Part 1, chapter 14
- XIV -
I was amazed when Elsie actually was somewhat tolerable. I mean, as soon as I got home, she immediately told me to go clean the kitchen and do the laundry, but she didn’t throw anything at me in her usual manner. I guess Vicky told her that she’ll find out if she’s been nasty to me, and that Elsie will be beyond sorry if that ever happened. Well, I shrugged to myself, thank Dragon for small favors. Cleaning and laundry I could handle. As long as she doesn’t throw fireballs at me or locks me in that dreadful closet again, I’ll be fine.
My dad finally came back from his trip at the last day of October and I could breathe somewhat freely. I very carefully told him that I am friends (let’s start with the word “friends” and see how he reacts, shall we?) with Raven who just happened to be a half-demon and to my enormous surprise he just shrugged.
“Selena,” he said calmly. “As long as he doesn’t go nuts on you, I don’t care about who his parents are.”
Huh, I guess the word “friends” didn’t fool him. I was beyond relieved though. I suppose even in this dreadful little town there still was a ray of hope for somewhat of a peaceful existence for us. That was good.
What wasn’t good was Arlen’s extreme interest in me lately. He would always try talking to me, offer me rides in his car, which I kept declining less and less politely. I couldn’t understand why the hell he was so interested in me. Cerylia hissed at me like an angry cat every time she saw me and finally I was fed up with her behavior.
“Look,” I said patiently one of those days. “I understand that you are crazy about Arlen. Please, please, please try to get him away from me! Believe me, I have no desire whatsoever to be with him, okay?”
She looked at me like I was barking mad but her shoulders relaxed slightly.
“Cerylia,” I said then. “If you will be able to get him away from me, I will do your laundry until the day I move out of that house, okay? Even if I am on my deathbed, I swear!”
She hemmed somewhat doubtfully, but stopped hissing at me ever since I told her that. She would try her best to get Arlen’s attention, and finally somewhere around the middle of November, I almost cried with relief when I saw her getting into his car. Oh, Great Dragon, please let it happen!! Cerylia was pretty, somewhat smart - she could actually carry a decent conversation - and she could be really sweet to people, as long as it wasn’t me or some random half-breed.
I almost forgot all about Vicky’s spells - even though I still remembered them word for word - and honestly thought that I would never have to use them, thank Talath, until the end of November. That was when Arlen lost it completely and Raven died.
