Chapter 15
“Ki-ah!”
“Good, Jim. Go back to move 22A and finish again from there.”
“Yes ma’am.”
I’m teaching the Thursday night adult class. Right now I am watching Jim’s kata. He’s a middle aged man with a blue belt with a red stripe who wants to test in one week for his red belt. His kata was shaping up nice, but the end needs a bit more cleanup before my dad will pass him. As he gets back to the end from where I told him to start I glance at the clock. It’s only 8:45pm, class had started at 8 and I had just broken up the class into testing groups. Usually I wait until 9 to do that so they can use the last half hour but since the test was in one week, I wanted students to take full advantage of me and the other high ranks for advice and fixing.
“Ki-ah!”
Jim just finished and I noticed in the corner of my eye that the dojo’s door just opened. I glanced over to that direction and see the CSI woman from the night Jeanette was killed, Trisha Melrose and a younger girl, probably her daughter. “Well what do you know, I wonder if they are interested in lessons or on their way to visit the Baskin Robbins a few doors down.” I think with a smile as I turn back over to Jim.
“It’s looking better Jim but I want you to work on that crescent kick near the end, you tend to drop it too early. You'll have to excuse me Jim, some potential new students just walked it. Go work with Brock, he can help with any other material that you want looked at.” I say with an encouraging smile.
“Thanks sensei. I’ll work on it more.” He says then bows. He turns and heads to the corner where Brock is at and I head over to the seating area where Trisha is. She gives me a smile as I approach.
“Hi, Ms. Melrose. How are you?” I ask with a grin.
“Hi Harley and you can just call me Trisha. This is my daughter Karlie, she’s ten.” Trisha says placing her hand on Karlie’s back.
“Hi Karlie, nice to meet you.” I say with a smile.
“Hi.” Karlie says as she gives me a shy smile.
“We were stopping for ice cream when I noticed your school here, and I was wondering if I could sign Karlie up for some classes.”
“Hey, I was two for two on my guess.” I think to myself as I answer her. “Sure, we have a kid’s class for six to thirteen year olds that meets on weekdays and Saturday, why don’t you step into our office and we can talk it over.” I say gesturing to the office next to us.
“Sure.” She says as she follows me through the opened office door. I sit behind the desk and they take the two seats against the wall across from me. I glance through the window on my right that shows the class to make sure everything is going good then turn back to Trisha and Karlie.
“Ok, so the kids class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30pm to 7:30pm and on Saturdays from 12:00pm to 1pm. The first two weeks are free to see if she likes it and if Karlie wants to continue then its $35 a month which is paid every four weeks.”
“Well since I work odd hours, we might be able to make the evening classes work. Do you or your dad teach the kid classes?”
“I usually do Thursdays since my dad has been trying to finish our basement these last few months but he does teach on the weekends. Bill teaches the Tuesdays and weekends as well since they switch off once and a while. Bill is here right now if you two would like to meet him since I take it you will probably start next Tuesday.” I reply as I glance back through the window to spot Bill.
“Sure we’d like that, right Karlie?” Trisha asks her daughter with a smile. Karlie gives another shy smile and nods.
“Aww cute girl, the shy ones are always so adorable.” I think as I get up. Bill glances my way and I wave him over through the window. He nods and crosses the room. He comes in through the connecting door that only we and my dad use. “Trisha and Karlie, this is Bill Downey. He is a sensei here as well as one of my dad’s best friends. Bill this is Trisha Melrose and her daughter, Karlie.”
“Hi, nice to meet you both.” He says as he extends his hand for Trisha to shake. He gives her a nice smile as she takes it. He gives Karlie one as well as he goes to shake hers next. She hesitates but timidly takes it with a small smile of her own. “So you want to learn karate, huh? Well this is a fun place to learn it at. You’ll make a lot of new friends and learn to beat up bad guys.” Bill says with a wink.
“My mom puts bad guys away, she’s a CSI.” Karlie says with a bigger smile, coming out of her shell.
“She is? Wow that’s a cool job, you must be very proud of her.” Bill says with another wink in our direction this time.
“I am and I want to learn how to beat them up like Harley can! Mom said Harley is really strong and brave!....Can I use your bathroom please?” Karlie asks me.
“Sure, it’s across the room where it says Women on the door, just take your shoes off before going on the carpet.” I tell her as I point through the window to across the room full of students. She gets up and says thanks then walks out towards the seating area to take off her shoes. Bill looks from me to Trisha then gives a little smirk.
“So you both have met before, I take it?”
“Just once.” Trisha answers with a smile.
“Yeah, when she was on the job actually. She asked me some questions about that girl who died at Conner’s brother’s house that went to my school.” I briefly explain.
“Oh yeah, I remember that, it was on the local news since this is a bit of a college town. A CSI is a very interesting job, Mrs. Melrose.” He comments to Trisha.
“It’s just Ms. and I’m actually the Supervisor for my team.” She corrects politely.
“Excuse me for the mistake and that is very impressive.” Bill replies with a charming smile.
“Thank you, I appreciate the compliment.” She adds giving a smile of her own.
I glance back at the class as the two exchange words. I see a few teens slacking off which tells me it’s time to send Bill back out there to get them to work. I clear my throat then address Bill. “Bill, some kids are goofing off do you mind taking care of it while I finish up here?”
“Not at all.” he replies as he looks at me. He then looks back at Trisha. “It was a pleasure meeting you and Karlie, I look forward to seeing her…and you next week.” He says flashing another smile. He then turns back to me then nods and excuses himself through the door he came in. I notice Trisha watching him leave, giving him a brief once over.
“So she is kind of interested. I got Jeff to finally ask out Tina and now they have a date for tomorrow, why not help out Bill’s love life.” I think with a mischievous look in my eye. I then speak to snap Trisha out of her thoughts.
“He’s single, you know.”
“Wha- excuse me?” she says in surprise.
“And he’s great with kids.” I add with a smile.
“Now hold on Harley, I don’t thin--” she tries to get out but I cut her off.
“Don’t give me that, ‘I don’t think blah blah blah crap. I saw you check him out and I can tell you this. I’ve know Bill since I was young and my Dad has known him longer than that. He doesn’t give a woman that kind of smile unless he is interested. He’s been single for almost eight years and is ready to get back in the dating game. He is a great catch, you’ll see that on Tuesday on how good he is with Karlie.”
“Well, aren’t you Ms. Match Maker?” she says with a small laugh.
“I try,” I say with a smirk, “But seriously talk to him a bit when you pick up or drop off Karlie. I bet he will try to ask you out if you get to know him a bit.”
“Hmm…I’ll think about it, ok?” she says with a smile. Karlie comes back in shortly after she says this.
“Are we ready mom? Can I start on Tuesday?” she asks Trisha.
“Yes you can, do we need to sign anything?” Trisha asks to me.
“Not until Tuesday, Bill will set you up in our computer system. Just make sure she wears a t-shirt and gym shorts.” I say as I walk from around the desk.
“Awesome!” Karlie says with a big grin.
“Thanks Harley, I’ll see you next week then.” We shake hands and they walk back out the main door to go get their ice cream.
“Small world. I’ll have to fill dad in later.” I think as I go back into the main room to help for the rest of the class time.
9:30 rolls around before I know it and the dojo empties out. Bill is the last one to leave before me. He waves good bye, still having a smile on his face since he met Trisha and her daughter Karlie. I’m curious to see if anything will develop. I hope so because Bill is in need of a new relationship, it’s time to get back out there and I think him and Trisha would work well as a couple. I push those thoughts aside and start locking things up and turning off lights. I grab my bag from the locker room and walk out the back door to my car. I glance up at the sky and both directions as I walk across the small back lot. Ever since that night at the hardware store I have been keeping my eyes peeled for any sign of Slaiden even though it being night fall doesn’t help my sight. I get in my car and sit back in the seat, letting out an exhausted sigh.
It has been a nerve racking week for me, even without a certain demon. Since Bill had told Brock and Terrance and a few others who remembered Steve about mine and his fight, word spread around the dojo like wild fire. Students have been talking about it all week, saying things to me like ‘Wow, Harley that’s awesome!’, ‘Did you make him bleed?’ and ‘Finally that jerk got what was coming to him.’ I just had to grin and bare it since I only told my dad and Bill about what happened to Steve. I just told them it was from a car accident. Both of them didn’t seem too surprised about it actually. They both had given similar responses saying that they felt sympathy towards his family and that it was unfortunate that he died. But they also said that it was his own doing since he left pissed off. Driving mad is just as bad as driving drunk. They felt sorry that he lost his life but he had been irresponsible. I had to bite my tongue about telling the truth that it was a powerful demon that killed him. But thinking back on it, Steve had probably been so pissed that when Slaiden found him, he was still looking for a fight. I wouldn’t be surprised if they had fought before Slaiden killed him. He had probably been too mad to care who or what he was fighting as long as he could beat something to a pulp.
I thought back on this past weekend about Steve and Jeanette. “Steve had been a jerk and Jeanette has pulled some rotten stunts before but to die...wait a second…..Mark Hanson had caused a bit of trouble in the past as well….” A connection was starting to form in my mind as I think back to the other victims as well.
“The gang goes without saying and even though I don’t know who the other guy was in my dream, he did look vaguely familiar though. In fact….all of Slaiden’s victims had either gotten in trouble with the law or had been bad people to a certain degree. But why kill just these people if there are so many bad people in the world? Why does Slaiden’s summoner want these people dead?” I thought as I tried to fit the pieces together.
“I don’t see any connection besides that I knew two of them but Steve had gone to a different high school and I have no idea where he was going to college if he even was…. And the gang doesn’t make any sense at all unless Slaiden was only going after one of the guys. And the other two men…Maybe it’s just coincidence that I knew Steve and Jeanette…But in my dream, Slaiden said I must have some connection to the summoner. But what?...I guess I’ll have to do some research if I want to stop these killings….”
“Who could he be?”
-------------------- ( Third Person POV ) --------------------
Slaiden was on the roof, relaxing with his back against the surface and hands behind his head. One leg was bent upward, while the other lay outstretched. He appeared perfectly casual with his eyes closed but in reality he was listening to his surroundings, paying attention to every detail. He is trying to pass the time, growing bored from waiting on the boy to give the word to kill.
Slaiden is growing impatient though as he listens to the passing cars moving through the subdivision. The boy is at work and won’t be back for another half hour around 10pm. Slaiden has already been through the boy’s whole book collection, reading whatever interested him. He even made Jeff check out books for him when he went to renew the book earlier today. But reading can only interest him for so long. When there is a nice, inviting night like tonight, he is itching to spread his wings and take off. He has done so before during his down time to explore the changed world but since Jeff had discovered it was his friend that had been interfering with his revenge, Jeff had been checking constantly to see if he was either in the room or on the roof. Slaiden wasn’t a dog and he did not like being treated as a new born puppy in training who needed to be watched at all times. The boy didn’t trust him which didn’t bother Slaiden in the slightest. In fact, he enjoyed being able to torture the boy mentally by making him worry if Harley and him were having some ‘fun’. If only he could just kill the boy and collect the girl to take her back to his world. But by demon law as old as the universe itself he could only take a human back with him if it was entitled in a contract.
Thinking of the girl, a smirk appears on Slaiden’s face as he decided that it was the perfect opportunity to feel the wind beneath his wings and find out where the girl lives for future reference. After all he did have 15 more minutes before the boy’s shift ended and another 10 before he’d be home. Opening his eyes to the night sky, he slowly rises. Summoning his wings to appear with his power, he flexes them as he breathes in the scents of the air. He focuses his mind and senses for the girl. Not finding her nearby within a half mile radius he decides to harden his concentration.
“Now where can you be…..Ah, there you are.”
He senses her moving northward, a few miles southwest from here. He blinked out of his trance-like stare and leapt into the air. He soared high above the trees and streets. Within minutes he spotted her car slowing down as she moved through a subdivision similar to Jeff’s. Slaiden circled wide high above the houses as she parked in a driveway of a two-story house. He watches her open the garage door and enters the house without any stalling. He slowly descends and lands on her roof without any sound. He crouches low against the surface and listens to the sounds inside and picks up that there were four people in the house.
“So she has her parents and a brother…she better appreciate the time she has left with them.” He thinks as he hears Harley go up the stairs to her room. Slaiden notices there is a tree standing in the back yard that is right outside her window. He moves to the edge of the roof above her window and waits until he hears her start moving things around in her closet. Taking advantage of her back being turned, he silently leaps onto a large branch just above Harley’s eyesight through her window. He peers down into her window and watches as she turns away from her closet. She turns on her radio on the night stand and lies back on to her bed, closing her eyes and listening to the music filling the room. Slaiden watches the rise and fall of her breasts as she breaths, completely letting herself relax. He smirks as she lets her guard down, feeling completely safe in her room. Harley starts humming along then singing as she pulls herself up. Slaiden’s keen ears hear the sound of her voice as she sings moving across the room. She doesn’t have a bad voice and he didn’t mind watching her shake he butt a bit as she puts her duffle bag into her closet.
Harley then bends down in front of her dresser and opens the bottom drawer. She takes out a t-shirt and pajama shorts then starts to undo her jeans. She pauses once they are unbuttoned and zipped down and glances at the window. She half smiles and shakes her head slightly as if embarrassed. She then walks towards the window unaware that part of her pink and white striped underwear are exposed to a pair of golden eyes. Slaiden stays still as to not attract any attention to the tree as she walks closer. She looks out into the distance then closes the blinds to her room, never noticing the spying demon at all.
“Damn, time to head back then. I’ll be back when the house is empty, ‘little girl’.” Slaiden thinks with a mischievous glint in his eye.
Once a few seconds pass Slaiden jumps back onto the roof then spreads his wings. He senses no humans outside to spot him so he takes off. He circles Harley’s neighborhood once more before heading back to Jeff’s house. He focuses on locating the boy when he senses him a few miles away, driving in his car. Soon the house comes into view. He descends slowly, savoring the feel of the breeze against his face.
He lands on the roof, detecting only the parents in the house still. Within seconds Slaiden hears the car pull up into the drive way. Taking that as his cue, he swings through the open window into the bedroom. He grabs one of the library books of the desk and sits on the bed with his back against the wall. He bends one leg to support his arm as he holds the book open at a random page to his face. He hears the boy coming up the stairs so he relaxes a bit to appear as if he never left. The door opens to reveal a tired Jeff. He lets out a yawn then says hello as he pulls off his work shirt. Once it’s removed he grabs a t-shirt hanging over his chair. Slaiden speaks as the boy pulls the new shirt over his head.
“So am I getting out of here tonight boy? I’m starting to miss the smell of fresh spilt blood” he says with a fanged smile.
“No but you can continue the list tomorrow.” Jeff answers calmly.
“So you have figured ‘that something’ out?” Slaiden asks as his smile turns into a confident smirk.
“No…..but I’ll figure that out soon.” Jeff says as he avoids eye contact.
“Not likely.” Slaiden thinks before commenting. “Looking forward to your answer.”
Jeff ignores the comment and just tosses his work shirt in the hamper. “I’m exhausted so if you don’t mind I’m going to bed.”
“Hnnn” is all Slaiden says as he closes the book he was pretending to read. He slowly rises, taking his time. He then gets a smirk on his face and adds. “Of course, you need your beauty rest for you date tomorrow night.”
A small blush appears on Jeff’s face as he looks away. He turns around and starts stripping off his pants to give Slaiden the hint that he is done talking. The demon just turns away and leaves out the window, leaving his book on the bed. Once he gets on the roof he lies down and stares at the night sky.
“Finally some fun…and maybe more.”
