Part 14

Inside the Haunted

Part 14

-----------------------------------------------

“Charlie?” my voice squeaked with fear. I couldn’t believe it…Charlie.

“Yes Madigan, it is I: the ghost who haunts the Seahawk and collects souls.” Charlie said.

“Yeah, that’s great and everything, but how can I be so sure that you are? Can you morph into your human so I can see you properly?” I asked bravely. I had to see Charlie for myself. The ship groaned and creaked and shuddered until Charlie himself appeared in front of Bernie and I.

“Holy crap…you really ARE a ghost.” I stammered, backing away from him. Charlie grinned at Bernie and me.

“Hello Madigan and Bernie. Long time no see.” He said briskly.

“Charlie, what have you done to Gus? And everyone else on the ship?” I asked him.

“Haven’t you learned by now Madigan? Tsk tsk. I thought you were smarter than that.” Charlie said darkly.

“Just tell me you creep.” I said, my 18-year-old attitude kicking in. Bernie nudged my arm to make me stop, but I ignored it.

“How brave of you to call me a name like that!” Charlie said, sounding pleased with me. He smiled and I glared at him.

“So are you going to tell us or not?” I asked.

-----------------------------------------------------

“No…I don’t think so. I think I’ll keep it a secret.” Charlie said.

“I’ll let you figure it out. But what’s the sense? I’m just going to kill the both of you anyway.”

“You’re collecting souls, I know that much. But why Charlie? Why are you doing this?” I pleaded.

“So I can become immortal of course.” He said. I was confused.

“But you’re a ghost…aren’t you already sort of immortal?” I asked.

“Of course I am. But if I get enough souls and become immortal to ghosts AND humans, then I will be unstoppable from collecting everyone’s souls that step foot on this ship. And when I’m immortal, there will be nothing to stop me!” Charlie said.

“Well guess what Charlie? You’re not immortal now, so what’s stopping me from killing you now?” I said loudly.

“Madigan! What are you thinking?” Bernie said in a hushed, tense whisper. I really honestly didn’t know myself. How in the world was I going to kill a ghost like Charlie? Charlie laughed and laughed at me.

“I’d like to see that happen Madigan. Catch me if you can!” he said and with a flick of his wrist, he disappeared once again into the boats depths.

“Okay, I will. Let’s go Bernie!” I said into the darkness, sprinting my way through the halls. The hunt had begun.

--------------------------------------------------------

“Oh come on, let me out of here! I have to give Madigan her locket back!” Emily groaned. Charlie had trapped her inside the room where they had met and Emily had located where Madigan’s lost locket was. It was up on the second floor just in front of the entrance hall. But the problem was, Emily was stuck on the seventh floor and couldn’t get the locket.

“How in the world did I get trapped into this room? I’M A GHOST FOR GOODNESS SAKE!” Emily shouted angrily. She should have been able to float through the walls, but it wasn’t that easy. Somehow, Charlie had blocked the room off to trap her inside and she couldn’t get out. Emily needed to find out how he was trapping her inside and see if she could destroy the power source so she could escape. Emily sat down on the ground and pouted.

“Well, at least I finally feel like a human…sort of.” Emily half laughed at herself.

--------------------------------------------------------

“Madigan, this is crazy!” Bernie shouted at me as we sprinted along the halls looking for Charlie.

“I know Bernie, but this has to be done! I need to set everyone on this ship free!” I said over my back.

“But he could be anywhere! He could be somewhere where only ghosts can go or he could be anywhere inside of the hallways hiding and watching us run around in circles.” Bernie said. His footsteps stopped and he bent over to catch his breath. I stopped and went to his side.

“Bernie we have to keep looking. C’mon.” I said, tugging on his arm.

“No Madigan. To me, this just seems like a wild goose chase. Maybe we should just go.” He said. I gasped.

“Bernie, how could you say that? You just want to leave poor Emily here and you want to leave Charlie as he is to kill more people?” I said to him. Bernie stood up again and looked at me.

“So be it. I feel bad for Emily too, believe me. But it would be better if we left. Charlie wouldn’t get our souls and he wouldn’t become immortal. We could go back home and tell everyone not to come out here to this ship. Then everyone would be safe from Charlie.” Bernie said sensibly. Half of me wanted to believe him; he sounded so sane and right. But the other half wanted to stay here and free Emily. What was I going to do?

-----------------------------------------------------------

“Madigan, you know we have to leave. C’mon lets go before he catches us.” Bernie said, dragging me towards the exit. I let him drag me away: I can’t believe I was going to leave Emily behind to fend for herself. Just imagining her sweet face being left here with Charlie made tears come to my eyes. To be so young and die and be stuck where your deathbed is must be horrible. And with a sudden jolt of my stomach, I was leaving my parents behind too!

“Bernie wait! I can’t leave yet!” I said, resisting against him.

“Why Madigan? Come on, let’s go!” he said, dragging me again.

“No Bernie! I’m leaving my parents behind! They’re stuck here too! Don’t you want to help set them free?” I asked. Bernie’s eyes softened and I knew he missed my parents as much as I did.

“I never thought of it like that…they’re stuck here?” he asked me. I nodded.

“Emily showed me a memory of them when she killed them.” I said. Bernie looked at me sadly.

“That’s awful. And Emily was possessed by Charlie I’m guessing?” Bernie asked. I nodded my head miserably.

“I want to help set my parents and Emily free. Will you help me?” I asked Bernie one last time. He hesitated and to my relief, he nodded.

“Oh thank you Bernie, thank you!” I shouted, hugging him tightly. He hugged me back.

-------------------------------------------------------------

While we were hugging, I felt the weirdest sensation, like my body had just been dipped into an ice-cold pool of water. It took my breath away and I started shivering uncontrollably. What was happening to me?

”Madigan, what’s happening?” Bernie asked me, stepping away. I was unable to answer him. I was still shivering and I didn’t know what was happening to me. It really scared me and I tried to reach out to Bernie, but my arm didn’t respond. What in the world was going on? A sudden voice in my head made my insides freeze.

“Hello Madigan.” Charlie said.
