Monday came quickly, and I had Amanda with me for most of the time that it was safe to over the weekend. When I got back to school Cecilia was sitting on her throne looking smugger than I’d yet seen her. Of course, she didn’t know exactly why I was absent from school, nor did she know why I was missing so much class… until the assembly that morning, of course…

~~~~~
“I am pleased to announce, a bit later than I’d planned, that we are going to be represented once more in the art exhibition that will be taking place this week.” Melinda was on the stage addressing us and she fixed a stray lock of hair before continuing. “As most of you know, we tend to have our own exhibition weeks in advance to choose a representative, however, this year the art teachers and I managed to choose one among you to go on behalf of the school, due to minor difficulties.” from where I was sitting I could almost make out her embarrassment.
The mutterings in the hall instantly started as the students speculated who it could be. I could actually hear Cecilia telling all who could hear that it had to be her. I rolled my eyes and sighed. Amanda put her hand on my leg and chuckled
“Are you gonna tell her or should I?” I shook my head
“Let’s let Ms. Thorn rush do the talking shall we?” I whispered back
“Before your theories get too wild I must stop you.” she said holding up her hands and silencing the crowd. “Our reprehensive will be Samantha Roberts.”
I swear I heard Cecilia’s jaw drop and a smile filled my face and threatened to never leave.
~~~~~~~~~

“Samantha?! This has to be a mistake! She’s never competed a day in her life!” Cecilia was, to say the least, appalled at Melinda’s announcement and she kept glaring daggers at me during lunch. Personally, I’d rather be in Algebra than to have to listen to her voice over the din of the cafeteria. In fact I’d rather be in English, and I couldn’t help but notice that everyone else had already moved on from the news.

“A bit obsessed much?” Angeli noted glancing at one of the jocks that passed the table. “I mean, she could be more focused on the fact that Lenore is trying to get back with Charlos by hooking up with that new exchange student.”

“Wait, what?” My head swiveled round to see if I could find them.

“They’re over there.” Amanda pointed at the figure of a lean Asian guy with a girl literally hanging off his arm.

“Well doesn’t he feel welcomed.” sarcasm could not be more apparent in my tone.

“Pity she doesn’t know any other way to get a guy than to make him jealous.” I looked at Angeli. Her face was a mirror image of disgust. “And Charlos is such a sweet guy, it hurts to see him with such a skank.” Christopher looked at Lenore with a kind of longing in his eyes and I was going to say something when I felt a stabbing pain in my side. I doubled over in pain, my eyes watering as I fought to breathe. The sounds I heard seemed to come from far away but I felt a gentle hand on my back slowly bringing me back to reality.

“Hey you okay?” Angeli inquired, her face inches from mine. I blinked a few times to get my bearings. Amanda was still rubbing my back, Christopher was sending hate messages to whoever it was that bumped into me and Angeli was still waiting for an answer.

“I’m fine.” I replied thinking ‘Isn’t it funny that that is always the answer?’ “I’ve been better, but I’m fine…” I corrected seeing the skepticism in her eyes “Who hit me?”

“Who else?” Amanda growled

“I’m just surprised you didn’t jump her again.” Christopher seemed disappointed. Amanda’s hand stopped rubbing my back and I looked at her. She bit the side of her lip, but didn’t say anything… her eyes focused on Cecilia’s back.

“That bitch.”

I painted abstract that day in the art room. I just needed to vent my emotions, and not focus on any fixed matter, or material, just be wild and let it all out. Harsh brush strokes, violent colors… I let my pain seep into the canvas in ways that only the art could capture.

And then, I breathed.

“Violent.” a voice I knew all to well said behind me.

“I know.” I said inhaling slightly. ‘Lavender…’

“I heard from Amanda that you’re bullied.”

“A little…” I fidgeted, wondering what color to place next.

“By chance… is that one of the reasons you got into so many fights?”

“Maybe…” I looked down at her shoes, and felt a familiar warm feeling creep up on my face.

“And yet you never bothered to say anything.” disappointment was in her tone and I hesitated before looking into her emerald eyes.

“I’m sorry?” ‘I didn’t want to bother you with my problems…’

“Saige…” she raised her hand to her eyebrows and sighed, “I want to help you… I know where you come from and I know you have it rough… a lot rougher than you’ve been letting me believe for a while now.” I looked away and spotted the blue paint “It’s not right that you have to go through all of that by yourself, and don’t say you have Amanda.”

“I wasn’t gonna…” ‘But she does make it easier to bear.’

“Saige… please reconsider my offer. At least think about it.” she rested a hand on my shoulder and it felt as though her concern and worry literally etched itself into my being and I found myself nodding

“I’ll think about it… I promise.”

~~~~~
She kissed my forehead before she left and I found myself etching a different emotion on the previously anger-filled canvas. The bell rang and Amanda found me still packing away my supplies.
“What’s the name of this piece?” she asked bending over it giving me a fantastic view of her ass when I turned to look at her.
“Umm… ‘Hope in Anguish’ I guess…” she gave me a sweet smile and I felt my heart move. ‘Be still my aching heart.’ “You want to give me a hand with moving it to the corner?” I asked straightening myself and focusing on her ass
“Stop blushing hun. It’s not like you haven’t seen anything.” she smirked, the mischievous glint was present in her eyes and I looked away.
“It needs to dry so don’t touch the front if you can.” I said ignoring her quip. Even though it was true… very true…
~~~~~~~~~~~

“So what’s the plan for the exhibition really?” she asked, now on my bed as I looked over some of my sketches, trying to figure out what medium I really wanted to use wouldn’t be difficult. Pencil and charcoal drawings had become somewhat my specialty

“I’m not sure what they will want me to do really…” I said glancing at her briefly. She was proped up on her elbows looking at me intently “If I had it my way I’d do charcoal or something…”

“But most likely it’s painting.” I nodded. “Well that sucks for you… but at least you know your way around a palette.” I laughed, then held my side in pain

“But what are you doing that day? Going to try to skip?” I cocked an eyebrow.

“No actually. Going to a poetry recital that day.” she seemed smug and rightly so. “I get to showcase some of my poems and possibly get picked to get it published.”

“Do I get to hear?” my curiosity was starting to get the better of me.

“Maybe…” she grinned. I scoffed and turned away.

“Meanie.” I pouted and she dove off the bed, missing me initially and wrapping her arms delicately around my neck

“I will never be mean to you if you didn’t make it so fun.” she whispered, her breath tickling my jaw.

“Well forgive me for making it so easy.” she gave me a swift kiss and went back on my bed, thumbing through her homework again. I should say our homework seeing as she only came to catch me up on the classes that I was missing.

“You know you’re soo lucky that we’re basically doing revision in these classes right.”

“Yeah, I know.”
