Chapter 14
They sat beneath the gazebo chatting a way. Having the opportunity to be truly candid came in rare and far between intervals. They listened, laughed, even cried a little, because her fears were his fears, and the loss of such anxiety removed a burden that had been far to heavy for them to carry.
As the night grew older, their conversation eventually trickled to a few comments here and there. “I guess Jace is wondering if you’re ever coming back…”
Warren chuckled. “Yeah, that’s true. I think I’ll find him and head out anyway.”
Sarah’s brows waggled lecherously. Her smirk was even more telling. “Plans? I hope no one ends up being despoiled.” She chuckled.
“’Despoiled’? Who the hell uses words like that….No wait, don’t answer that. You and Jace are on a whole planet by yourselves where using vocabulary words that cost at least ten cents are one of your favorite pastimes.”
Sarah could make a comment. Instead, she laughed at Warren’s attempt at being affronted and pushed him in the direction of the house. He was more eager than ever to find Jace.
He passed through bodies and bodies of writhing people, guys and girls pressed tightly in what appeared to be a primal mating dance, full of grunting, groaning, and minimal clothing. In the middle of the throng was J.D. Sandwiched between two girls , the running back was taking advantage of his reinforced stardom.
He caught Warren’s eye, and smiled and yelled to him across the room. “Yo, come help me with these chicks.” J.D. grabbed both girls by their waists, and squeezed them against him. The girls giggled, and making cooing eyes and beckoning him over to the room.
Warren pointed his ears, pretending that he couldn’t hear the other man across the room, and he began to take large steps backwards as one of the girls detached herself from J.D.’s side and came Warren’s way.
He shook his head negatively and turned to walk away. Looking for Jace was fairly difficult, because of the constant stopping and starting he was forced to do, congratulations had to be given by teammates and so-called friends, and then girls wanted him thinking this was their prime opportunity to either snag the big man of campus or finally have the opportunity to find out if their attraction to him was mutual.
Warren high-fived the guys, while he feigned sweet excuses for not taking the girls up on their offers. Finally, he spotted Jace standing against the wall talking to an artsy looking red head. He knew by association that the girl worked on the yearbook staff with Jace.
He approached the pair, casually observing the open stance in their postures, the general comfort that came from knowing someone for years. Just like him and Sarah.
Jace spotted him approaching. Suddenly, his eyes seemed to light up, just a bit more the usual. When he finally reached them, his hand went out immediately. Jace gave him a curious look, writing off Warren’s change in behavior to his impatience.
“Warren, this is Tina.”
“Tina, this is Warren.” Recognition suddenly dawned on him.
“It’s great to finally meet you. I’ve seen you around, but never gotten a chance to say ‘hey’.” Warren said.
Tina gave Jace an encouraging look for which he blushed. “Well, you’ve been busy. State Championships don’t win themselves. That was a great game by the way.”
Seeing that the boys were having a hard time keeping their eyes off each other, Tina excused herself with a parting laugh. “I’m not going to take up anymore of your time. There’s a cheerleader track star that I need to go see.”
The meaning of her words penetrated his lust filled haze. “She means…”
Jace nodded. “Sarah. Cool, huh?” Warren had to agree.
“You ready to get out of here?” Warren asked.
Jace rewarded him with one of those brilliant smiles that constantly made him just a little bit breathless each time he was rewarded with one. Yeah, he thought about them as rewards, because any time Jace kissed him was a gift.
“Sure.”
