I Can't Leave Like This
Daniel stepped down the stairs, groggily, the sun finally waking him up that morning as it shone directly in his eyes. When he rolled over to the other bed in the small room he was almost surprised to see that Bliss was not in it. She was not a morning person, she was actually barely herself without a few good cups of coffee, but perhaps she had gone to talk to Waza. Thumping down the stairs he thought he would find Bliss down with the chess club, drinking coffee, curled up in a chair looking miffed, until it finally kicked in. She wasn’t. He found Waza with one of the heavier set men sitting around the table, both smug, as only Waza could be, and neither really moving or speaking.
“Have you seen Bliss?” Daniel asked the two smiling chess nerds.
Waza only shook his head. “Nah, I’ve been too busy packing, we need to hit the road soon.”
“Well, we aren’t going anywhere any time fast,” came the disgruntled voice of the princess of the cabin. Daniel looked out the doorway to his ex-girlfriend’s sister as Yuna dragged her bag across the floor of the cabin. “Our van is gone, but Daniel’s Porsche is still there.”
“What?” Waza jumped from the table and went running out of the cabin, in far less than was appropriate in the colder weather. He looked towards where the van was, and if this had been a girl’s anime there would be little red streaks to show where the red was, and now had disappeared, flashing on and off.
“What did Bliss do with the van?” Waza asked hopelessly. “I hope she didn’t run off to some convent and become a nun, because that van is expensive.”
“What does that have to do with anything?” Yuna asked, looking to Waza as if the man had just lost his mind.
Waza waved her off and stomped into the house, pointing a finger in Daniel’s direction. “Did you piss her off and cause her to run away?”
“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?” Daniel looked ready to pummel the other boy when the van, and Bliss, came driving back into the driveway.
Bliss hopped out of the car, carrying seven cups of coffee in a tray and looking radiant, compared to last night. This was a shock to all involved knowing how much Bliss could not take mornings without her usual three cups of coffee, or a really good cappuccino.
“Hi guys,” she said happily, handing out coffee to her boyfriend, ‘cousin’ and other person whom she barely knew. “Why do you all look so worried? Do you think I would really steal that van, Waza? Sad, you don’t even trust your cousin.”
Daniel took the coffee gratefully, then knew it was time for him to leave and to finish dressing to leave. Waza turned to Bliss questioningly. “What happened to make you so happy? I’ve never seen you so happy.”
Bliss kissed her cousin on the cheek. “I met someone important, and it just felt right this time,” she explained, then went into the house to hide.
