down the stairs to the basement, and sure enough, he found exactly who he was looking for.
His lips spread over his teeth in a broad grin. He stood at the bottom of the stairs a moment as he let his wayward gaze soak in the sight of that thin, frail body sitting cross-legged on the floor over a few thousand jigsaw puzzle pieces.
Jude's hair had grown out a little thicker. His pale flesh no longer had those rotting, putrid scabs. It was all smooth and scarred, and looking about a million times better than how they found him. And those green eyes... As vibrant and daring as ever. Johnny could stare at him for hours.
If only Jude would let him.
The green eyes locked on him from across the room. Jude raised one hand and pointed at the paper bag. "Give it to me."
"What, no 'hello, Johnny, you're looking mighty sexy today'?"
"Give."
Johnny laughed and wandered in. He gave the bag to the outstretched, demanding hand, and then dropped to sit on the floor beside the small figure. He watched Jude tear the paper bag to pieces. In no time, the glass canister within was completely exposed.
Jude stopped. His hand hovered over the lid of the canister, and then his tight lips turned down in a childish frown. "This isn't food. Where's the food?"
"When have I ever brought you food?" Johnny quirked a brow. Sounded like someone was getting spoiled with takeout. Not that he was surprised. He doubted Cain could tell a spatula from a fork. "Daisy sent it for you. It's a cream for your face. It'll help with the scars."
"Lame." Jude put it down and turned his attention back on the puzzle.
Johnny shrugged and ran a hand over the boy's new silky hair. He watched for any sign that the physical contact was unwelcome. Every now and then the little guy had days when he could fly off the handle and start breaking things at the drop of a hat. That'd be all fine and good, if only Johnny could tell when it was one of those days.
He slid his hand over the shoulderblades and down the prominent spine. He snuck his fingers beneath the loose fabric of Jude's T-shirt and explored the scarred flesh within. "Where's Cain?"
Jude fit two pieces together and placed them aside with the other pairs and trios of fit pieces. "He's flirting with one of the landscapers in the backyard."
Typical. "What about Stiles?"
"Out buying a shotgun to scare the landscapers off."
Cute. It didn't even bother him anymore that Cain and Stiles had hooked up and moved in together. Seemed a little premature - they'd only known each other a little over four months, but it wasn't his problem. If his cousin was happy, that was all that mattered. That and the other piece of tail Johnny had his sights set on.
"So..." Johnny leaned in. "That means we're all alone?"
Jude turned his head slowly towards Johnny. His lips quirked in a faint smirk. He closed the distance between them and pressed his dry, scarred lips to Johnny's cheek. "We don't have long. They're taking me to my psychiatrist in an hour because Stiles thinks I need stronger medication."
Johnny gently entwined his fingers within the silky strands and claimed those scarred lips with his own. A small, wet tongue slipped into his mouth along with the faint taste of Aquafresh toothepaste.
When their mouths reluctantly pried apart, Jude let out a quiet, relaxed giggle. He murmured, "Let's make the best of it." He took Johnny's hand, and then climbed to his feet. "C'mon. I mixed up some blue dye that we can put in Cain's shampoo."
Johnny put his free hand over his heart. "I knew there was something I loved about you."
