Chapter 15
Chapter 15
At this point Ray had heard enough. He was on the verge of explosion and his most intensive urge was to punch his uncle square in the face to send him flying through the corridor.
That this was impossible made him even angrier.
“Don’t talk to him like that!” he said with a voice that screamed pure murder and took a step into the hallway.
“Ray?!” the other two asked at the same second.
“What are you doing here? You should be on the-“, Brian began but Martin interrupted him.
“You didn’t go to see the game?” the man asked as if nothing had happened.
“I did, parts of it. But then I found Arnold talking to you…”
“He was just helping.”
“He wasn’t. In fact, he screwed everything!”
“What are you talking about? He helped you to get rid of that-“
“Watch your words… Uncle.”
“Listen, who’s talking. Now go upstairs again. We’ll talk later!”
Why did Ray all of a sudden lack the ability to shout? Because that was what he wanted.
He wanted to scream and fight at that impossible discrimination, misunderstanding and unfairness.
“I will not leave this place and I tell you, you will loose this match if you kick out Brian.”
“I don’t think so, Ray. You just don’t know the team. He really got you that sure of him? Do you really think the team can’t do without him? If a gay boy can play soccer, straight men will do even better.”
“But it’s remarkable that your best players are all gay. And by the way, taking Jack from the defence would be stupid. That area would have a deficit with Arnold and the attack wouldn’t be very strong either, because Jack is one of the best guys I’ve seen in the defence and one of the worst forwards.”
Martin was puzzled. He could not really compare what his nephew had just said; after all he was helping him out of this tricky relationship! Why did he not appreciate it? But instead of thinking about it Martin just said, “Alright. Whatever, stay here, leave, do as you please but-“
Ray actually followed that order - he did as he pleased, pulled Brian close to him and kissed him.
Doing that, he intently watched his uncle and was glad to see his angry face break into a more human, confused expression.
“Right, but don’t come running when you get hurt.”
With that the coach went into the locker room to talk to the rest of the team.
“What was that just now?” Brian angrily asked.
“Excuse me? I defended you!”
“You shouldn’t have, he’s your uncle!”
“I punched my dad! Don’t forget that!”
“Yes, but then you had a good reason, you know…”
“Just now I had an equally good reason. It’s so- It’s crap what he just did! He can’t take his best player from the pitch just because he’s gay!”
“Will you stop shouting, please?”
“Why? Don’t want anybody to hear us? Alright here we go, I fucking LOVE Brian Waring!” Ray announced with an even louder voice, causing the blond to blush. And to chuckle. He just had to remember how insecure about the same Ray had been in the beginning.
“And I love you too, Ray Finnegan.”
Ray - suddenly strongly aware of what he had said - grinned sheepishly. “Well, yeah. So… you’re not mad at me? Because I interfered?”
“I guess… not really, no.”
Ray smiled at him and softly wrapped his arms around the younger one’s waist.
“Brian, I need to ask you something.”
“What is it?”
“Um… this ain’t easy for me but…”
Brian felt his heart sink… this was not going to be proposal, was it?
“Do you, Brian Waring, want to spend the second half of the match with me?”
Brian was silent at first and then started laughing. He had to hold his stomach and support his weight against Ray when his brunette lover asked, “Is that relief in your voice? What were you thinking I was gonna ask?”
“N-not so important, dear…” Brian managed to say in his laughing fit.
“Oh come on! Tell me!”
Brian frowned and then whispered with another blush crouching up his face, “Well, something like… a proposal, or so.”
“Well, in fact it was a proposal, just not for marriage, you see?”
Now they both had to laugh.
Zach came out of the locker room.
He was grinning widely and whispered, “Listen guys, my dad’s on the verge of killing you. Better not make such noise.”
‘Crap!’ Brian thought and said aloud, “Um… Zach? Did you hear… everything we said out here?”
“Sure.” Ray’s cousin laughed. “This door’s not very thick and I thought it was meant for everyone to hear, anyway?”
He shot Ray an asking look, who immediately hugged Brian from behind, kissed the gold strands and determinedly nodded.
“Exactly.”
Voices were heard from inside the room. Jack showed up in the doorframe, curiously eyeing the conversation and holding back the others. Having satisfied his interest he pushed everyone back into the room and shut the door, hiding a soft smile from the coach.
The others immediately bombarded him with nosy questions but he just shrugged and stayed silent.
Zach smiled at his cousin and Brian. “I’m sorry for whatever my dad told you.” he whispered, pointing at the door behind him. “But I think he’s not really angry. Just confused… Or something.”
It was clear that Zach felt uncomfortable.
Ray simply nodded. He wished the confusion would not last for too long.

During the rest of the match, the coach of Brian’s future team was looking for the blond. When he finally found him and Ray on the stand, his first question was why Brian was not on the pitch and not even with the substitute players any more.
After careful consideration, Brian decided not to tell him the truth.
“I don’t feel very well.”
“You look pretty healthy to me, boy.”
Brian smiled. What could he have said?
“One thing, I don’t want somebody in my team who cries about every little scratch!” the man said warningly.
“I don’t, really!”
“Then what’s wrong with you? And don’t tell me you don’t feel well! I’ve seen people who didn’t feel well and their faces were not as bright and awake as yours!”
“… I had… an argument… with the coach.”
“About tactics?”
“Not really, no…”
“What else?”
All or nothing.
“About love… in a way.”
Ray heavily sighed. He went towards the door but Brian held him back.
“About love? Ah, I see. About your passion for the game?”
“No. About my love for him…” Brian pointed at Ray.
The man obviously did not know what Brian was talking about.
“I don’t quite understand.”
“I love him. Like… love. And our coach obviously doesn’t appreciate that.”
“Oh…” was all the other one could manage. Ray was again surprised about the determination in Brian’s voice. It seemed his little blond angel finally grew to know what he wanted and fight for it.
“Well… is that really a reason to exclude you from the game?”
“Obviously, yes.”
Ray could almost feel the relief in his lover’s voice. No shouting, no intolerance from that side. What a blessing. Still, it took some time for the adult to comprehend what the actual problem was.
“But still, are you sure that’s what’s depressing you? When we talked the last time you always seemed to smile?”
Ray finally asked Brian’s question, “So you are fine with… him being gay?”
“Sure. If he doesn’t try something on his team mates in the showers.” the coach grinned.
“I don’t hope so, either” Ray added.
“Originally I just came here to invite you along to our training tomorrow, Brian. We’ll start at one p.m. Don’t be late!”
Brian nodded and then stared at his new coach walking towards the door and waving at the blond as if they were old friends.
After that, Brian and Ray did not wait for the match to end and went home right away. They wanted to go swimming again, but were forced to stay home by a heavy summer rain. Brian melancholically stared out of the window while they discussed what to do in the evening instead.
For a while, they talked about soccer, about their families and friends. They touched on almost every subject and Ray felt very content with the situation. Never had he talked so long to someone before.
When the light began to fade in the evening, and a soft red light flooded through the window of the living room, Brian softly smiled
“It stopped raining. You mind going swimming now?”
“Excuse me? Now?”
“Why not?”
“It’s almost eight! And soon it’s gonna be dark and the water…”
“What about the water?”
“Dunno. It just rained.”
“Air is the freshest after rain. It doesn’t really affect the water temperature though. Not when the lake has had days of sun to save the warmth.”
“But we can’t-”
“Why not? Have you never done that before? Swimming in the evening?”
Ray shook his head.
Brian smiled again and commanded his lover to stay on the sofa and wait. While Ray was contemplating the night time swimming issue Brian collected two towels and two bottles of water, their mobile phones and the key to the house. After that, he looked for his swimming trunks and realised that he had left them at home.
“Ray? You mind me borrowing one of these?” Brian held up Ray’s spare short.
“Whatever…”
“Thanks love!” Brian laughed and vanished into their bedroom.
Ray suddenly shouted after him, “Leave the shorts. We’ll swim commando!”
Brian’s head appeared in the doorframe, with eyes wide open.
“WHAT?!?”
“In for a penny, in for a pound, Bri!”
“I don’t have a problem with that. I just thought that you were too shy for something like that.”
Ray snorted in mock outrage.
Brian knew a nice place close to their place where trees and bushes covered the area so well, that you would not find it without knowing what to look for.
There was a small wooden landing, which was the only free space untouched by the shrubs.
Brian went ahead, took a towel and spread it out on the planks. He then undressed and piled up his clothes as far away from the water as he could. Ray closely examined his moves and stared at the blond. Brian looked up with a charming smile. He presented an adorable image - hair ruffled, and wearing nothing but a saucy grin on his face.
Ray came closer and kissed him. He could not keep his hands off the younger one and instinctively closed his arms around Brian’s waist. However, they did not stay there, but travelled further down the soft skin, until they came to rest on the naked boy’s behind.
Brian giggled and broke the kiss.
“Undress.” He commanded, unable to keep his face serious.
“Huh?”
“Do you want to swim with these?”
Brian pointed at Ray’s clothes.
“No, but… You go swimming and I’ll watch you.”
“So you ARE too shy! Or… don’t say you can’t swim! It’s no fun with you just sitting around and watching!”
“I CAN swim, it’s just that…”
Ray sighed heavily.
“I thought we could just sit next to each other a while and… relax?”
“I told you I’d like to go swimming, so that’s no excuse! We can still talk afterwards! Oh, come on! The last time I really had fun at the lake was two years ago!”
Ray sighed again and obeyed. Taking off his clothes, he felt Brian’s appreciative stare on him all the time. It made him feel sexy and attractive, and caused him to make it a slow and sensual act. When he was totally naked he was about to recollected all his clothes from the ground to throw them onto Brian’s, when the blonde came running towards him and pushed him into the water. Brian jumped right behind.
Caught by surprise Ray did not immediately know what to do in the water. His mind was still focused on his clothes. When he ran out of air and needed to breathe, he started swimming upwards to the surface.
As soon as he was capable of speaking again he angrily shouted, “Was that really necessary? How old are you? Five? My clothes are completely wet now!”
“What about a wet T-shirt contest later on, then?” a happy voice sang from behind and before Ray had the chance to face Brian, the blonde already clung tightly onto him. Ray struggled to keep his head above the surface of the water. Brian grinned and pulled his lover down with him, without letting go of his waist.
The brunette almost panicked when the cool water was caressing his face again. He held his eyes firmly shut and did not dare to move anymore. He feared situations like these, when the world around you came so close. Suffocation was the worst way of dying Ray could ever imagine. It did not matter whether it was water, snow or any other situation of breathlessness.
He kept praying Brian would take his hands off.
Instead, the blond wrapped his legs around Ray’s hips and pulled himself closer. Despite the feel of their bodies, touching the brunette was much too occupied thinking about regaining his composure to appreciate it.
Soft lips touched his neck and wandered towards his tightly shut mouth, while hands lightly traced his spine.
Ray resisted the urge to open his eyes in surprise.
The kiss made him become aware of their position. For a second he completely forgot about the water and responded to it, wrapping his arms around the fragile blond.
The failed attempt to breathe reminded him of the water around him. Ray coughed, which made it even worse. Brian immediately let go of the older one and pushed him back to the surface.
Five minutes later, Ray was breathing normally again.
“I’m sorry,” Brian whispered.
Ray looked at him. His expression was unreadable. He swam towards the landing stage and clung to it for some minutes, while he was trying to consolidate his breathing rhythm. Meanwhile, Brian did not dare to say anything, or to come closer.
Only when Ray looked up and his face appeared less focused on his vital function did the blond start to speak, or rather whisper.
“I’m so sorry Ray. I didn’t know that you had such problems, or that you… I mean, you weren’t prepared and I should’ve known and all and…”
When he looked up Ray was swimming closer towards him. His face displayed an entire cocktail of different emotions; fear, anger, interest and a certain aroma of curiosity, which now seemed to outweigh the others.
“Indeed, you could have warned me…”
“I know. And I’m so sorry, please forgive me.”
“Sure… But…”
A boyish smile appeared on Ray’s lips, before he continued.
“Despite my almost suffocating, I could see where the romanticism should have been. Therefore, to give you the Hollywood-ish feeling of the situation… you may try again. Only with warning this time.”
“Was that permission or a suggestion?”
“Choose.”
Brian giggled shyly and let his hands linger on Ray’s hips, careful not to press him down, though.
“Alright, here is my warning. All passengers should hold their breath in a few seconds, because your capitain on this flight will now introduce you to one of his favourite wet dreams.”
Brian pulled Ray down into the water and pulled his head close into a soft kiss. This time Ray was much more relaxed. He placed his hands on the younger one’s hips, pulling him as close as possible until their chests touched.
Ray was sure that this was as close to heaven as humans could possibly get. The water gave him the feeling of flying, which intensified when he closed his eyes. Ray shifted his position and his growing erection touched against Brian’s inner thighs. It was a demanding gesture, and was intensified, when the brunette pushed one leg between Brian’s legs.
The blond responded to it with a more desperate kiss and hands travelling up and down Ray’s back. Brian let his hand find the way down towards their touching erections, in an attempt to increase his pleasure. However, Ray pulled them both upwards and toward the surface again.
“Is everything alright?” Brian asked with barely concealed disappointment.
“Yes, of course. I just can’t hold my breath for too long.”
After a second he added, “This time was a lot more enjoyable. Thank you for taking me here.”
Brian desisted from commenting on that and telling Ray, that he would much rather have the brunette taking him here – in a more salacious sense.
Ray planted a soft kiss on Brian’s shoulder.
In a sudden rush of lust, the young boy provokingly pressed his hard-on against Ray’s body, eliciting a deep moan from him. He pulled his older lover with him towards the wooden planks and motioned him to follow him out of the water. Brian sat down, waiting for Ray to join him; then he laid back on the planks and the towel he had spread out. Ray kneeled over him and bent down for a kiss. Brian pulled him down.
“It’s romantic, isn’t it?” the blond said, while stroking the back of Ray’s head with one hand, and firmly placing the other hand on his behind.
“Well… I guess so.”
“You sportsmen have no idea about things like that, right?”
“May I remind you that you are a sportsman yourself?”
“Unfortunately… Tell me. There are not many gay soccer players, huh?”
“I don’t know any, but I guess there are some. Considering the view in the showers I may say there should be many…”
Ray was grinning at his own comment.
“You must NOT enjoy the view in the showers!”
“Of course I only do when you are there with me!”
Ray went quiet for a while before he continued, “Honestly though, I have never considered another… man interesting. Apart from you…”
Brian looked up at his lover in overwhelming joy.
“You love me…?”
“Hey! Of course I love you!”
Brian smiled brightly and softly kissed Ray on the cheek, before he whispered:
“Make love to me.”
“Here? Now?”
“Why not?”
“It’s getting dark. Don’t you think we should go home soon?”
“Who said we had to take hours?”
“Did you know that you’re an insatiable little boy? By the way, I’m cold. I really think we should go back. We can take a bath tomorrow evening. Then the water will be warm and clean, what do you think?”
Brian sighed. Ray’s voice left no space for disagreement. Just because Brian would refuse to get up before his physical need was eased, Ray helped him with it. The practical thing about nature was that you did not have to clean up the mess afterwards. Brian considered this place to become his new favourite idyllic making out scene.
Ray did not need any further treatment, because he felt cold and not at all in the mood, once the warmth of the water had left his skin. His wound had weakened all his body’s defences, and so he now was whining about cold like a skinny, spoilt rich girl.
After a while, they grabbed their towels and went back towards their house.
Ray insisted on going to bed immediately, despite Brian’s complaints. The younger boy did not realise that it was actually he who could not keep his eyes open anymore. However, Ray had realised that this day had taken its toll on his lover and he forced him through the bathroom-undressing-bed procedure with patient determination.
***
The next day was sunny and warm. The rain had cleaned the air and Brian felt a soft breeze against his face, as he was watching his new team mates. He felt free.
This was the first time in his life that he had pulled through his own decisions, without the interfering of his parents or his friends. Ray, somehow, had interfered of course, but only as far as encouragement was concerned. He had been his strength when he had needed it most and that is how he ended up here, on the pitch of a big soccer club. Some of the guys from his old club would have supported his decision as well, Brian was sure about that. But they could have never helped him to just listen to his heart.
His life was not only about soccer and his dreams anymore. He had found someone to trust and believe in, and suddenly there were many other things for him to explore. Ray showed him how to live and how to leave the strictness of his parent’s house behind.
Brian warmly smiled up at Ray when he came closer and sat down beside him. They kissed and then watched the others practicing together.
End.

It was clear that Zach felt uncomfortable.
Ray simply nodded. He wished the confusion would not last for too long.

End.
