To Love in the Darkness
From Death to Life
“Everything will be fine Octavian. We went through it a hundred times.”
“I’m not so eager to risk you, my love.”
“It’s the only way to save Vertillius.”
The two men sat together in the underground chamber. It had been several weeks since they began to look for a way to remove the darkness from Octavian’s old friend. Together, they spent countless hours poring over old manuscripts and scrolls, ones which Alden could only scarcely understand. It had brought them to this point.
“Be sure to answer the call exactly as rehearsed. One slip and you could damn us both.” Octavian said, taking Alden’s hand and pressing it against his chest.
“Stop worrying.” Alden leaned forward and placed a firm kiss on his lover’s lips. “It will be okay.”
“We should start.”
Alden nodded and swallowed the fear that was starting to creep up this throat. After months of waiting, he was finally going to be turned into a vampire. Part of him was ecstatic that he would finally experience life like Octavian, with powers and telepathic communication. Yet, there was still fear. Fear that he would not be able to learn to live as a vampire. Fear that he would not come back from the intermittent death. It was a fear he would overcome, for Octavian. Not only so they could be together for however many hundreds of years they could take, but also for a much greater purpose.
“Come here.” Octavin commanded as he pulled the smaller man into the shelter of his body. “It will hurt, but only for a short time.” He brushed the hair away from the soft skin of Alden’s neck. “I love you.”
White hot pain racked Alden’s body and he cried out in agony. Just as he thought to reach back and pull Octavian away, the pain turned to pleasure. He focused on that pleasure, the intimate feeling of his handsome lover feeding on his neck. Slowly, he slipped into a world of singular awareness, there was nothing but the feeling of Octavian surrounding him, taking the very essence of his life. Eventually those feelings faded as well. Alden fell into nothingness.
For a few moments, hours, or years, he stayed in the peaceful void. He did not have a body. Nothing weighed him down. He was not happy or sad. He was pure being. Then it came, the push of a question. It spoke no words but required his answer. I Patti.
The spirit that was Alden tried to recall language, but here, there were no sounds to string into words, he could only speak the words in a great universal language. “I want the darkness in Vertillius to be extinguished. In exchange, I will be obedient to my soulmate, Octavian.” The statement left his thoughts and was translated into a million different colors and bands of energy and faded into the distance of the cosmos.
He waited, suspended, for what felt like hours. A soul bobbing gently in space and time. Without warning, energy was returned to him. It was not colored, and of only one frequency. The pure tone washed over him, consumed him. His spirit was becoming heavy again. He could feel himself being pulled down. He became aware of himself again, of his bones and of his skin, of the sharp pain on his neck, and the metallic taste of blood in his mouth.
“Alden.” Whispered a voice from behind him. The sound of his name sent a shock of warmth and longing through him. He pushed back against Octavin, snuggling tighter into him. Strong arms tightened around him.
“It worked.” He said simply.
“I know.”
“It was amazing.”
“It pales in comparison to you, Alden.”
“Should we look for Vertillius?”
“Not yet. We have been through a dangerous ordeal. I need to be with you, to feel you alive in my arms. I need to make love to you.” He said the last as his voice became darkly sensual.
The next rising, they would begin their search for the other vampire. Connected as they are, it would not be difficult for Octavian to locate him. Yet, for now, he had other plans, all of which involved the beautiful man resting gently in his arms.
