Fifteen

For those few who have been waiting patiently for the next chapter, I apologize for the delay. I didn't want to post chapter 15 until I had 16 done because it would have left you with such a horrible cliffy, and I did not know exactly when I would have time to write 16. At long last, I've completed both chapters and have started on 17. So, without further ado...

~Chapter 15~

The short stretch Cadillac stopped in front of the office. The driver exited his seat, quickly moving to open the back door so I could rejoin the land of the working stiffs. I shifted in my seat to launch myself back to reality. A gentle hand upon mine gave me pause. I turned my head.

The devastating smile increased my heart rate instantly.

Lisimba slowly raised my hand and dropped a light kiss on my knuckles. My legs were already jelly from the wild session in the shower, then again while I tried to dress for work.

Only some miracle found me arriving on time. I knew that, given the choice, he would have me screaming in ecstasy until I lost consciousness, only to wake me so we could do it all over again.

“Have a pleasant day, ma chère. I will return for lunch.”

My brain managed to somehow work beyond the hormones and recall that I’d missed a day. “I should skip lunch today.” I know my bottom lip had to have puckered outward in a pout. The last thing I actually wanted to do was skip lunch. “I’ll have plenty to catch up from yesterday.”

He nodded. “Then I will deliver food to you.” That devilish grin accompanied lowered lashes. “You must keep up your strength.”

I huffed, then smacked him playfully on his chest. “You behave.”

He pulled me in quickly for a lingering kiss, declaring afterward, “So that you do not forget me while you work.”

I exhaled sharply and shook my head. “Yeah, because that’s likely to happen?” I sighed, then dropped a quick kiss. “I need to get in there. I’ll see you at five to pick me up?” I did not wait for his response. I knew he would be here waiting for me to finish before I ever clocked out.

The car remained in place until I crossed the threshold into the brick building.

I made my way to my department, dropped my shoulder bag in my bottom file drawer and hit the button to boot the computer. Then I grabbed my mug, plucked a tea bag from the tin of kiwi-flavored green tea, and trudged to the break room. I spotted a sticky note on the phone as I turned.

Cici, see me first thing to sign the vacation request form.

I chuckled. She could have left the form on my desk. She wanted the dish.

A fresh pot of hot water sat ready when I got to the coffee station. Genevieve really wanted to see me right away. This could delay me getting caught up anytime soon. I knew she’d want details, but the last time water sat ready for me, I’d spent all morning in her office.

Delaying the inevitable made little sense. I filled my mug, added the requisite sugar and prepared myself for the long haul.

She held the phone to her ear when I entered; this I considered her normal state. I closed the door and took the seat opposite her, waiting while she checked her voicemail.

The receiver had not hit the rocker yet when she let out a whistle. “Whoa, Nellie! Someone dropped her guard and let a visitor into the sanctuary.” Her eyebrows raised a fraction. “And judging by your relaxed demeanor and that shit-eating grin, I’d say the visitor worshipped the goddess quite well.”

I giggled; I couldn’t help it. Gen’s euphemisms crossed the line to ‘highly inappropriate in the work place’, but she kept life interesting. Even more so, she hit the nail on the head more often than not, and I felt completely giddy to be the recipient after remaining chaste for so long. Although I’d meant to keep my silence and hold her in suspense, I found myself sharing the juicy details, avoiding any mention of the unpleasant happenings of yesterday or anything regarding his history.

“Holy hell, woman,” she exclaimed when I finished speaking. “Color me green and paint me jealous. I knew that man would be hot, but Christ Almighty!” She leaned forward conspiratorially. “Does he have a brother?”

By the time I actually signed the vacation form, three hours had passed. I stood to leave, swaying on my feet. I caught the edge of Gen’s desk, raising a hand to my forehead to stop the spinning.

Gen jumped from her seat and rounded the desk, wrapping her arms around me. “Are you okay?”

A few blinks later and the ceiling and floor returned to their natural locations. “I think my body isn’t used to so much excitement.” I straightened to my full height. “I’ll be okay.”

Gen insisted on walking beside me to make sure I didn’t fall on the way back to my work station. To keep anyone from suspecting, we discussed the files I needed to review to get caught up from my missed day of work.

The next several hours passed in a flurry of activity. I managed to get through more than half the files on my desk before I had to deal with any phone calls. However, once the phone started ringing, it kept on nearly non-stop.

As I reached for the tenth phone call, I felt the muscles in my back tighten. The ripple increased to a full-blown spasm quickly and radiated outward. My arms shook, my fingers and toes curled under, and I felt my neck pulling backwards.

The call went to voicemail. I managed to stretch my arm just enough to hit the intercom button connecting me directly to Gen.

“What’cha need, honey?” Her cheerful tone answered.

I couldn’t move my mouth. Every muscle in my body had tightened and would not respond, no matter how hard I concentrated. The pain grew too fast to mentally control.

“Cici?”

My arms jerked to the side, sending half the stuff from the desk clattering to the floor.

“Cecilia, what’s wrong?”

The momentum tipped my chair. My head collided with the surface as I fell and then bounced on the carpet. I had absolutely no control, even though I maintained consciousness. However, the impact with the desk made my vision tunnel.

I heard footsteps running my way. Gen’s hands settled on my shoulder.

“Cici, can you speak?”

She paused for just seconds then grabbed my phone.

“This is Genevieve Montreal at the Hewitt-Johnson Accounting Firm. I need an ambulance. We have an employee with seizures…grand mal…female, age 35, history of Parkinson’s… I think she hit her head…Thank you.” Another brief pause. “Melina, it’s Gen. When the ambulance arrives, escort them to Cici’s desk right away. Yeah, I’ll let you know.”
