Candyland- Chapter 15

Luke couldn’t, for the life of him, figure out why George was so upset. Sometime around 4 in the morning he had stormed into Luke’s room, drunk and raving. It was now 4:45 and he still hadn’t stopped crying about something or other. This had only happened once before, and he never did find out what provoked such a reaction from the man. All he could do at this point was watch in mild horror as the strong man he had always known George to be collapse into little bits.

While Luke hoped that this would soon be over so that he might go back to sleep, he also cared enough about his guardian to comfort him in his obvious time of need. He murmured little things like “It’s going to be okay” or “Don’t worry, everything’s fine” to try to cheer him up, but to no avail. It was only a matter of time before George decided to take his frustrations out on Luke’s body, and he wanted to delay or stop that from happening completely.

When the older man had finally quieted down some Luke stated softly, “You know, what you really need right now is a hot shower, some hot chocolate, and a bed of your own.” Then he said something to him that his father had once said before he was taken to the compound, “All things heal with time, and it’s simply a matter of time before whatever happened will heal as well.”

George looked at him in confusion, hardly believing the wisdom coming from this child. “Go now,” he was commanded. “Go now and take care of yourself. What you need right now isn’t in this room, or even in this section of the estate. Go find what you’re looking for.”

Dazed and slightly confused George got up off of the bed, nodded towards Luke and stated, “You’re right.”

The younger boy watched with amusement as the other wandered out of his room, suddenly bound and determined to do whatever it is he was in need of. He simply hoped that the advice he had given wouldn’t be too dangerous if followed.

Shannon was late to rise, not getting up until about noon the next day. She hesitantly left her room, not wanting a confrontation with her suite-mate, and made herself some cereal. It was only half-way through her bowl that she realized the outer door to the suite had been left open. Worried, now, she left the bowl on the countertop and knocked on Jessica’s door, entering when she didn’t hear an answer.

The bed was empty, the closets emptied, and she wasn’t in the bathroom. Fear crept over Shannon like spider legs and she suddenly had a sinking feeling in her heart. There was no way that George would be able to recover from a blow like this if Jessica couldn’t be recovered. She had had more than 8 hours to make her escape and in that time she could be anywhere in the compound.

Once more she lifted the phone and dialed George’s number. Maybe, she thought, he already knows and I won’t have to tell him the bad news myself.

“Oh, Jesus,” George muttered to himself. He was too dazed to make any other comment about the news had received. Jessica was out? How could it have possibly happened? He could have sworn that he had shut and locked the door behind him when he left the suite, but now he couldn’t be sure. If it was he who had made the mistake that let her out he could deal with it, but if the idea had been completely her own she would definitely have to be punished. Now the only problem would be finding her to punish her in the first place. Lucky for him, he had once gone through an escaped child and after that he had installed motion detectors, video cameras, and heat sensors all around the estate. The vast amount of land that the house was on would be too much for her to escape completely, but finding her if she had gotten onto the land would be much more difficult; accomplishable, but difficult.

The command center was just off of his room and down the hall. It was padlocked and also had a voice recognition lock. If any of the kids got into it they could single handedly shut down the entire compound.

Finding her way through the catacombs turned out to be a lot harder than Jessica originally thought it might be. Her first plan had been to try to rescue the other children in the estate, but then realized that the heavy locks on the door were too much for her to handle, and instead focused on trying to get out to the ground level. Unfortunately for her she didn’t remember her trip inside the mansion, so she couldn’t remember how to get out. Trial and error, well, there were certainly worse ways to get out of a place, she just didn’t know how long it would be before her absence was noticed.

She ran up and down hallways all morning and finally found some stairs leading up to the ground level, scampering up them and praying there wouldn’t be something above blocking her way. Miraculously the stairwell led into an open hallway and then into a suite of rooms she already knew to be George’s. Shuddering from the realization she continued through to her final destination—the great outdoors.

Inhaling her first bit of fresh air in a week or more, she spread her arms out in the morning sun. She didn’t know how long she had been inside, but she knew that it had been night when she had left the small suite. The inhabitants of the estate would be searching for her. Jessica glanced around, trying to find a safe place to hide. No trees, no tall grasses, no bushes. All she could do was run as far and as fast as she could.

She ran for hours, coming across trees and bushes, and then a forest. Jessica stopped only briefly to get a couple handfuls of water at a stream she found before she was off again.

At one point, hours later, she came to a well traveled path. It looked like it had been formed by tire tracks but she couldn’t be sure. Taking the direction that continued away from the estate she relaxed a little bit at finding this indication of human inhabitance. It was now just starting to get dark, though in the trees it was almost too dark to see in front of her.

Jessica had a decision to make. She could either continue on, trying to reach whoever it was who had made this path through the forest or she could rest here for a while and start up again when she had rested. She was exhausted and hungry, all of her natural impulses telling her to slow down and take a load off. Something at her mind kept nagging at her to get back up and have her legs carry her far from this place. The heat of the moment was gone and now she doubted her reasons for leaving. It wasn’t that bad there, all and all.

No matter how hard she tried to get comfortable, that nagging just would not leave Jessica alone. It was like a longing to be somewhere else, perhaps a call to her true home. Finally she couldn’t resist anymore and hauled her small, tired frame up onto its sore feet and continued the way she had been going.

Eventually she caught a second wind and started to jog along the path. When Jessica next looked up she could see lights ahead of her. Not knowing if this were some sort of mirage or if it were real she blundered through the low branches and fallen leaves to get closer to her twinkling beacons of hope.

They came closer and closer as she made her way through the boughs. Soon she could smell smoke and something cooking on a fire. From then on she followed her nose, trusting it to be truer than her sleepy eyes. Somehow, like a dream, she finally came to the edge of their camp, her eyes blinking because of the bright lights and her stomach doing somersaults to try to get her attention. Cautiously she stepped one foot outside of the barrier of trees and onto the campsite. Jessica looked around with relief at her good fortune. She was looking for some sign of the camp’s residents and just as she happened upon one he loosed the rock he was carefully aiming at her from his slingshot.

As she crumpled to the ground she heard only one last thing before losing consciousness, “Gotcha sweetheart.”

A/N: Sorry it's been so long that I've posted. I had to really crank this one out tonight but I'm going to write another couple chapters before the end of this week...
